A Perpetual Host is Francisco Meirino’s fourth full-length, solo studio album on Misanthropic Agenda.
A deep dive into personal loss and the banalities of life and art, A Perpetual Host captures the raw, solitary, and often acerbic extremes that drive creation. Across four pieces, Meirino explores sonic tension and boredom, questioning the simplicity and complexity of the mundane with bursts of clarity that redefine existence itself.

Francisco Meirino is a Spanish sound artist based in Switzerland.

His music explores the tension between programmable material and the potential for its failure. His interest lies primarily in what is not supposed to be recorded : the end of life of electronic devices, electrostatic noise, magnetic fields and the unconventional use of music hardware and sound systems and how to exploit these sonic failures in radically different ways in his sound pieces.

His music combines intricate textures, sonic precision, wide spatial panning and is fascinating by its physical intensity and detail precision.

He mostly uses the modular synthesizer (Eurorack-Serge), various microphones, the computer, the field recorder, tape recorders and tape echoes, EMF detectors and various home-made electro-acoustic devices.

For Bajo Tierra, the artist was inspired by the muted bubbling of swamps. Thus, at the start of each piece, the listener is led to observe the apparent, superficial calm of a multi-headed sound complex.

»grain« is the third Innode release following on from »Gridshifter« in 2013 and »syn« in 2021.

A new methodology to make the album is applied yet again from the trio of Bernhard Breuer, Steven Hess and Stefan Németh. The approach is more an anti approach where the trio let the process of creation itself steer the development of the recording, without any prior conceptual agenda.

Irregular rhythmic patterns often served as the initial springboard for each piece with Breuer creating a loop either by playing drums or with the aid of a modelling percussion synthesizer. The results often bypass existing formulaic grids. The outfit embraced these anti-precision steps building shapes around the tarnished templates.

The process of building upon the core structures laid forth alters throughout. In the case of »Splitter« you can hear an example of Bernhard´s core loops dominating a skeletal audio sphere. The title of the track »Impactopium« reflects the process of its construction being a conglomeration of individual titles meshed into a whole. The audio is a non-linear compendium of several fragments of individual elements. A conscious method of exploring a more decentralised architecture saw three disparate elements layered randomly on top of each other with some synths added as a sonic seasoning at the later stages.

Elsewhere sonic elements are restructured in unusual ways. One member's contribution is completely stripped away, quiet sounds captured with contact mics are highly amplified, the last track introduces twisted themes of the first track.

The title »grain« refers to the roughness resulting from these explorations. It also takes note of the term grain as used in analogue photography or in the case of audio as a distorted signal, or »noise.« All of these elements, normally eschewed, are here embraced as a thematic thread to instigate the exploratory proceedings.

This is a playbox of inventiveness, a hall of mirrors and an endless search for unusual tactics and fresh results.

Tackling the initial loop tracks from a wide variety of strategic approaches Innode has concocted a strangely cohesive work. From sparse source material to heavy overdubs of overdubs »grain« is a uplifting collection of works from this relentlessly curious and exploratory Austrian outfit. Humans make the work but the random embracing of unexpected processes means the gentleman of the outfit is not fully ruling what becomes of these works.

'Guide de la vie associative' is a piece for solo cello I composed for my longtime collaborator, cellist Okkyung Lee, in 2013, with live amplification aimed at highlighting and working with the resonant characteristics of the performance site. 'Guide' takes off from the close relationship Lee and I have established in over a decade of collaboration. As improvisers, we both have ways of thinking through motivic repetition, through listening for small changes and for resonances and other acoustic features of sites. I wrote this piece quickly in 2013 when another work I had planned to present in a festival in Brussels was held up in customs. I drew inspiration from the concert site itself, a large social-services bureau in Brussels’ Anderlecht section that housed dozens of helpful agencies devoted to aspects of daily life. The score is a translation from each entry in the bureau’s pamphlet, into a set of numbers, which I use to regulate series of repetitions, de-tunings and difficult to perform technical operations. It offers Lee and myself an intricate framework within which to explore Lee’s palette of extended techniques on the cello, and my interest in creating a conversation between the architecture of the building and the music. My role in performance is to sit nearby at the mixing desk and spatialize the mic signal live to a carefully prepared PA system. The length of 'Guide de la vie associative' is approximately 40 to 45 minutes. 'Guide' was premiered in 2013 as part of the festival “Tuned City Brussels,” and has been performed by Lee several times since, including in Borderline Festival, Athens, in 2014 and at Project Qubit in New York in 2018, where this recording was made.
