The Inevitable Movement

When’s the last time a band made something happen? Well, with pop-wise rock anthems catchy enough to get guitars back on the radio, and arena-sized epics that ponder every inch of the universe-while still being crafted like 3-minute singles themselves, Heroes of The Open End are the first band in years with a sound big enough to make some noise.

Lead singer Mike Baglivi spent years hunched over his bedroom four track and walking the dull landscape of suburban NJ until lyrics would come into his head too fast to write down. Eventually, he was writing songs that would explode in people’s ears: ATOM BOMBS….but he also knew that wasn’t enough.

R.E.L met Mike on what should’ve been just another weeknight in New York. A sonic painter of tones, colors, and frenetic shredding, R.E.L’s playing not only made him an original, but in a city with barely any musical identity left, except for an underground that didn’t play solos, it also made him NYC’s only guitar hero.

Then straight out of the factories and swamps of the Meadowlands came Nicky Ferrell. A basher with a strict musical education, he'd drown out the guitars - but every drum he hit always had a deep purpose. He was loud in a leather jacket, wore a bandanna, and liked to play with his shirt off. For the first time, Heroes felt like a real band.

The only true city boy of the group, “Baby Ghost” Will Brender was only deceptively quiet, bringing a booming, often pick-driven sound that became the muscle the band could finally lean on. And locking in the chamber with Nicky, he chose each note like a bullet, and knew exactly which beat to fire on.

So in a time when music has no landmarks, from a place that no one is watching, a band has come to do something for right now. And no matter how big the ideas get, their live show proves that each song begins firmly on the ground...and from there can go anywhere at all. A band with these kinds of possibilities can only mean one thing: Something is happening to music once again.

And yeah, they call themselves heroes.
