Hercules & Love Affair’s new album ‘The Feast Of The Broken Heart’ (released 26th May / pre-order here georiot.co/3mv7) sees another musical reinvention from ringmaster Andy Butler - delivered by an impeccable new line up.

The ever-revolving collective led house music’s resurgence with club anthem ‘Blind’ in 2008 (Pitchfork’s record of the year), and 2014’s line up is another roll call of exceptionally talented vocalists. Brits nominee John Grant’s ability for translating hardship into elegance is writ large on ‘I Try To Talk To You’ and ‘Liberty’; Rouge Mary, whose deep, spiritual voice is hewn from a gospel education; Belgian singer Gustaph whose counter tenor takes lead on the single ‘Do You Feel The Same?’ and smoky voiced virtuoso Krystle Warren, who was introduced to Butler by Grant, and sings the provocative ‘My Offence’.

Andy Butler comments: “I wanted nasty basslines, stormy, bleary-eyed sounds, fiery, rough, tough and ragged old school house productions that sounded almost techno. I didn’t want polite, I wanted aggressive.”

This aesthetic coupled with tales of emotional triumph makes for something tough yet soulful. Meaningful house music that IS pop music and can speak to the most musically adroit of tastes.

Long-time friend of Defected and certified house legend Sandy Rivera flexes his club banger credentials in this soft but tough new track. Otherwise known as Kings Of Tomorrow, Sandy’s fruitful two-decade-long history with Defected is well known, and long may it continue when the relationship brings forth gems like this. ‘Try A Little Tenderness’ features Sandy’s obligatory commanding vocal hook, accompanied by a snarling, earth-shuddering bass. Surely one of the most defining house records ever made and an out-and-out classic, Soulsearcher’s ‘Can’t Get Enough!’ was first released on Soulfuric Deep, then licensed to Defected Records where it reached #8 in the UK charts. Returning to Soulfuric Deep with a package of five quality remixes, it’s clear that ‘Can’t Get Enough!’ is still resonating on dancefloors 20 years later. Flourishing duo Illyus & Barrientos present two remixes, the Last Boogie Mix introducing a piano riff and Club Refix going deep with a tougher club sensibility. Dr Packer maintains all the original’s most iconic elements, the euphoric vocals and timeless groove given a fresh-sounding elasticity. Finally, Angelo Ferreri presents two mixes, with the Vocal Remix already being a favourite with DJ’s long before its release. The Vocal Remix is an undoubtedly modern take on the classic, giving it more of a peak-time feel with bouncing production and a rolling groove. Angelo’s Sweety Remix loops alternative vocal moments with looser percussion for a more laidback approach. It’s not easy to do justice to an ultimate soulful, vocal house banger but these three remixers have achieved greatness, taking this beautiful record in some welcome new directions.

This package also features Sandy’s Original Mix and the bouncing 09 Remix. UK producer Mark Knight showcases his blossoming sound in his warped Toolroom Boys Mix with its wobbling bassline. Sandy teams up with Jay Sealée under their D-Menace alias for their bass-heavy remix. D-Dub Beats, Sand Beats and Take It Back Accapella mixes round off this exceptionally uplifting package.

When Mike Dunn released his Classic Music Company debut ‘My House From All Angles’ last year, the album was met with critical acclaim, The Guardian writing: “God may have made him funky, but Mike Dunn has kept it going ever since.” Now, two stand out cuts from the LP are given the remix treatment, enlisting some of the label’s closest cohorts to re-work these two irresistible hip-house jams. Up first, Peppermint Jam boss Mousse T. opens the release, weaving in his signature bouncy melodies and funk-flavoured grooves into ‘If I Can’t Get Down’. Up next, Classic label-mate and house expert Oliver Dollar brings in a raw, edgier sound on his Boomty Mix of ‘DJ Beat That Shhh’, with an aptly bumping bassline. The ever shape shifting, critically hailed Hercules & Love Affair return with brand new album In Amber, to be released on 17th June 2022 via Skint/BMG.

“Across this record, there are emotional fields I hadn’t ventured into previously with Hercules & Love Affair,” says Butler. “Destruction, rage, loss, but also redemption and journeying towards empowerment are all touchstones on the album. It has taken years to make, but I am happy to put it forward now, at a moment in time where we have all been confronted with such heightened feelings collectively and on an unprecedented scale”.

Reuniting with ANOHNI for the first time since her stellar turn on the eponymous debut in 2008 (which undeniably produced one of the most beloved dance tunes of the oughts “Blind”) proved key to this process. Both share a love and deep respect for music of a more aggressive bent, zig zagging from grindcore like Godflesh and Bolt Thrower, via electronic avant-garde like Throbbing Gristle and Cabaret Voltaire to female fronted punk and metal like Sacrilege, Fear of God and Diamanda Galas.  On the other end of the spectrum, they have an equally intense appreciation for darker ethereal acts such as This Mortal Coil and Dead Can Dance. In Amber reflects this wide swathe of emotion and sound.
