Having grown up in the Mid-West, trains are in my core.  Go figure.  It is of interest that this piece is actually a total deconstruction/remix of a track posted earlier called "Hashmal" (see below).  Essentially, I took Hashmal (a computer-generated piece),  tenderized it, scrambled it, fed it through a sonic sausage grinder several times, cut it as thin as prosciutto and then, stitched it together, et voila!  Here we are - a total transformation with the essence of the original piece continuing to crackle, bristle and spark.  All aboard.

Note: This was a "serial" improv, meaning I improvised the first track I laid down and then improvised the other tracks, one after the other.  Rough recording - just getting my new system together and this was one of the first out of the chute.  Very little, if any editing or effects, EQ, Compression. etc.

Messin' on the Sunny Side

This piece is based on the following:  I have long wondered at the percentage of "ambient" sound we suppress: infrastructure noises; highway traffic; fog horns; etc. etc.  That leads me to ponder the cost, if any, of utilizing a portion of our "energy" to continually suppress such sounds.   Finally, that in liberating and "redeeming" said disregarded, suppressed sounds, one can experience beauty and musicality.  This piece was made by my carrying a handheld digital recorder and perambulating a wide swath of my home neighborhood.   Moving through inhabited, to graveyard district industrial, to waterfront, underpass, basketball (that's the ghost of John Cage shooting hoops).  The buildings hum and the birds sing counterpoint.  I have managed, thus far, to suppress an overwhelming urge to start caressing, folding, manipulating, pounding these sounds into something else.  As they stand, however, many of them would be worthy of any electronic ambient composition and I wanted to present them in their natural glory.  Hence, while doing a minimal amount of trimming, snipping and constructing a coherence to the piece, I stayed away from reverb, looping, delay, compressor etc. etc.

A couple of things:  Some of the sounds are church services that I passed by.  I don't know the churches or the singers but I found them to be exceedingly beautiful and of great meaning to me.  It is with profound respect that I offer my thanks.  Similarly, I don't know who took the picture...it looked cool and appropriate, however.  Thank you!

Meditations On The Tower, Hermit And Empress

I'm posting with some trepidation.  I mean, Bach?  The Most High? Even on this, the world's simplest piece (at least on the surface), I am aware that my technical deficits are such that I can play this for the rest of forever and it still will not touch the hem of Bach's lower garments.  Anyway you slice, though, this is like concentrated sunshine in a bottle and I wanted to share its beauty as best I can.  May this bring some peace, joy and beauty to your lives.

Such a beautiful piece of music!  I am honored to play it, even if imperfect and unpolished.  Once properly burnished, I will (maybe) repost an updated version.  At this point, it's way too cool of a piece to wait for "perfection."

A remarkable composer (on SoundCloud) and I were discussing the different aural colors of the notes.  In particular, he called my intention to D and E and their painterly aspects.  I find color/sound to be fascinating, so following his advice...I sat down to explore the different Ds and Es and their relationship to themselves and their playmates and this was the result.  A meta-funhouse ride through a changing dreamscape of colors and gradations.

The Music of Sound...really!!  It's all grist for the mill.  I visualize Sound/Music as colors, shapes and forms rather than notes in a scale.  I look upon each of these pieces as individual environments and/or sculptures in which to spend some time, looking round, feeling the curves, hanging out, exploring... Each composition is based on different elements, structures and rules or lack thereof.  Consequently, each is unique unto itself.  

Blissfully free of genre, everything is fair game:  beats; melodies; disquiet; washes; pulses; broken clichés and memes; subliminals; words and voices; chaos; sonorities; field recordings; indeterminacy; world music; the holy; the gutter; otherworld music; drones; synths; samples, etc. etc.  etc.  

I enjoy entering into the mitochondria of what makes a sound  that particular sound and then genetically change it into something entirely different than what it was - with just the essence lingering.  I also like to explore the "in-betweens" - spaces between beats, frequencies, timbres, spaces, tones, etc. In large part, simply, I'm curious to explore it all.  Suffice it to say, the wider your aperture the more you will hear and experience.  Et voila!

Oh!  Headphones will likely provide a more fulsome listening experience for many of the pieces.
