I imagine this track going with a somewhat depressing modern drama set in the rural USA. Okay when the guitar comes in maybe it's modern circa 2005, but there is definitely an irascible sheriff character who still manages to solve the mystery by the end of each season. 

The plucked and low tremolo sound are from the Cello Banjo Plus instrument, and I also use strings from Spitfire BBCSO Core, Albion One, Abbey Road One, the viola from Orchestral Tools Tableau Solo Strings and Strand Acoustic Guitar, Akkord guitar and a bass guitar from the Kontakt Factory Library, some real guitar, and the drums are from Pianobook - Jon Meyer's supremely useful soft drums: https://www.pianobook.co.uk/library/soft-drums/ (Kontakt or SFZ)

Modern Western Cue (Pianobook Cello Banjo Plus demo)

A car drives down an American suburban road and this track swells as the main character (a 16 year old played by a 25 year old) narrates, just to make sure the audience knows that a Lesson Was Learned™

This track features Cinematic Acoustics by Ruben Camacho, available for free on Pianobook (Kontakt Format). I also used Spitfire LABS Peel Guitar, Percussion, Bass and Drums, Spitfire BBCSO, Impact Soundworks Shreddage 2, sampes of Linndrum Snare and 808 Kick, plus some real electric guitar.

All the sound design elements are from Bottle Clacks. The orchestra is Spitfire BBCSO Core, Albion One and Abbey Road One, the piano is Max's Bentley from Pianobook, and those brass flutter tonguing effects are played by the Anyafil from Eduardo Tarilonte's Era: Medieval Legends, here standing in for Goldsmith's use of the Serpent in the soundtrack to Alien.

This week's demo for Pianobook shows off Straight Maths by Martin Russ, a fun synth library in the free Decent Sampler format. I feel like this track would go well with an iPhone game that's just a little too bright and colourful.

Under Cloud and Under Star (Pianobook Shakuhachi Demo)

This arrangement features three tracks, "17", "02" and "Snow_B" from Eric Heberling's  soundtrack to Bethesda Software's Daggerfall from 1996. 

Daggerfall was the second game in the Elder Scrolls series and was followed by Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim. I used to love wandering around in this game when I was younger, even though I was usually too scared to go into the dungeons or fight anyone. I had great fun listening to the music, talking to people and browsing in shops until they closed when I would rush to spend a night at the inn. You didn't want to be out at night on the streets of Daggerfall City!

In creating this medley of three tracks from the game I built on Heberling's original midi files, finding the right samples to use and thickening the orchestration here and there. It must have been a huge challenge to write for games in the time when you didn't know what sound card would be reproducing the music.

Daggerfall Soundtrack Orchestrated! - "17", "02" & "Snow_B"

In this medley from the 1996 game Daggerfall, we take a trip through the snowy streets of the city of Daggerfall ("Oversnow"), visit the mages guild ("Mage") and travel across the High Rock province as the sun rises ("Sunny"). 

Daggerfall was the second game in the Elder Scrolls series and was followed by Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim. The soundtrack was composed by Eric Heberling. In creating this medley of three tracks from the game I built on the midi files from the game, finding the right samples to use, thickening the orchestral texture and creating variation when the music repeats. Interestingly, Daggerfall reuses much of the music from The Elder Scrolls: Arena, which is where "Oversnow" and "Sunny" first appear. Creating this medley was far more complex than the last one but has been incredibly rewarding. 

In the repeat of "Oversnow", I had the idea of adding a solo vocal line. I didn't want the lyrics to be in English, or something as recognisable as Latin and I was considering making up something that sounded vaguely like a fantasy language before I had the idea to try and write some lyrics in Old English. With the help of the Bosworth-Toller Anglo-Saxon Dictionary (http://www.bosworthtoller.com/), the Old English to Modern English translator (http://www.oldenglishtranslator.co.uk/), Peter S. Baker's pronunciation guide (http://www.wmich.edu/medieval/resources/IOE/pronunciation.html) and a complete disregard for Anglo-Saxon grammar, I came up with this:

"Fréorig oferwintre.  
Grimm weg, carsíþ, sunnwlitig"

Which roughly means:
"Freezing cold/sad and mournful, to go through winter
A grim journey, a sorrowful fate, beautiful with the sun"

It probably wouldn't actually make much sense to someone from the 10th century but it sounds cool!

In the central section of "Sunny", listen out for the not so subtle tribute to the orchestration in the "Finlandia Hymn" section of Jean Sibelius' Tone Poem "Finlandia".
