Velvet Rope Crowd Control - Where the floor starts to fade

“A wake in shadows” is a funerary dirge for the lost and an implement of catharsis for the here and now. A warm embrace for cold nights when loneliness scrapes at the frozen windowpanes and shadows of ourselves dance on the periphery of the firelight. In the darkness of a hushed forest and a quiet mind, the leaves fall from whispering trees, their limbs shed bare in the frigid moonlight. In the spring the roots will feed on the past and sing bittersweet life into the canopy with a long sigh of ephemeral recompense. 


This album isn’t meant to keep a listener sad or dwelling in trauma. But it can be difficult to relate to bright and joyful music when navigating a dark place. It’s my hope that ‘a wake in shadows’ will be a safe and pensive companion while dealing with grief or other heaviness or just a soundtrack at your hearthside.

Hanuš is a holistic collection of remembrance and reflection of my late friends John and Jacob, both of which are the names of the main characters in the film Spaceman which coincidentally became a deep inspiration while writing, recording and forming its concept. The overall theme of the Dreone project (as some may already know from Driftdown Procedure) is that the souls and spirit of my fallen companions live within the systems of a sentient spacecraft and its humanoid manifestation/android, the notion of which allows me the mental freedom to explore the cosmos through music and be a bit more experimental with my sound. This album in particular is about them traveling together through the echoes of memories and the loneliness of space to witness the beginning and end of everything, leading the listener to acceptance through catharsis.

Driftdown Procedure follows the Dreone craft/AI humanoid system down through a distant planets atmosphere after calamity and engine failure. This is the beginning of Dreones long journey towards sentience... 

Dreone is a sort of metaphor/vessel for my late friends Jacob and John, my childhood best friends/brothers who both made the choice to end their lives prematurely and left this earth to journey into the stars. We were inseparable. For me, their spirit now lives on within the Dreone system, exploring deep space, learning the cosmos and re-gaining sentience which will include senses humans can only dream of. Several other friends in our circle left shortly after them and more continue to leave to this day. Their memories and lived experiences too, are uploaded to the machine so I don't feel so alone... 

(Jacob was a graffiti artist with the tag-name, "Dreone")

Repose is an ambient experiment created with the intention of aiding sleep and meditation. The music is meant to replace the space in our mind taken up by thoughts anxiety and worry. 

I calibrated my instrument’s tuning to 432hz, which has indeed given it a different feel. However, I cannot say with scientific or historical confidence that tuning in that way is truly more beneficial to mind body or spirit. I can say that the long-form music contained in this album easily disappears into the background along with the over active mind. 

A field recording from the forest has also been buried within to subtly keep the listener grounded as not to float too far away. 

For those like me who have trouble with sleep or meditation, this album could prove to be a beneficial tool and an artful listening experience for other fans of the genre.
