Creation is Creation, out February 25th on Gravitas Recordings, is a philosophical inquiry regarding the alchemy of creativity. Inspired by nature, Somatoast makes use of the natural world to serve technical, musical purposes. Seeds pods make shakers and icicles are a percussive ensemble. This electro-acoustic fusion spans six original tracks and four remixes– marking another unique development in Somatoast’s ever-evolving sound.

Tapping in Boyd Hill introduces the album with its sweeping aural environments and grounding tapping that begins the story of Creation is Creation, which is that human creativity is the same force of all creation. The tapping heard in the track was recorded live in Boyd Hill Nature Preserve in St. Petersburg, Florida. Dawn embraces the texture of a seed shaker found in Zilker Park in Austin, Texas. By letting the naturally found sounds do the talking, Dawn comes off with a simplified yet refined sound design. Namesake of the album, Creation is Creation is a jazzy approach into the essence of this album. Featuring expansive atmospheres partnered with piano riffs and inspiring lyrics, Creation is Creation dives deep into exploration of the universe that resides all around us.

An organic reprieve in the middle of the album, Kokoa features distinct usage of primitive and empowering vocals before segwaying into Icicle that was inspired from the Texas Freeze in early 2021 with lush guitar lines, rippling breakdowns and grounding bass. Lastly, Ooh Yeah is an experimental glitchy departure from the rest of the album, highlighting resounding soundscapes underneath bouncing plucks. As a bonus, the album rounds out with remixes from Lapa, Edamame, Skysia and Kaya Project.

This latest track is called "Hyphy Nature". It was inspired by both the Nature around the Bay Area, and growing up during the Hyphy Movement. For those who aren't familiar, the Hyphy Movement was a musical style of Hip Hop that originated in the Bay Area and consisted of hard beats at a tempo around 100 BPM, with very high energy drums and beats. In high school and beyond,  listening to artists like Mac Dre, too sure, Mr. FAB, the Pack, and others boldy represent this part of California became huge source of pride for me, as it did for many of the youth growing up here. It felt like I was collectively part of something special, and the energy and pride from that era still radiates through the bay area heavily. I personally was especially inspired by the underlying beats of the music, pioneered by producers like Trackademicks, EA Ski,  Rick Rock, and especially Traxamillion( Who tragically passed away last year). 

Being born in Brazil, and having parents from different European countries, I always felt like a bit of an outsider when I was young. All of my music, movie, and cultural references seemed different than those around me. So having the hyphy movement pop off as I was in high school and into hip-hop production, it felt so fun to connect with other youth around it, and led me to feel like I was connected to something bigger. It led me to feel very proud to be from the bay area. I feel so lucky to have been a part of that, and I'll hold San Francisco and the Bay Area in my heart closely forever. I'm grateful for this special influence that will forever be a part of the sound of HABITAAT.

Another big point of interest for me growing up was being connected to the specific nature around this area. I grew up as a city kid through and through, but any access I had to get into nature I was super enthusiastic about. I joined all the nature clubs of my public inner city high school, and I even became a youth ambassador for the conservation organizations. The melodic elements of the song represent the feelings I would get visiting places like the Marin Headlands, Lands end, or Golden Gate Park. I could not get enough, and that passion for conservation and connection to nature continued as a thread throughout my life to this day.  

So this track is a tribute to those two influences from the Bay Area, the Hyphy music, and the Northern California nature.

4. Moyen Thyme
(Written by Taylor Willis and Milo Hayden)

Another stellar example of how important having a writing buddy is. Moyen Thyme was orginally written in a hexagonal cabin in the woods of Deadwood, OR. The original song was a study in dub… but didn’t have any groove, or direction, and frankly lagged. In an effort to spice it up, I plugged Taylor through a series of insane dub effects while he played his guitar. Things kept on getting trippier… and while trying to figure out what to pair with the guitar, Jason Bailey came up. I knew Jason Bailey through his stellar stage management at What The Festival 2015, and Taylor knew Jason because he lived in Eugene before moving up to Portland. We gushed about his dulcimer playing and then we simultaneously decided that he *HAD* to play on Moyen Thyme. I got in touch with Jason, and he helped arrange a recording session at Sprout City Studios down in Eugene. Taylor remotely sent me his new arrangement of the track and it was a total banger. Jason was both the engineer for the session AND played the dulcimer. We had the help of two stellar interns Jasper and Raven… and the session finished ahead of time. With Jason’s playing the track suddenly had a life of it’s own, and is a testament to the having the right people in the right place at the right time. Moyen Thyme wouldn’t be possible without him. Thanks Jason!

Coming off the success of his previous singles released on the Gravitas Infusion series, Orenda returns to Gravitas Recordings to make his full EP debut with Reverie. For his first time working on a musical project of this magnitude, Trevor wanted to contribute to the emerging world bass scene. Reverie is inspired by the marriage of ethereal musical elements with aggressive, powerful bass. Representing a battle between light and darkness, which combat overhead a fusion of world music influences, all seven tracks present the stark contrast on both sides.

Listeners are transported to a majestic land in the title track “Reverie,” hastily greeted by an enchantress who observes the battle as light and darkness collide into a powerful bass. Produced alongside Equanimous, tribal chants are consistently relayed in "Mystic Descent" to accompany the beautiful soundscape and chill oscillations that follow. Cackles precede deep dub in “Numinus” as darkness strategizes its plan of attack. On the other side, the light warriors prepare for the next battle within a dark cave, while mystical currents flow through the water to provide strength in “Marmoris.” Glitch and dub unify in “Fracture,” lamenting on the ruptured state of the land. “You Know” is the calm before the storm, as a vibey bass prepares each side for its last chance at triumph. Featuring DTO, “Gāyatrī” concludes Orenda’s debut EP as each side embarks on an ethnic expedition towards the battlegrounds.
