Denzel Bentley is a rare boxer. He is brave enough to face the best, he has the courage to share his journey with the fans and he is smart enough to know that this boxing game is about education.

We are biased, but understand his hunger to succeed and we have enjoyed seeing him become an active voice in his own career and development.

In the podcast world, it is rare to have ‘moments’ events or conversations that create a clear split between before and after.

If you don’t believe me, name your favourite moment from the Sky Sports Toe-2-Toe podcast, or Costello and Bunce….there are none.

I have been lucky to have a couple over the years and the biggest impact was definitely the episode on drugs with Larry.

The episode went everywhere, across countries, seas, and even sports.

It had the boxing world looking at things differently.

It is only right that, as we celebrate episode 100, we revisit one of the great characters of my podcast run and give you a wider look at doping and where we are headed.

Mad to think that this podcast is still relevant after all these years.

British boxing is in crisis. At the heart of it is a simple truth. 90% of the boxers and coaches are not at the standard that we need to deliver world champions that can hold on tom their belts for years against the best.

For too long, boxing allowed anyone to be a trainer. If you had enough money to own a gym, you were a trainer. It meant that you had a lot of bluffers and fakers in the sport. That has led to our guys being too soft, too unskilled, and too comfortable with mediocrity.

Until the fans call out the failures and blaggers in the sport, they will continue to make it up as they go along, leaving the fans with nostalgia fights to get excited about.

As fans we either get historic fight cards, or really bad fight cards, with no in-between.

What we saw this weekend was a dark omen for what is to come if we don't start addressing things now.

On Saturday night, we witnessed Chris Eubank Jr. and Conor Benn do exactly that. Driven not just by their own ambitions, but by the legacy of their fathers, and by the love and validation of the British public, they gave us one of the great nights in British boxing.


Two men, laying everything on the line. Two men, fighting for more than just victory. And in doing so, both earned something far greater, the admiration and love of the public, after years of chasing it.

The shame is, nights like this are rare. Boxing can deliver stories like these again and again… but too often, the sport takes the easy road, chasing quick money rather than building the deep, powerful narratives that make nights like this so special.
