Dutch rapper J. Chris, debuting this month with Austrian producer srlsy, presents “Fanatic”. A dark, moody, Future track characterized by srsly’s fluttering synths and large bass is underscored by J. Chris’ steady vocals and individual style of rap. “Fanatic” makes us question the ground we stand on.

Evoking the earlier style of rap in the 90s, J. Chris’s flow is relentless but slower and complements the emotional landscape he creates with a percussive vibe. His rap recalls the days when rappers took time to get each word-- and therefore the message-- out. Combined with the side-chained kicks, “Fanatic" pulls us from one surprising direction to another.

Our tenth release on Villain Recordings is “Mandala" by the talented Imagin8 - a 20 year-old producer from Boston, Massachusetts.

From the man himself: "I see every track, every production as a story that I want to tell the listener.” We think we understand what “Mandala” is trying to tell us. Imagin8 has extensively used Eastern-sounding scales (both major and minor), massive percussion, and all types of resampling. Together with bells, bright synths, and stringed instruments: the effect is powerful and yet, very unsettling.

Imagin8 got his name from wanting to inspire emotion and imagination in his productions, and this is vividly shown through “Mandala”. The clearest image we get from listening to this piece is of an adventurer going to explore some ruins in South Asia, and having to survive obstacles along the way.

Belgian duo Sparkling Bits presents “Piratage”, an eerie yet oddly calm tune ripe with synth, strings, and percussion. This song takes us back to the 1700’s, setting the scene on a pirate ship that is floating stealthily on the sea. Calm arpeggios, flutes, and shuffled percussion give the song life and ambience. Whynnel’s expert manipulation of sub-bass and synths; combined with perfect side-chaining and crisp percussion hats and kicks, bring this tune to life from the depths of the sonic sea. Just as we become accustomed to following “Murvan”’s gritty squeaks and filtered piano chords down the twisting path Whynnel has created for us - it ends, and we realize we aren’t the same person as when we started.
