The contemporary cross-pollination of electronic genres and styles has a way of bringing out the very best of daring, boundary-pushing musicians and creatives. Hailing from Essenbach, Germany, the contemporary producer and songwriter duo Dysfunctional Family has a bevy of obvious talents all suffusing together; from synth work to drum programming, harmonic interplay, and the massaging of the vibe, their work has a way of setting the bar a few notches higher, and is consequently gestating a particularly driven sound. As a result, The Rust is extraordinarily excited to present their latest minted works, the 10-track LP A Day At The Beach.

Walking through the front door of the album puts the listener on prime, beachfront real-estate; A Day At The Beach is quintessentially a collection of downbeat, IDM-infused tracks that flip between pulsating low end and extremely lush compositional dialogue. The overarching musical narratives are brought to life through potent Reese synthesis and hyper-dextrous percussion anchored to the interplay of chords, leads, lone piano lines, and a panoply of glitch motifs and manipulated audio artifacts. It was my pleasure to co-host this gathering in alignment with many cultures around the world to celebrate the ‘thinning of the veil’ and come together to honour the rich diversity of our community’s lineages through ceremony, dance and community connection. 

My intention with this journey was to inspire the dancers to move and release any residual ancestral trauma they may be carrying and to access the ancestral wisdom encoded in their DNA. Featuring music from all around the world, this set was an offering to celebrate and honour all of our ancestors during a deeply intentional, potent and healing evening.

Govinda has been continuously redefining and rebranding itself. After revisiting this project a myriad of times to ensure absolute perfection, Govinda presents Burning Rings of Helios, now out on Gravitas Music. This seven-track album has been Shane’s favorite project to produce thus far, as it traverses different realms of gypsy violin and dives into new inspiration stemming from circus arts. The beats are soft and subtle, yet abrasive and envelope crushing to take Burning Rings of Helios unexpected places while still staying true to Govinda.

Listeners are greeted by a mysterious violin in “CObra STyle” before encountering an upbeat, gypsy dubtronica soundscape that is composed of several twists and turns. The journey proceeds to meet the “Goblin King,” who welcomes visitors with piercing melodic vocals that accompany soothing strings and an abundance of glitch. “Inside Your World” explores the dark and haunting depths of exotic bass, with bewitching vocals that urge listeners to continue the designated path. A sultry violin fluidly glides through the sharp cosmic atmosphere, which causes eyes to wander into “Nebulous Space.” Once consciousness returns, a muted trumpet in “Smokey Memories” attempts to defog hazy recollections in a mellow blues. Soon after, live instrumentation is employed in “Bent Cipher” to distribute a gratifying electronic jazz punch. As the pilgrimage comes to an end, assorted elements featured in preceding tracks are incorporated to tie up the project into a “Twisted” finale.

Mindspring Music presents: Slaycub - Visceral Planet [MSM102]

Slaycub's new EP with four tracks that have been in the making for well over a year; a year spent revisiting, reviving, and reinvigorating them with much love and care. These are some of his most emotional works, focusing more on the flow of tension and release rather than on technicality or pure experimentation.
The word “visceral” references deep emotion and intuition, in contrast to logic or reason. Placed next to “planet” in the title of this work, it exemplifies our Earth’s tendency to act intuitively and express its innermost fire. Its creatures are driven by instinct and are fueled by palpable, deep-rooted feeling.

~ The dream state is a part of consciousness in which we can experience emotion, often without limitations imposed by logic. “Dewdrop” is a nod to a song by Cocteau Twins, whose music reverberates through the depths of my own dreams, and whose ethereal influence is felt subtly throughout this body of work. Likewise, we are able to manifest these dreams into waking life and orchestrate our own soundtrack.

~ The title track is a convergence of our planet’s elemental emotions: its nurturing soil, mournful winds, cleansing rain, and eruptions of fire. It lives through these with vehemence, and vulnerability; both polarities are expressed in this track.

~ Our reality is built upon the fundamental fabric of space-time, which itself is not concrete, but flows, warps, and wobbles in a dance with the masses of our Universe. Earth’s mere existence creates a distortion in the geometry of this fabric.

~ Our planet rides along the grooves of the sun’s distortions. Sunlight begets all life on our planet, and is our source of light and warmth. This final track encapsulates the sparkling radiance of our star and the way its heat blankets us, and how it creates an impression on us both physically and emotionally.
