Here's a 5+ hour set from a beautiful night in Vancouver with the Soul Hop crew.  The soundsystem at Vantek was singing, the crowd were getting down and it was one of those nights where 5 hours felt like 1 hour. ATFC feat Lisa Millet - Bad Habit (Dima Flying & Alex Solo Remix)

Apt. International hails from Japan and has been showing of its housier side as of late, but on the Snow Monkeys EP, veteran producer Hideo Kobayashi unleashes a venomous, coiled serpent of techno that belies any images of cuddly Japanese snow monkeys. On the flip, newcomer A. Mochi meets Kobayashi’s tough guy techno challenge measure for measure. The result is a real throwback in styles that comes as something of a mild shock considering the label’s previous output. But shaking up the formula and getting results is far from a bad thing and fans of quality music win big here on this release.

The original is big, grimy techno that has a hint of Mike Wall’s Berlin big room style and a pinch of the Droid Behavior, West Coast warehouse techno vibe. The drums are cavernous, big enough to bring airplanes out of the sky. The pace is relentless and breakneck. There is manic intensity enough to make non-rabid dogs froth here and that isn’t necessarily a bad thing as Kobayashi dissects the dance floor with laser precision and careful accents.

A. Mochi’s remix removes the punchy kicks opting for more of submerged, bong-hits-for-breakfast deep techno sound instead. The overdriven overkill of the original is still present, but Mochi restrains it and stretches it out over more of the track, building tension and working the elements with subtleness rather than the sledgehammer to the knuckles approach of the original.
It’s a nice b-side compliment that adds character to the release with enough power to stand on its own, outside the shadow of the original.

D.Fine is from Bordeaux in southern France and he is part of a new breed of French producers that doesn’t seem too concerned with the classic sounding French house scene from the 90’s but instead takes cues and inspirations from other parts of the world such as the UK dance music scene and Detroit techno.

We at Discobelle Records are proud to present his EP ”Fall”.

The EP kicks off with the title track in which an infectious vocal sample rides a playful headbobbing 808 beat interspersed with subtle hi-hats and handclaps. 

The second track ”I Don’t” swerves towards a bit of darker ride, the beat is crunchier while the diamondsharp and spaced out synths glimmer well into the night.

The final track ”Silly Eyes” gives us more of a classic sounding, housier affair in which an urging female vocal sample amidst a steadfast beat and a deep bass takes us towards the dancefloor.

Hideo Kobayashi is one of Japan’s most prolific electronic music producers, adept at crafting modern deep house as well as floor-smashing techno. As well as being a fine solo talent, Hideo works his magic with house legend Jerome Sydenham as Nagano Kitchen and counts the influential likes of Francois K amongst his fans. Right back in the late 80s Hideo was in Tokyo discovering the enfolding world of clubs and dance music. Now he is a regular headliner himself, playing all the best spaces around Asia and Europe such as Moxa in Italy, Egg in London, the notorious Stadium in Jakarta, 360 in Dubai and at various clubs in Seoul.
Hideo released his debut album, Zero in 2009 on Apt. International and a year later, his second album, a Drama, which featured appearances from Lisa Shaw, Ramus Faber, Tomomi Ukumori. Hideo’s records regularly make it into the high profile DJ bags of people like X-Press 2, Richie Hawtin, Laurent Garnier and many more. Labels like Ministry of Sound, Defected, King Street, Renaissance, Ibadan and Hed Kandi have all released his unique club wares. As well as continuing to serve up the hits in both EP and LP form, Hideo has also started his own Podcast show, Hidden Radio available on iTunes Podcast and Spotify.
