What a year it’s been for Loadstar. Exceeding every possible expectation with their debut album ‘Future Perfect’ in May 2013, the duo won critical props and appreciation from every possible corner: from The Guardian to Mixmag, Hype to High Contrast, MTV to Radio 1… Love for Loadstar has been overwhelming. 

Naturally the love goes both ways. Here the Bristol duo provide an early Christmas reboot bundle, bringing 2013 to a fittingly heavy climax. Six remixes in total (two digital exclusives from a heavily subscribed RAM remix competition) the package features D&B reversion’s from some of the label’s most talented artists. 

First up is a remix from Loadstar themselves. Flipping the switch on their electro-bass burn-up ‘Losing You’, they ante up with pummelling drum dynamics and a bassline that screams bona fide murderation. True subversive heavyweightism. 

Up next, ‘Need You’. It began as a turbo-charged techno monster. Now, under the careful spell of Frankee, it’s a rush-coated, star-gazing roller built on a solid bed of bass textures. Twinkling and terrorising in equal measure, Frankee once again shows why he’s been rated as one of drum & bass’s brightest prospects. 

Those hungry for jugular-focused damage should jump on DC Breaks’ take on ‘Give It To Me’. Riddled with insane levels of energy and attitude, this is strictly peaktime business right here, confirming the duo’s current do-no-wrong status. 

Rene LaVice is also on chop-slapping form with his incendiary rub. Processing the demonic dubsteppy intentions of the original into a rocket-powered stepper, it has the sound (and impact) of someone setting fire to entire firework factory and running off at full speed. Genuine audio damage. 

Finally we have two digital exclusives. Swotting off the competition from hundreds of fellow hopefuls, both Ality and Abstr4ct are more than well-deserved winners. Ality adds oceanic sheet metal textures to the bass that’s neatly countered by tight weaves of dreamy synths while Abstr4ct takes the original’s distinctive paranoid riff and galvanises it with an iced out, steppy riddim and an array of system-blowing glitches. It’s so heavy Andy C included it on his recent ‘Nightlife 6’ mix. 

Six remixes, six reminders of Loadstar’s raw power. The perfect way to end a future perfect year…

2014 looks set to continue the onslaught. And it starts right here with 'Lock In / Shakedown', a dynamite double header designed purely for total dancefloor obliteration. Get to know:

'Lock In' kicks off with serious intent: a sharp, clipped riff and trembling, emotive pads set the dramatic scene before we're hurled into a thick bass fray. The low end roars and stretches as DC Breaks trademark drum science surges through the mix. And with additional breakbeats peppering the fills with chop-slapping cymbal splashes and chest-pressing double-kicks, an intense dynamic is maintained throughout. Handle with care... This one's dangerous.

'Shakedown' upholds the Bristol/London duo's menacing message as we're instantly sucker-punched with nagging middy notes, subtle bass tears and a pensive build-up. Before we know it, we're surrounded in a swarm of basses, each one soaring and sneering, buzzing and biting, vying for our full focus. As a cool tape-stop effect to introduce us to the breakdown, the rebuild and second drop live up to the track title in every way: this is guaranteed to shake your dancefloor so hard it's pretty much criminal.

2014 stands as a defining moment for the RAM Records imprint. Not only did it announce the pivotal signing of artists like Audio, Teddy Killerz and Bensley but they also oversaw the birth of compilation series RAMLife hosted by Loadstar. Even in its first form, it contained nearly every essential release the last twelve months had to offer. 

But this year, RAMLife is taking you into deeper and murkier dimensions. Having already flexed his production muscle on the ricocheting, four-track ‘Nil by Mouth’ EP, as well as his first visual debut in the music video for ‘Heads Up’, it’s now time for Audio to cut open and expose his musical psyche. 

Including some of the most aggressive, technically adept and prominent artists the genre has to offer, including Bad Company, Optiv & BTK and Noisia to name a few, no stone goes unturned for the album’s entirety. Audio brings his live personality into the whole album and accompanying mix; one that doesn’t let you pause for breath. Lighters at the ready… Things are about to get emotional. 

Loadstar have delivered the next single from their forthcoming album ‘Future Perfect’ and it’s an absolute stone-cold vocal stunner. Fronted by the emphatic, emotion-rich vocals of Takura Tendayi, powered by pummelling live drum energy, guided by a relentless, chugging riff and polished by crisp piano twinkles, ‘Refuse To Love’ is, without argument, one of the biggest productions Loadstar have composed to date. 

Takura is no stranger to the spotlight; his previous collaborations include Chase & Status, Plan B, Kano, Jack Beats and Example. ‘Refuse To Love’ is one of his most poignant appearances to date; stirring up memories of scorned love, his heartfelt delivery is the perfect tonic to the turbo-powered hook beneath. Set to cause commotion on every stage; from stadiums to underground dancehalls, airwaves to headphones, it’s the perfect unity of sterling song writing and rugged, behemoth studio mastery.

Remix-wise Ram Records have handpicked two of the most exciting names to have emerged in bass music recently. Bristol bass gunmen My Nu Leng step up with a rendition that tips a timeless nod at electronic music’s rich heritage. Jacking with a classic house feel but groaning with raw contemporary bass techniques it’s the perfect balance of vibes that will find home across myriad genre playlists. 

Bobby Tank follows, and instantly takes the tempo down further to a slow n’ sleazy 110bpm. Fusing the best elements of trap and glitch, it’s a diced and spliced version that pays full respect to the emotions of the original while subverting them with the utmost funk and creativity. 

Finally we hit ‘Flight’. A deeper escapade into the duo’s deeper side, it’s Loadstar at their most subtle and understated. Complete with a swooning bassline that ebbs and flows delicately against trippy reversed loops and fluttering elements, the full focus is on the simple-but-deadly groove. A quintessential roller that builds so gradually you won’t even notice, it’s the ideal tonic for the emotional power-punch of ‘Refuse To Love’

2013 is shaping up to be a fine vintage for DC Breaks. Having ignited the year with their cutlass-sharp ‘Shaman/Let It Go’ double A, the duo return to push us face-first into the summer with two more full-frontal underground bass workouts. 

‘Swag’ leads. The audio equivalent of the filthiest, naughtiest swearword you could possibly mutter, it’s an undiluted body-shock banger. Armed with a tearing bassline that refuses to sit still and discuss matters in a calm or sensitive manner, it’s a passionately vitriolic voyage into the darkest corners of drum & bass. Yet another astonishing success for the Bristol/London duo; few production outfits can deliver something with such brutal body and terrorising texture while maintaining clarity and dynamics like this. 

Recovered yet? Now jump on ‘Proton’ for another lesson in raw audio assaults. Living up to its positively charged title, the duo add a dash of euphoria to their strong-armed blend for yet another timeless example of D&B’s powerful potency. Bolstered by bullet-proof bass; powered by pinch-punch drum work and sizzled by stark, sweeping stabs, ‘Proton’ rolls and rampages with pristine party-primed mischief.
