Flowers Tune is a popular Chinese folk song dated back to the 18th century, during the period of the Qianlong Emperor of the Qing Dynasty. There are many versions of the tune originated from different provinces in China, with two more well-know ones are from Jiangsu Province and Zhejiang Province. Over the years, this lovely song gained popularity both in China and abroad. It was used in Puccini’s Italian Opera ‘Madam Butterfly’ and performed during events such as 2004 Summer Olympics, 2008 Summer Olympics and 2010 Shanghai Expo opening ceremony.
This piece is selected to be performed in 15th International Handbell Symposium, Liverpool, UK.

Flowers Tune Excerpt

In ancient China, the dragons was a symbol of power, strength, and good luck for people who are worthy of it.  On Spring Equinox, the Emperor would go the Altar of the Sun, officiate a ritual in order to pray for the country so that his people could live in affluence in the coming year.  It was believed that the rituals could drive away bad lucks and natural disasters, bring good fortune and bountiful harvest to the people.  Written in contemporary style with multiple tonalities, the composer intends to depict the mysterious culture of ancient China in these sacrificial rituals.  

The music is composed by Hong Kong composer Miss Viola Yuen, who is commissioned by the handbell Association of Hong Kong with sponsorship from CASH Music Fund for the 16th International Handbell Symposium in Jeju, Korea.

Rite Of Dragon Demo

“Gong Xi Gong Xi” means congratulations in Chinese. This was written by Chen Gexin (1913-1961) in 1946.  The song’s lyrics is about celebrating the Chinese/Lunar New Year and this is one of the most popular Chinese new year song in the world.

This live recording was performed by Bell Allure,  a Hong Kong Handbell group from Hong Kong Handbell Academy, conducted by Miss Emily Li at the 15th International Handbell Symposium in UK.

Gongxi Gongxi Exceprt

Jasmine Flowers, also know as "Mo Li Hua", it was created during the Qing Dynasty in 18th century.  This is the most popular folk song in both China and aboard.  The song has slightly different melody and different lyrics, which depends on different regions.  In this arrangement, it is included two versions of the melody from Jiangsu Province, and the other from Zhejiang Province.

This is a Proof of Concept for my newly recorded Handbell Sample Library.  I recorded bells C3 through C8, with basic ring, mallet, pluck, and mart techniques.  Processing and organizing all the recordings has been slow.  But I just finished the static ring, and loaded it into DirectWave, FLStudio's sampler.


Carol Of The Handbells

Josquin Desprez's Ave Maria is a Motet (Catholic Chant with new melodies and multiple parts) from the Medieval Period.  It's written in the Polyphonic style.  Polyphonic music is based off of Chants from the Catholic Mass.  But instead of Melody and Harmony, each part is written as a separate melodic idea.

This piece starts off with the original Ave Maria Chant, sung in a round, then Desprez starts to change the melody in each line, eventually creating completely new melodies.  The ending is somewhat unique for Polyphonic, as it's almost a 4 part harmony, certainly paving the way for the Baroque period.

This is a direct copy of the original piece (or as close as modern meter allows).  I used my new Handbell Sample library.  The only editing I did was to remove doubled notes and overlaps that would case playback errors with the MIDI sample library.  I've also added experimental panning to the samples, however it's leaning the left some.  My calculations for panning 61 bells equally was a bit off.

 "Hing" is a stone-made percussion instrument from ancient China. It can be performed in a similar manner as the "Bianzhong", bronze bells with different pitches that are hanged on a large wooden frame and struck with a mallet. In the ancient book of 'History of the Early Tang Dynasty' described the sound from the "hing" as the 'sound of winter'. The letter "H" from the word "H'ing" means "happiness" and "handbells", "-ing" reflects a continuous meaning of the sound that are produced as well as the passing out of good music.
