People who know me well will confirm, if pressed, that I’m a great believer in the way, or the journey, being of greater importance than the destination. I am somewhat notorious when walking for not only being slower than everyone else but also stopping every few seconds to marvel at some small example of the wonder of the natural world.

This makes the way or journey very similar in meaning and feeling to the other word used for such meanderings, wherever they may lead us in life, the Tao (道). This refers to our path through life and for me one that is far too important to be rushed through merely to get to the destination or the end. 

It reminds me of the phrase, "It is better to travel in hope than to arrive," which is attributed to Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson, and which means the journey, with its anticipation and experiences, holds more value than the final destination, as arrival can bring disappointment, while hope fuels continuous growth and meaning. It emphasizes focusing on the process, growth, and future possibilities (hope) rather than just the end goal (arrival) … and, of course, once one has arrived at the destination it is never the final one - until it is ! - and it can be argued that it is at this point that an even greater journey begins.

Such mental meanderings often occur to me on those late night journeys when the miles and minutes merge into a seemingly whole new dimension; and although it may differ geographically, the journey is always the same, it’s just the definition of home that changes. 

Home, I’ve found, is a very moveable feast; this composition was written recently when I was still unaware of where I was going to live. As I write this the first tentative steps on the journey to a new home are being taken. Home is - to misquote Paul Young - wherever I place my beanie, and wherever my heart tells me I belong. In that sense I am exceptionally lucky in that, whatever the circumstances, I can never be truly homeless.
