L Plus - Priceless EP

Since L Plus signed to Technique he's become a fixture of the global drum and bass scene. His remixes, including his recent rework of Ray Foxx's Boom Boom, are spun as standard on Radio 1 and 1Xtra. He's in demand as a DJ, tearing up festivals across Europe this summer. And, of course, he's constantly killing it with his releases, so expect more murderation from the "Priceless EP".
L Plus gets us straight into the midst of the action with The Price, already dropped on Radio 1. A spit-along vocal sample, funkstep bass and ultra-clean drum programming combine to deliver an urgent introduction to the EP.
L Plus throws a curve-ball into the mix next with Generation. Jungle drums and atmospheric riffs create a lighters-in-the-air intro. Then the musicality that he can flex comes to the fore with a drop that maintains low-end drive while still delivering floating textures across the rest of the spectrum.
Next, we enter the trademark L Plus realm of Heart Breaking. He twists together influences as diverse as R&B and house with old and new skool sounds making something unique. If you had any doubt that he brings something special to the table, it's tracks like this that settle the argument.
Finally, this EP has one more trick up its sleeve, with Rock That B. Here, L Plus shows off his compositional skill as high-energy riffs, beats and bass work together to create another facet of his unique style. And not only can he deliver a tune, he shows off the production chops needed to keep this musical behemoth heavy and crisp for the dancefloor.
As he always does, L Plus shows he isn't constrained by how other people do D&B. He's got the musical and technical ability to do something a bit different, so he does. If you haven't tuned in to this man's work, then it's about time.

The German electronic virtuoso puts all rumours to bed claiming he might disappear after unleashing his collaborative non-Drum & Bass Neosignal band project a little earlier this year... Au contraire! Phace is all wrapped up in doing what he loves most; writing uncompromising music!

The theme of the EP is inspired by the omnipresent glass human being our era and society is characterized by. And each track featured on this release shines bright like glass as well. As usual we prefer to leave more detailed track by track judging to the listener!

Optiv & BTK - Picture Perfect

If you like your drum & bass, dubstep and electro with a European twist, Italian-based Subculture Music is for you. Co-founded by the mighty Maztek, the label brings pioneering electronic music forward into the future, and the label, run with Kalu and MC Shot, is ready to launch its new release, Shona/Donkey (Hanzo and Randie remix). Hanzo and Randie bring a funky, syncopated sound to their flavour of drum & bass, echoing influences like Audio, Ed Rush, Optiv and more, all of whom they have played alongside. After hooking up with Maztek and Subculture, they have never looked back. Now, they are taking their music to the forefront, showing off their style and production techniques. On Shona, a stirring, low-slung intro delicately glides into a strong build, before the whole thing drops down a level with a crunchy, rupturing bassline, and some neatly understated synths and rises. The melody seeps through underneath, as the speakers shake and the dancefloor quakes. Detailed, precise and technically brilliant, this is above and beyond your everyday drum & bass. Essential. On the flip, Hanzo and Randie remix fellow Italians Animal Defection's Donkey. N4mSkull and GBee's original from last year gets updated, reinvigorated and reimagined, as a sinewy, rolling intro moves into some electronic ground, before gathering pace to enter some neuro territory. Tough, smash-through beats come colliding at you, forcing home the point that Hanzo and Randie are at the top of their game. This one's all about the funk, ramping it up to ever-higher levels. Taking no prisoners, they burn down the dance with their forceful remix, sending others running for the hills. Strong stuff. Subculture Music have unearthed two fantastic slices of vivid, contemporary drum & bass, allowing Hanzo and Randie to do what they do best, make bangers. These are guaranteed killers, so make sure you grab your copies straight away.

BBC Radio 1 - Fleur - Turn The Lights On - (The Prototypes Remix)

Drum and bass heavyweights Black Sun Empire announced the launch of their new label, BLACKOUT music nl.  The first release on the imprint will be the highly anticipated EP by Optiv & BTK, “Bad Attitude,” which will be out on May 13.

The globally-respected drum and bass collective trio have been true innovators in electronic music for more than a decade.  “We, Black Sun Empire, want to build a stronger brand for BLACKOUT by expanding the events we are already setting up around the world and combining it with our years of experience with running successful labels. We think it is important to let the two grow together, under one name, pushing the sound and artists we feel are sometimes undervalued. By joining forces with artists we believe in, and by giving our fans (who live all around the globe) a common platform to stay informed and keep in touch, we hope to build a home for all who, like us, have a strong love for this kind of drum and bass: energy-driven, hard, melodic and a little crazy,” explain label bosses Milan Heyboer, Micha Heyboer and Rene Verdult.  

Over the last year, the duo known as Optiv & BTK have dominated the drum & bass scene with their unrelenting output of high-quality, strictly-for-the-dance-floor releases and worldwide DJ sets.  Optiv (from the UK) and BTK (from Brazil) joined forces in their new hometown of Bern, Switzerland after meeting up at various drum and bass events in the area. Once inside the studio, the collaborative vibe and rapid results made it clear that consequences would never be the same.  “Bad Attitude’ will be released worldwide on May 13.

From career-igniting releases to mighty moments from some of D&B’s biggest names, Program’s dedication to forward thinking D&B goes from strength to strength. Over the past seven releases, the label have acted as a solid platform for exciting new drum & bass prospects such as Frankee, Chroma, LoKo and Nitri as well as bolster the repertoires of longer-standing scene preachers Wickaman, Hoodlum, Mavrik, Bladerunner, RV and Paul B.

Now peering over the edge of their second year, the label is re-engaging with some of the acts they broke last summer for some equally impressive follow-up releases. Kove is the first to return to the label. A talented tattooed tearaway with a taste for both the blazing beats and the deeper side of the dance, both cuts on his Program debut - ‘Iodine’ and ‘Open Ground’ - became instant 2012 dancefloor standards, championed by key players across the board.

‘Gone’ continues his promising audio armoury with distinct maturity. Breathy and breezy, its stunning depths become apparent from the very first fluttering pad. Coated in a beautifully underplayed vocal hook, ‘Gone’ rolls with blistered bass grace as staccato kicks and snares puncture the otherwise dreamy ambience… And the groove masterfully develops with timeless dancefloor dynamics. Rolling but never quite rampaging, it represents everything that you fell in love with drum & bass in the first place: subtleties, sophistication and just a slight sense of pensive menace.     

‘Airlock’ follows. Allowing the vocal to play more of a dominant role in the mix, it’s Kove at his most yearning and poignant. Opening with a blast of minor key euphoria, the skippy, snappy breakbeats take complete control of the groove, bowing a big nod to drum & bass’s most formative period. Stark and solid, warm and rolling, as ‘Airlock’ develops we’re treated a fine balance of cruising synth washes and laidback guitar licks as the vocal whistles deep in the well-textured mix. If you’re looking to hypnotise your floor any time soon then look no further… This will have your crowd locked in tighter than a state penitentiary.

Finally, as a generous digital exclusive, Program have squeezed a second version of ‘Gone’ from Kove. The special ‘6AM’ mix takes off from the spine-shuddered mess the original left us in… And it does so with a heavier, classically trained breakbeat, fuller bodied bassline and languishing rim-shot soaked ending. Perfect for a late-night reboot or end-of-party hug-inducer, we’re anticipated some serious heavy rotation as the warmer months ease in.
