According to certain ways of looking at the world, the only thing that truly exists is the present moment. In this view, the past does not exist (the past is only a set of memories, which we can only access in the present moment) and the future does not exist (the future is only a set of expectations, which we can only think about in the present moment). The present moment is effectively timeless. The present moment when you read this word is no different from the present moment when you read this word; even though you have a memory of reading one before the other, the reading of both are now only memories, that you can only access those memories now, in this present moment. So because this ongoing, ever-onrolling present moment is effectively timeless, people tend to speak of it as eternal.
