Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth's classic LP 'Mecca and the Soul Brother' turned 30 recently, so reminisce for a spell with a mix of OG Samples, Remixes, & Blends.
The way Pete sampled old jazz/funk/soul records and layered them over hard, dusty drums was masterful (how he caught that little part on the fadeout of an Ohio Players record for 'Lots Of Lovin' still amazes me).    
Combine that with C.L.'s sharp yet fluid lyricism (how many MC's could rhyme like THIS back in '92??), and you unquestionably have one of the pillars of early 90's NYC boom bap.

One of my favorite MC's of all time is Mos Def. The man was so damn fluid on the mic and actually cared about the things he talked about. A true poet. Growing up, it was very important for me to see people who were actually intelligent while still retaining that cool factor. I think many times in the black community, you equate a person being extremely well-read as either snobby and elitist or a straight sell-out with no self-awareness. Mos was able to shatter those misconceptions beautifully. The man is an award-winning actor, true mc, poet, and producer. And he does all of them with skill and a nobility. The Wicked Takeover on WRAPfm Ep036 Large Professor 90's Productions Tribute (08-19-2022)

November 9, 1993 will forever go down as one of the greatest days in hip hop history.  Two of the genre’s most revered albums dropped on the same day:  Wu-Tang Clan’s debut ‘Enter The 36 Chambers’, &  A Tribe Called Quest’s third LP ‘Midnight Marauders’.  I remember riding my bike to the mall, with money I had earned from my after-school job.  I had anticipated this day for awhile, and saved up in advance to pick up both albums (at that age $40 felt like $500).  For the months that followed, both albums fought for playing time on my boombox.  One moment, I was transported to the boulevard of Linden, and the next to the rugged streets of Shaolin.  Those albums stayed in my rotation forever (literally).
To mark the 25th anniversary of both LP’s, I thought it might be a good idea to try and take the vocals from Wu-Tang’s album, and blend them over the instrumentals from Midnight Marauders.  I wasn’t sure it would work at first, but as is usually the case, inspiration hit at midnight when I was trying to sleep (the coincidence of the timing is not lost on me).  A couple of hours later, I managed to pair up every single Wu-Tang vocal with a suitable beat from MM.  The intent was not to improve on the originals in any way….that would be impossible, as I consider them both to be perfect bodies of work.  Rather, it was about orchestrating a fun concept, and putting a totally new spin on these well-worn classics.  The contrast of Wu’s gritty street raps over Tribe’s jazzy production works in an unexpected way.  Now, I present to you my personal tribute to these legendary groups:   A Clan Called Wu - “Enter The Marauders”.

I am constantly thinking of different themes to build a mix around. With the completion of each mix I typically fall into a 2-3 week funk where I try to think of a new theme for my next mix. Following the Folger's Blends mix I was struggling to think of a new theme. Then, one day while doing a random google search I stumbled onto the above logo. At first glance, I thought the logo was straight dope. However, the logo became even cooler when I learned that it was the creation of my favorite t-shirt designer, Derek from Manifest Worldwide. Given that the saying behind the logo comes from a ATCQ song, I was originally intending to do a Tribe mix. However, since Tribe mixes are a dime a dozen I went in the direction of creating a mix that attempts to capture the jazzy vibe that groups like Tribe and Digable Planets spawned. As the title suggests, all songs on this mix incorporate jazz based samples. The track selection includes music from jazzy groups and producers such as A Tribe Called Quest, Digable Planets, Diamond D, Black Moon, De La Soul, Madlib, No ID, Gang Starr, Showbiz & AG, Big L, The Roots, and Nas (I think that's all of them?). Half the fun of making this mix was doing the research to ensure that all songs maintained a jazz break. Some were no brainers, but other songs with jazz breaks were quite surprising. Jazz based samples have always given a special vibe to hip hop music so I hope this mix captures that magic. Thanks again to Derek at Manifest for inspiring the mix's theme.
