Ancient Rome.

With this song, I am trying to create an image of an ancient multicultural civilization, that stretched from North Africa, through the Mediterranean, all the way to what would later be Northern England. It is also related to the origin of Christmas. On 25th December 274 AD, Emperor Aurelian made Sol Invictus ("invincible sun") the official "sun god" and state religion of the later Roman Empire and Roman Legion as a means of symbolizing Rome's Imperial strength.

In the early fourth century, on October 27th 312 AD, Emperor Constantine I would come to abandon Sol Invictus after claiming to witness a "crucifix" in the sky on the eve of the Battle of the Milvian Bridge. According to legend, during a dream, Christ spoke to Constantine, claiming "in hoc signo vinces" or "in this sign you will conquer your enemies". As a result, Constantine relaxed on this persecuted "Jewish sect" and became a Christian. This act changed Rome, and the world, forever. Under his later successor Theodosius I, Christianity would eventually become the official state religion of the late Roman Empire and the Roman Catholic Church would be established.
The collapse of the Western Roman Empire to Germanic invaders would eventually reach its climax by 476 AD. But the Empire would continue as a religious and political institution. The power merely shifted from "caesars" and "senators" to "papacy" and "bishops".

Was the vision real? Or did Constantine merely see the potential for a political institution, one that would dominate Europe during the middle-ages until the time of Henry VIII of England in the 16th century?
