sorry i didn't do the rounds listening and commenting last week. been in pain all week with dry socket following a tooth extraction. if any of you know what that's like... you get it. thought this track has a kind of "electric" feel to it. so there you go, double meaning.

new record for me, getting this one submitted with 13 seconds to go ;) i was picking at it til the last few minutes.

march has been a terrible month with some of the biggest trials i have faced in many years, following february which was a long "journey" of intense nerve pain following dental surgery, and the effects of being on loads of antibiotics and painkillers. january was neutral but so far i'd say 2024 has been a terrible year and right now everything is hovering in uncertainty - and one possible outcome is that things are about to get much worse. i, like many others around this time, had considered giving up on weekly beats. i'm sad to see a few of my favourite artists appear to have dropped out. glancing at the numbers i see we've just surpassed a drop of 100 users compared to week 1. but i decided at the beginning of the year that i would commit to this. it's nice to have the option of submitting absolute f*cking garbage tracks rather than giving up :) creative freedom is a beautiful thing.

i've learned from doing other long-term daily or weekly projects in the past that the low spots are merely part of the process, and in the end it pays off to keep going when you want to give up. so if you're feeling low, discouraged, uninspired - make something bad. it feels good.

had to scramble a bit to finish something for this week. all week i've been working on various things but nothing has substantially come together, and by sunday i still didn't know what i'd actually submit. so here's a little interlude sort of track i guess. nothing special. i had considered sticking with the noise theme that kinda developed this month, but this past week things in my life have taken a turn for the better and i wanted to do something a little more cheery to honour that. this is kinda funky at least and a little mysterious.

very happy to say i'm spending the month away from home on a much needed vacation after all the shit i've been through this past two months, so i will be coming up with different ways of making weaklybeets in april. been too busy settling in so this is just an iphone recording from earlier this week before i left, just a bit of improvisation back home in my practice room, with minimal editing, mostly to remove low background hum from the room... this is just to keep things going, a step above skipping a week (or quitting), and i thought it might be cool to submit something a little different.

outside of my comfort zone this week, using a different program than usual as i'm still away from home. a much more raw sound than i would normally have. need to get more familiar with this program. satisfied enough with this to submit it. might go back to iphone recordings next week lol.

"sub letting"

i brought my seldom-used melodica along on my trip thinking that it might come in handy, living without a keyboard for a month (besides the small and rather flimsy midi controller i also brought) and as an option for "creative" weeklybeats-making in the absence of my home setup. so here it is.

the place i've been living for this past month is on the corner of a busy street, in a rainy city. it's an old house and the outside noise can be heard clearly from inside. i wanted to capture this place. so i set my phone near the door to record the sounds of traffic on the wet street, and paced around the room improvising on the melodica. a few days later when i sat down to work with the audio i decided to actually not edit anything out and leave the whole thing as is - plus a bunch of delay fx and some additional layers here and there. i could do a lot more mixing and editing on this, but i already spent more time on it than i would have expected to. i might tinker with it some more in the future, but this is finished enough for a wb submission.

the piece wanders, trying to find its way, finds a bit of stability in the recurring chord progression, and then confidently ends with a proper "beat" i made earlier this week using the midi controller + daw. i've hit my stride here, but sadly it is time to go.

this trip was meant to be life-affirming, and it has been. i am going to miss this place and i don't want to leave. grateful for the special people i've met here ;)
