This piece is composed with Ice Bookshop Tuning (Iceface tuning 0.1) Ice Bookshop Tuning  (a.k.a Iceface Tuned Piano 0.1) is my microtonal tuning that I've had called "Iceface Tuning" until the end of 2012.
In the beginning of 2012 I made the completely new tuning concept that I show on youtube now and somehow I decided to call it Iceface Tuning, just same as my previous tunings.
I apologize this process was a little confusing to those who had been listening to my iceface tuned music from 2007 when I released my first microtonal piece “The Ice Bookshop”.  

But from now on, I'll call that previous version of Iceface Tuning “Ice Bookshop Tuning".

I had a mystic dream. A dark haired lady was sitting on a beach of cold sea, playing an instrument made of ice. The music to my ears and even to my eyes was something I had never heard but had always dreamed of, whimsical and gorgeous, like angels' voices rolling and dancing on the ice. She smiled and said to me, "This is an iceface tuned piano. Its every black key is tuned 50 cents higher." She kept playing it until she vanished into the sea.

I thought I woke up and I went to my keyboard. My music software, Steinberg Cubase and Native Instruments Kontakt, have microtuning function, so I tuned it just as she had told me. Then I truly woke up, saw my hands playing it. By playing each black key (non diatonic note) 50 cents higher for the grace notes, it was just like what I had heard in the dream.

I had a mystice dream.
I will smile and say to you
"This is an iceface tuned piano. Its every black key is tuned 50 cents higher."

You might think it's odd, but I've decided that I should share this lucid fairy tale, "iceface tuned piano" with the world. Please have a listen, try it yourself, and share it with any musician friends you might have. I will explain how to play with this Iceface Tuned Piano concept in the next videos. Thank you!

Not Just Me ( H. Wakabayashi + JyuneticA )

For this piece I played the half iceface tuned piano, which is consist of equal temperament for the left hand (chords) and "Iceface tuning" for the right hand (melodies). Hope this piece will show how C Iceface scale sounds fine even in various non diatonic chords. The title No Coward Soul Is Minë is inspired from a poetry of Emily Brontë, Godmother of Gondal.

half iceface tuned pianoというのをやってみました。左手は平均律で和音を、右手はiceface tuningでメロディをという初めての試みですが、黒鍵をすべて50セント上げたC icefaceのスケールが様々なノンダイアトニックコードの中でなんとか調和しながら響くのが感じられるといいなと思います。今回は特に微分音のジャズのインプロヴィゼーションやクラシックを特殊な音律での演奏に興味ある方には面白いかもしれません。

This piece consists of equal temperament for the left hand and 24EDO(Equal division of the octave) for the right hand. 
This is surely a musical experiment but my true intention is to express subtler emotions and melancholic feelings one can have in the music of equal temperament we used to know. 24 EDO melodies in this video is an extensional version of Iceface tuning. Just like my Iceface tuned pieces, I play quarter tones mainly for passing notes.
So, maybe you can call it 24 icEDO :D　
I hope this video can be a good example for how to play quarter tones in popular music.

新しい微分音ピアノ曲"You are so microtonal”をアップしました。
今回は左手は通常の平均律による和音と、そして右手は通常のピアノの調律に比べて2倍に細かくなった、1オクターブ24分割の24平均律の旋律を弾いています。
音楽理論の実験的試みではありますが、微分音（24平均律の場合、半音の半音ですので四分音となります）の旋律による、心の微細な動きや不安、メランコリーを、一般に親しまれた西洋の平均律の音楽の中でどのように自然に奏でられるかが、今回の大きな試みです。なお、このビデオでの24平均律の旋律は、これまでのIceface tuningを拡張させて構成したものです。四分音を主に経過音として使用していますので、24 icEDOというわけです。
こういった方法論でどんどんポピュラーミュージックのための微分音を確立できると思います。（Native Instruments Kontaktに入ってる音源ならquarter toneという24平均律のチューニングがプリセットにあるから簡単にトライできます。）ご質問などお気軽に。

This is my very first attempt on Icface Maqam, recorded just few days ago. I didn’t really published it because it was just a test recording after hstraub's Iceface maqam post on FB page The Xenharmonic Allience I thought I should share mine as well. It’s Iceface Maqam last C.
To make it Rast, E and B are 50 cents down and E♭ and B ♭ are same as in 12EDO. Other white (diatonic) keys are just natural, and D♭ G♭ A♭ are 50cents up. 
The thing is its scale notes are Iceface Rast C but I played it as if the bass note is B -50cents and making it like tonic chord with D and F.
That’s exactly like what I was calling Iceface tuning that I used in my first microtonal piece "The Ice Bookshop" in 2006. However in 2014 I made a new concept (current 50 up black keys one) and started to promote it as Iceface tuning on youtube. It’s a twisted story but that pre-Iceface is back now as my Iceface Maqam anyway.

