2022EMM DJ Lil'dave

London-based Irish producer Bruk Rogers aka Cian McCann (Zero T/Zero Tolerance/Searchlight) signs to Brighton-stable Tru Thoughts and shares new single “LDN 313”, a sonic clash between the cities of London (LDN) and Detroit (area code 313). 

“LDN 313” combines London beats and basslines centred in the genres of bruk/broken beat and grime –  layered with Detroit techno stabs and pads, influenced by the soundscapes of the iconic Mad Mike (Underground Resistance). “There's an obvious nod to Marc Mac's Nu Era productions in the synth parts also” Bruk Rogers added. 

The Bruk Rogers alias was born out of Cian’s long-held love of the broken beat genre, and its recent resurgence spearheaded by labels such as Tru Thoughts, Rhythm Section International, Selectors Assemble and Eglo Records. Aesthetically and eponymously influenced by watching endless reruns of the 70s sci-fi adventure series Buck Rogers, the mischievous alias was coined with the help of a friend. “My older brothers wanted to call me Twiki – so it’s all a bit of good fun and kitsch nostalgia!” Cian says.

Rewinding 20+ years from now; Cian (as Zero Tolerance) had his first jungle tracks signed to 4hero’s Reinforced Records and was exposed to the heart of the burgeoning broken beat scene just by hanging out at their Dollis Hill studio. He was also highly influenced by going to CoOp at Plastic People and frequenting Jazz:Refreshed at MauMau Bar.
 
Back to the recent present: Cian was booked to play a DJ set at the ‘virtual’ We Out Here Festival in 2021 and decided to play a bruk set. He had so much fun that he decided to start making some bruk beats straight afterward. Debut releases on Afronaut & Mark Force’s CoOperation label have been very well received, with wide-ranging support from BBC 6Music, Gilles Peterson, Jazz FM, Spotify Japan and many more. He has also done some remix work for Kid Fonque’s Stay True, CoOperation and Tru Thoughts.

Cian is also a member of the jazz-soul duo Searchlight alongside fellow Irish producer Dominic Purcell (Beat 2), Their self-titled debut album featuring the likes of Children of Zeus collaborator [ K S R ] recently dropped on legendary Goldie’s Fallen Tree 1hundred label and has seen heavy support from tastemakers Mary Anne Hobbs, Gilles Peterson and Benji B, as well as being named Huey Morgan’s (BBC 6Music) Record of the Week. 

Joining Tru Thoughts in 2022, Cian’s first introduction on the label was via a DnB remix for soul sister duo MELONYX’s “Energy”, under his Zero T moniker. Bruk Rogers enters a new intergalactic chapter partnering with Tru Thoughts, a label renowned for championing futuristic broken beat talent (WheelUP, Lanu, Jonny Faith, Afronaut – to name a few). Expect a lot more beats from the 25th century for the foreseeable future, from this sonic astronaut and adventure hero.

Exclusive Premiere: Bruk Rogers "LDN 313" (Forthcoming on Tru Thoughts)

Today we premiere the hypnotic minimalist brass sounds of "Witold" by kIRk, from their forthcoming album, 'K'.

On ‘K’, Olgierd Dokalski and Paweł Bartnik linked up with Stanisław Matys playing duduk. Matys and Dokalski form the wind & brass section, which is the identity core of the "new" kIRk. Two separate elements, the duduk and the trumpet, play simple themes, sunk in timelessness. Bartnik catches these themes on air and subtly processes them, loops and spreads them in space.

6 lingering duduk (an Armenian woodwind instrument) and trumpet led pieces that oscillate between ambient and ceremonial, almost calling to mind The Last Post at times, and infused with a particular Polish melancholy. Paweł Bartnik catches these themes on air and subtly processes them, loops and spreads them in space. Their new album 'K.' will be released on 3rd December on Requiem Records.

Bongomann returns to Darker Than Wax with his third solo offering – the deep, dreamy, and cosmic sound of Lounge Zero. Since releasing his debut EP Smiles with the label in 2020, the artist has since released tracks with labels such as FuFu and Fauve Records, as well as dropping Wake Up/Kick On – an hour long live recording cut to cassette with Botanic Records. One to watch in the Singapore scene and a close friend of the label, Bongomann has begun a deep dive into the realm of live performance in recent years, which has heavily informed the development of his distinctive style.

At its core, Lounge Zero is a heartfelt ode to the chillout sesh, incorporating elements of ambient and downtempo to create a cohesive sonic palette and a finely curated listening journey. ‘Enter’ kicks things off with a cerebral and restrained hardware jam, patiently taking its time to explore all aspects of its aural landscape. Standout cuts ‘Settle’ and ‘Float’ welcome the listener firmly into the lounge, setting the vibe with percussive, atmospheric soundscapes. ‘Pause’ drives forward with a heady, almost trip-hop infused house beat, while ‘Rise (Ambient Mix)’ provides a reflective, beatless interlude. Breaking the mould of the EP’s downtempo theme, ‘Zoof’ closes out the release with ravey, psychedelic-infused euphoria.

An introduction to Digital DJing using Ableton Live. We use the Session View as our DJ interface, triggering and processing tracks on the fly. But first we learn how to set up a DJ template, what kind of effects to use, details about Warping and Midi controlling. We also cover some DJ fundamentals like tempo and BPM, cueing, beat matching, track selection, dance music structure, fading etc. At the end of the workshop, you  record a DJ mix. Its been a minute!! 

Episode #3 of House x House x House Podcast is here!  This show was recorded in June, a few days into the global “Black Lives Matter” protests related to the murder of George Floyd - an African American who’s brutal murder by a white police officer was broadcasted online. 

Against this backdrop of social unrest and Covid19 quarantine, I interviewed Vienna-based multi-disciplinary artist and vocalist Helena Eribenne (https://earthzoneproductions.com) and French producer A Jackin Phreak (Arnaud). The two bonded as music friends over the internet. Arnaud was a fan of Helena’s via her involvement with S’Xpress - one of UK’s first house music chart topping acts, that debuted in 1989. 

In this interview, Helena fills us in on her experience as a clubber and artist in the early days of house music in London, while Arnaud lets us in on his obsession with acid house. And of course, due to the unique moment, we all share perspectives on ongoing discourse around systemic racism and colonialism.

Helena and Arnaud have collaborated and recently released a beautiful acid house single “Tidalwave” out now on Bandcamp (https://ajackinphreak.bandcamp.com/releases) and online stores with remixes by Stefan Braatz, Low Profiler, and Skat. 

Our DJ guest is Lagos-based Evamic Nzei (https://instagram.com/evamicnzei), a resident DJ at House x House x House. He’s also a producer and currently a resident DJ at Hot FM Lagos. His mixtape is a classic “deep house” mix dedicated to house’s Black American roots: featuring first and second wave producers from Chicago and Detroit including Mr. Fingers, Larry Heard, Virgo 4, Patrice Scott and others.
