Let's Get It

The second episode of Focus Tapes is a one hour deep dive into the mystical world of Source Records. The label founded by @move-d was responsible for releasing some of the most innovative and groundbreaking music in the 90’s and early to mid 2000’s. 

In the '90s record labels were characterized by their unique traits. Some focused on specific sounds with great success, while others followed trends set by the likes of XL Recordings, Warp, and Rephlex. Certain labels have stood the test of time, enjoying a legacy that persists today. 

However, Source Records takes a different trajectory. A closer look at the catalog of this understated German entity reveals an impressive 15-year journey featuring notable names like Lowtec, Alex Cortex, Roman Flügel, Baby Ford, Reagenz, Jan Jelinek, and label co-founder Move D. Despite the enduring influence these artists now hold in electronic music, Source Records itself has not garnered the same recognition.

Part of this discrepancy may be attributed to the presence of lesser-known artists in the label's roster. For every familiar name on Source Records, there are at least two more relatively unknown talents. Stylistically, Source navigated seamlessly from explorative machine music to jazz-rooted moods and back, presenting a challenging proposition in the '90s music scene. The label weathered various industry challenges, from distribution issues to shifting trends in music journalism. Yet, in retrospect, Source's output consistently shone. 

This mix focuses on the more ambient/glitch side of the label and demonstrates how well these releases have stood the test of time. Recorded to TDK AD-90 cassette tape this is the sound of Source Records.

Carefully selected tracks mixed seamlessly and recorded to cassette tape for a high fidelity audio experience. New Episodes released in the last week of the month. 

Also keep an eye out for new episodes of “FOCUS TAPES” for mixes putting the spotlight on a single artist or label. Next episode takes a look at the seminal German electronica label “SOURCE RECORDS '' and will be released mid March. All this alongside more concept mixes which are selections put together based on a theme (no matter how abstract).