Icefaceのマカーム（中東の音階）Rast Cの、最初のテストコーディングです。まだまだマカームの知識が限られているため、正式にはアップロードしない予定でしたが、諸事情により急遽アップします。

基本的にはIceface(全ての黒鍵、ノンダイアトニック音を50セント上げる）
なのですが、マカームのRastCにするため、EとBは50セント下げており、それらの隣の音であるE♭ B♭はそのまま平均律のままにしています。
他の白鍵であるダイアトニックは平均律そのまま、D♭ G♭ A♭は50セント高くなっています。
一つ特殊な点として、Rast Cながら、ベース音をB-50centsの音にしており、これにDとFを加えてあたかもトニックの和音のように演奏しており、この方法論は実際には2006年からIcebook Shop作曲時に使用し、Icefaceと呼び始めたコンセプトと同じです。
2014年に現在の黒鍵だけ50セント上げるチューニングをIcefaceとしてYouTube上でプロモーションしているため事態が複雑化していたのですが、このいわばPre-IcefaceがIceface Maqamとして戻ってきたともいえるでしょう。

What's Iceface Tuning?

The concept of Iceface Tuning is to tune every sharp and flat note in each key 50 cents higher. These highered notes are now quarter tones called "ice notes" in Iceface Tuning.
You can use these ice notes mainly as passing notes and grace notes and give detune and doubling-like effects to specific notes of the melody and chord tones in the composition/performance.

I composed the 17EDO part first. I wasn't really sure which key is which note on the normal keyboard so I played it only with my ears and instinct, to make beautiful music to me. As a musician, this microtonal experiment was even a profound experience, rather than just interesting. It was like known and unknown memories rushing into my mind, like seeing parallel worlds sounding together. 
The harmony here must be extremely complicated but I found microtonal music sounds less dissonant when it's arpeggio, doesn't it? (Beyond the "out of tune"! )

17音平均律（1オクターブが17音に分割された平均律）のピアノ曲を作ろうと思い、初めて鍵盤上で試してみました。どの音がどこにあるかほとんど把握できないままの、耳だけが頼りの音探しは、思ったより面白かったです。面白いというよりむしろ、音楽家としての体験としては深遠です。あ、この響きはかなりいつもの12音平均律だとか、これは何かの微分音で聴いたことがあるなどと、未知と既知が入り混じる、平行な世界の感覚へのアプローチにすら思えました。
17音平均律だけの音だけで発表しようと思ったのですが、間違って12音平均律も一緒に鳴らしてみたところ、その方が煌びやかで美しく、未知と既知がこれまで知らない感覚で折り重なった音に聴こえました。それでまずはこのバージョンを公開することにしたのですが、あなたの耳にはどうとどくでしょうか。
(実際のハーモニーはかなり複雑ですが、アルペジオになったことでかなり聴きやすいのではないかと思います。もう、音痴だなんて言わせない〜）

How 100 tone equal temperament piano would sound like....? 
100平均律に調律されたピアノがどんな風に響くか試してみました。

100 tone equal temperament is the tempered scale derived by dividing the octave into 100 equal steps. (equal frequency ratios)

hmmm maybe I tried to play silent night, holy night in the early June but this 100TET(EDO)  piano with 88 keys didn't even have an octave in it! so I just improvised.  


100平均律では通常の12平均律とは異なり、1オクターブが12ではなく、100の音に等しく分割されています。

聖しこの夜でも（6月の頭に）弾こうと思ったものの、この千切り、ならぬ100平均律88鍵ピアノでは1オクターブも出ません。仕方ないので、即興で何か弾いてみました。

This piece consists of two parallel equal temperaments (A440Hz and its -50cents one) . Therefore it's 24EDO with 2 different 12 EDO scales. A day in Japan (binaural again)

H. Wakabayashi (composer, sound artist, Singer-SongSleeper)  

Wakabayashi studied Jazz piano at An Music School of Kyoto and then began to work as a MIDI programmer in 2001. Around that time, he began to make experimental laments and music under the influences of ambient and lounge music, pursuing landscapes that show summer and winter at the same time. In 2008, he performed at the Interface Festival in Mexico and then released a split EP on Mandorla. He has also worked as a composer for videos/films and now he is making videos himself under the name "Mewomihi".
       
In search of  in search of total new ways to compose western music he often uses his own original scales "iceface" which inclides lots of microtones.

京都のアン・ミュージックスクールにてジャズピアノを学んだ後、Midiプログラミングの仕事を始める傍ら、アンビエントやラウンジに影響されたピアノ曲や実験的な哀歌を作り、冬と夏の香りが混在した世界を目指す。


2008年、メキシコの電子音楽の祭典Interface Festival2008に出場、その後スプリットのＥＰをMandorlaよりリリースし、その後映像作品などにも音楽で携わり、自らで映像を作るようにもなる。

●たくさん曲を置いていますが、いつも全曲聴いていただける状態でもなくて、不定期に試聴可能な曲を公開したり制限したりしています。よかったら時々覗いてみてください

●まったく新しい音楽の表現を目指そうという試みのもと、 Icefaceという独自の音律を用いた作品を多く作っています。 微分音を多く含み、珍しい響きがするかもしれません。

●2012年4月3日、Soundclouder of the dayに選んでいただきました。
