Alberta band Headwind has an awful lot to celebrate. The group got its start in Edmonton back in the late 1960s, and spent much of its first couple of decades on the road, touring North America just about non-stop throughout the 1970s and the early '80s.

The band played everything audiences wanted to hear: from Deep Purple to the Beach Boys, from Beatles to the Doobie Brothers, from the Who to Styx; and they'd constantly tailor their set to suit the region and the type of gig they were playing. As a result of this grueling workload, Headwind saw something like 200 musicians pass through its ranks -- before it went on a very lengthy hiatus in the 1980s.

In 2003, Headwind came back together in its current incarnation; the lineup consists of founding member Bo Sr. on keyboards, Bo Jr. on guitar, and Doug on drums. Rather than going on the road, the band instead decided instead to play at only one venue, that being their own club -- they've played a weekly gig at Edmonton's Jekyll & Hyde Pub (and now the J&H Pub) for the past decade.

The group was able to document many dozens of hours of live performance during that stint, and the best of those recordings (along with archival material from the band's earlier days) have gone into the band's new limited-edition release, The Headwind Bootleg Anthology -- featuring live concert recordings made between 1976 and 2012, along with vintage videos, photos, and a brand-new concert film entitled Headwind - Last Call. The film will be premiered at Edmonton's Metro Cinema on Sunday, November 17th at 4pm.

In anticipation of the big event, Headwind members Bo Sr., Bo Jr. and Doug came down to CKUA studios to talk with Lunch Box host Grant Stovel about the band's history and the exciting new release.

Lunch Box | Headwind

My conversation with harpsichordist Hank Knox. Knox will be acting as a featured performer and guest conductor of the upcoming Ariodante Project in Calgary performed by Chamber Muse and Early Music Voices. Ariodante is an opera seria in three acts composed by George Frideric Handel, which has come to be considered amongst Handel’s best loved operas.
