This book is a fantastic resource! It is exactly what I was looking for! I plan to use it during  summer vacation with my 6 and 9 year old. We are going to read one together each day and keep an art journal. It is short enough that my 2 year old shouldn't get too rowdy but also deep enough to spark conversation and get my kids into the bible!
I love how this book is organized! It is simple and engagimg- I've read 2/3 of it so far and am happy with every bit. I like her use of scripture and the fact that she gives a memory verse for each week!
My only complaint is the text is extremely small! I wish that it would be printed in a larger book and maybe be spiral bound.
I'm hoping after we get through the summer to have my 9 year old use it independently and it's hard to do all the fun prompts in such a small space in a book that closes on you.

Well written and well researched by the author. Brings the lives of these interesting women out of the shadow of their famous father.

New Churchill's biography sounds like another episode of the Simpsons - there are thousands of them. And yet this one is unique and worth reading. Why? Three reasons:
a] It's short and easy to read
b] It covers military issues superbly
c] It`s not excessively eulogistic
I think some American anglophiles and some fervent Churchillians may be disappointed with the book. They might feel that WSC has received an unfair treatment. But Churchill, a human, has become a myth, particularly in North America. John Keegan writes that he was just a man, a strange man full of contradictions. "A devoted husband and father, he was, by the account of his favorite and deeply loving daughter, Mary, in her 1979 biography of her mother, difficult at home and often impossible (page 186)."
Another contradiction of Churchill was one of a strategist. He had repeatedly stressed the importance of air power, more than any other civilian statesmen. Yet when it came to action, he could not resist the call of tradition and romance, and imagined that the Royal Navy could still assert the old supremacy unaided. The mistake of the Norwegian campaign was to be repeated in the Mediterranean, and still more disastrously in Singapore.
For me, myself being a Russian, Churchill is a paradox: he was both Russophobe and Russophile. He often referred to the Russians as "crocodiles". Keegan goes positive on Churchill's 1946 "Iron Curtain" speech. I disagree: WSC demanded a unified Anglo-American front against Russia which he described as a triumphalist and expansionist victor state. Russia ostensibly was about to overrun the Western Europe in March 1946. It was manifestly untrue: not only Stalin had no desire to spread communism outside his "sphere of influence", Russia had 20 million dead and was lying in ruins, its many European cities completely flattened, not unlike Hiroshima. In my view it was a sop to Truman and his band of hard-liners who had already decided on the policy of containment of Russia anyway. But it was Churchill who officially started the "Red Peril".
Yet when Germany suddenly attacked Russia on June 22, 1941 Churchill was the only statesman in the UK (or the US) who spoke about reaching out and supporting Russia. It contrasted drastically with his anti-communism and russophobia he had displayed only a few weeks before. Churchill said on June 22 1941: "I see the ten thousand villages of Russia, where the means of existence was wrung so hardly from the soil, but where there are still primordial human joys, where maidens laugh and children play. I see advancing upon all this in hideous onslaught the Nazi war machine, with its clanking, heel-clicking, dandified Prussian officers, its crafty expert agents fresh from the cowing and tying-down of a dozen countries. I see also the dull, drilled, docile, brutish masses of the Hun soldiery plodding on like a swarm of crawling locusts. I see the German bombers and fighters in the sky, still smarting from many a British whipping, delighted to find what they believe is an easier and a safer prey."
This passage demonstrates amply the most important thing about Churchill - he was a master of his language, a maestro of metaphor, and he used words as weapons of power. This brief but wonderful book gives us a good taste of that.

Churchill was one of the greatest world leaders in the 20th century. And one of the most unlikely.
He was what we would say a brat spoiled by privilege, horrible in school, but as a young man joined the military because he thought that would be the fastest way he could gain a position in Parliament.
Which it did.
He was fearless in battle. I would say even foolhardy, walking upright at the top of the British trenches during WWI to review his troops, despite being constantly shot at by the Germans.
He was one of only several men who, during the 1930s, believed that Hitler was secretly violating the Treaty of Versailles which provisioned that Germany must accept "all the loss and damage" it caused during WWI.
Churchill, in violation of his own Parliamentary laws, secretly met with a score of civil servants who gathered actual statistics on the secret build up of German war instruments. Throughout the 1930s he warned Parliament over and over again of the danger presented by Hitler's rise to power. He was completely ignored for years. But he held on, and when Hitler finally began his murderous conquest of Europe, at the last minute, Churchill was elected Prime Minister, and the rest, they say, is history.
Churchill was a prodigious student of history, compiling *A History of* *the English-Speaking Peoples*.
In it, he preserves the rousing speech of Queen Elizabeth to her troops during their war with the superior Spanish armada:
"Let tyrants fear.
I have always so behaved myself that, under God, I have placed my chiefest strength and safeguard in the loyal hearts andcgoodwill of my subjects; and therefore I am come amongst you, as you see, resolved, in the midst and heat of battle, to live or die amongst you, today down for my God, and for my kingdom, and for my people, my honour and my blood, even in the dust.
I know I have the body of a weak and feeble woman, but I have the heart and stomach of a king, and of a king of England too, and think foul scorn that Parma or Spain or any prince of Europe should dare to invade the borders of my realm; to which, rather than any dishonour shall grow by me, I myself will take up arms, I myself will be your general, judge and rewarder of every one of your virtues in the field."

Ricks' discussion of pro-Nazi sympathies (read, admiration) by some of the aristocracy in the UK in the 1930's is too engaging to be overlooked by anyone who tries to understand the future by studying the past, witness the lapse of judgment by Edward VII and Ambassador Joe Kennedy who later became popular international figures. Shameful.  I believe that some on the Left today would have been serious appeasers in the 1930s, as were forbearers who failed to see Stalin's flaws in the post-WWII era. This book is about two who embraced freedom while others didn't.
"Despite all their differences. their dominant priority, a commitment to human freedom, gave them common cause...Together in the mid-twentieth century these two men led the way, politically and intellectually, in responding to the twin totalitarian threats of fascism and communism."
Churchill came into office with a lot of baggage and some didn't think he would survive six month as prime minister, even with the Germans marching virtually unopposed across Europe. The UK sorely needed leadership, and the rise of Churchill unwarranted, given his background.. Some today are making the same prediction about Trump-- that impeachment is around the corner-- but we will have to wait to see if the comparison ends there.
Ricks' ability to compare and contrast Churchill with Orwell is truly the product of a remarkable intellect. Agree or not, at some point in the future an author equally talented may bond and pit Trump with Bernie Sanders. The similarities and differences are glaring..
It's a great read and I found my eyes mistry more than once. Orwell died young and suffered greatly, but Ricks points out Animal Farm and 1948 are still very popular, while Churchill's works are rarely read.
