Kylie Ladd was captured by the theme of David Campbell's poem "Mothers and Daughters" when she was just a teenager. 

It's a relationship she explores in her new novel, which is set in a fictional remote Aboriginal community on the Dampier Peninsula, north of Broome. 

Also a psychologist and mother, Kylie says she was also keen to write about the themes of racism, social media, and independence. 

She spoke about the book with Hilary Smale for ABC North West and Kimberley Mornings.

Perth Kayaker Steve Bird trains on the Swan River, but will be travelling to the Rio Olympics later this year as part of the Australian sprint canoe team.
