Low Crows

Optically reflected sound from the grooves of an 70 year old classical music 78rpm shellac record... 

Recorded over at least 10 grooves at a time using an analog optical sensor resulting in a bizarre ghostly droning effect.  The optical sensor was fixed to a surface some distance from the record to capture the modulated reflections.  It took a great deal of concentration to position the light source by hand at the correct angle to catch the inside of the groove and reflect it towards the light sensor whilst moving it slowly across the surface of the record!  To be honest, I was truly amazed it worked this well.

Sound of Reflected Light From An Old 78 Record... (Optical Sound Experiment)

Testing out one of several surprisingly effective Feedback model DCS297C Balanced-Modulators orginally designed for educational use to demonstrate data-modulation techniques.  The units were modified for creative studio use at Hideaway including an internal PSU.  The DCS297C is based around the same Motorola MC1496 balanced-modulator chip as the Maestro RM-1 but you get two of them in the one box :-)

In this case the A input was fed with a basic sustained pad from a Peavey SpectrumSynth whilst the B input was fed from a swept sine-wave generated by a WaveTek Model 193 modulated waveform generator.

The resulting output was fed through a gorgeous 1960s all-tube Krohn-Hite laboratory filter to take out some of the harsher upper harmonics.

Made with several overdubs from a 1964 Servomex LF141 laboratory signal generator with the aux. oscillator sync'ing the main oscillator causing it to lock on to various harmonics.

1977 Polymoog 203A: Undivided Attention..

Having fun testing out an awesome PPG Wave 2.2 Digital-Analog hybrid synth from 1982.  The Wave was one of the first commercially available wavetable synths offering wavetable sequencing and lead the way to the Waldorf Wave series and the Korg Wavestation.  Unlike the later derivatives, the early models definitely had a sound of their own thanks to their 8-bit DACs and SSM2044 filters.  The whole thing has a raw yet warm sound about it and can cover a surprising amount of sonic territory.  I have long since loved the unique sound of 8-bit digital audio into analog filters!

NB: This 100% all came out of a PPG Wave 2.2.. but not necessarily in the right order :-]

1983 PPG Waveterm A: Monster Waves (Hosting a Wave 2.2)

Every time I return to this little 1U wonder from 1986 it does something that leaves me somewhat dumbfounded.. for years I overlooked the DEP-5 until a friend highly recommended it. This now 36 year old little beauty can produce some really lovely atmospheres, textures and moods thanks to its modulated effects and sweet reverb.... and the one thing that really adds to this is the multitude of knobs on the front panel allowing you to dial, tweek and explore to your heart's content - heck I wish more kit in the studio was as interactive as this - it is SO much more rewarding than fighting with endless menus and cursor buttons.

Here is some Infinite and Random Modulated Reverb in action at both normal and half playback speed...  I forget what the source instrument was - it was either the mighty Rhodes Chroma in the studio or the humble Alesis Micron in the workshop and I think that nicely demonstrates the sheer power of effects like these...
