Toy Tonics welcome one of the US’ absolute legends in the game on their roster - Kai Alcé!  One of the original masters of jazzy house, Kai is a prime example of someone who witnessed the genesis of Detroit’s electronic musical landscape and strives to keep that spirit alive. Being of Haitian descent laid the foundation for his musical ear, starting with his childhood in Queens, New York. Some of his earliest musical influences included his mother’s penchant for soca music and the distinct Caribbean rhythms of his culture. An appreciation of Jazz would be further guided by his father’s expanding audiophile home system. During the 1970s the kindling of Hip Hop and the heyday of Disco perked the ear of a young Kai while they were living in NYC. The Big Apple would remain a constant throughout his musical journey as the years went on, but it was the move to Michigan that ultimately shaped his artistic vision.

On this 5 track EP Kai once again makes it all feel so easy! Deeply musical, yet also instantly effective on the dance floor, tracks like ‘New Life Livin’ and ‘Slide It In’ come with an ease that shows why he’s shaped the game for decades.

'Abisinia' featuring the Ethiopian singer Gigi comes with two extraordinary remix works by the Spaniards D-Formation & Grazze and the brit Ronnie Spiteri. D-Formation and Grazze, Meticulously built a colossal musical structure around the vocal, creating a peak-time melodic anthem, laden of modern sensibility, soaring your mind into a musical journey. Ronnie Spiteri crafted a darker and mesmerizing cut, intense techno elements, mental hooks, and his characteristic emphasis on the synths driving all this energy into an underground-spirited mixture. After releasing Louie Vega & The Martinez Brothers ‘Let It Go’ earlier this year, Defected now deliver a package of new mixes to continue the longevity of this irresistible summertime jam. The original record, a homage to NYC’s rich Latin American dance culture, was as slick, soulful and groove-filled as expected from two generations of the city’s finest, unsurprisingly catching the attention of house sensation Honey Dijon, who provides a remix on the package. A flawless example of her Berlin meets NYC style, Honey’s contribution has a clubbier feel, as short bursts of Marc E. Bassy’s vocal flicker over rippling synths and a driving bassline. This package also features the previously unreleased TMBLV Vox Dub, a new mix that blends elements of the original and the dub, maintaining the vocal to a more stripped-back effect, with the Latin-infused instrumentals and addictive bassline still in full play.

The ever shape shifting, critically hailed Hercules & Love Affair return with brand new album In Amber, to be released on 17th June 2022 via Skint/BMG.

“Across this record, there are emotional fields I hadn’t ventured into previously with Hercules & Love Affair,” says Butler. “Destruction, rage, loss, but also redemption and journeying towards empowerment are all touchstones on the album. It has taken years to make, but I am happy to put it forward now, at a moment in time where we have all been confronted with such heightened feelings collectively and on an unprecedented scale”.

Reuniting with ANOHNI for the first time since her stellar turn on the eponymous debut in 2008 (which undeniably produced one of the most beloved dance tunes of the oughts “Blind”) proved key to this process. Both share a love and deep respect for music of a more aggressive bent, zig zagging from grindcore like Godflesh and Bolt Thrower, via electronic avant-garde like Throbbing Gristle and Cabaret Voltaire to female fronted punk and metal like Sacrilege, Fear of God and Diamanda Galas.  On the other end of the spectrum, they have an equally intense appreciation for darker ethereal acts such as This Mortal Coil and Dead Can Dance. In Amber reflects this wide swathe of emotion and sound.
