Hazy Pit

Your Periphery Is My Center is a show on @refugeworldwide curated by Oramics to support regionally underrepresented artists by amplifying the voices from the Central/Eastern European electronic music scene and examining inequality within the industry. Each broadcast presents a selection of music from a different country in the region.

This time @matwe & @nina-pixel talk about the Slovak (not just) electronic & experimental scene - what has shaped it, which artists are worth watching & what's hidden from plain sight.

The show premiered on Refuge Worldwide in Berlin on the 7th of September 2023.

 🗣️ Matwe, also known as Mawt, is a clubbing curator of Nová Cvernovka, art centre & community in Bratislava; co-founder of Nočná, a party focused on dancefloor activism & intense audiovisual experiences; co-founder of SPFM, a booking agency representing underground electronic artists; former co-curator of experimental & techno club at Pohoda Festival; Ph.D. candidate in digital culture & creative industries, and a DJ formed by world's festivals and various events that he loves to haunt during the year.

🗣️ Nina Pixel is a conceptual sound artist, using field and voice recordings, tapping and cracking rhythms in never-ending journeys, pre-apocalyptic fairy tales, and emotional topography of unique landscapes, like the archeologist of the human soul. Her music is a journey into the noisy rites and industrial myths strongly inspired by nature.

Nina is recently working on reimagining Slovak folklore by redefining cultural narratives via a project called ANCESTRAL ARCHEOLOGY. She performed in national galleries in Amsterdam or Prague, and Berlin clubs like ://about blank, Suicide Circus, and Tresor or industrial spaces, silos, and old factories. She is currently based in Berlin and performs under the name Nina Pixel or BLACK ACID.

NEW MAGIC MEDIA is a moniker of DJ, artist, and writer based in Prague. NMM started like a VJ but shortly converted behind the decks. S/he wrote about music for media such as @advojka.cz, @a2larm.cz, or @croradiowave. S/he is a resident and community member of Prague's @radio_punctum with their bi-monthly show called Wenom. In their sets NMM reflects more on their free-party and noise/punk roots and invites more unsettling, ravey, and techno sound. Their selections circulate between all imaginable soundscapes and there is often a lot of space for obscurities and surprising twists. But the context is everything and the mosaic always makes sense in a bigger picture. But basically, the main factor is their current mood and current musical obsessions.

My debut techno EP that is inspired by organic features. Big thanks to @djkrabs and @count2count for fresh remixes !

VERDANT (count remix)

New mix, this time by the DJ and radio host Bernardo Matos (@bernardo_luis_de_matos). Bernardo is one of the faces of the new generation in Portuguese club music, and their shows on Radio Universidade de Coimbra (https://ruc.pt/autor/bernardomatos) called our attention, so we decided to invite them in for this high energy mix!

They’ve created shows such as Pecado Sonoro (https://www.instagram.com/pecadosonoro/), Doomification, Mooda-te and Cyberia (https://www.instagram.com/cyberiaruc/), they were part of the Radio's administration in 2018/2019 and 2022/2023, were responsible for training the voiceover course and conducting it from 2018 to 2021 and were in charge of directing RUC programming in 2020/2021. Since 2022 they have been one of the people responsible for curating and planning the RUC Stage (https://www.instagram.com/palcoruc/) at Queima das Fitas in Coimbra.

They passionately believe in a constant cultural effervescence and as such have been developing and promoting events in the structures they are part of, such as the collective Instrumental Violence (https://www.mixcloud.com/instrumentalviolence/), Associação Cultural Apura (https://www.instagram.com/ac.apura/) and Associação Cultural Ciga239 (@ciga239). It was within all these contexts that their interest in the most varied fields of electronic music arose, always assuming and defending experimentation as the main driving force of their musical adventures.
