Our Fallen Heroes was composed by Joseph S. Peckham in 1894. It was performed by the "President's Own" United States Marine Corps Band in the funeral procession for President John F. Kennedy.

Our Fallen Heroes

Joseph S. Peckham composed "Our Fallen Comrade" in 1887. The funeral march was dedicated to Avery W. Hayes, who was the bandmaster of the U.S.S. New Hampshire, a training ship stationed at the Naval Base in Newport, Rhode Island. Hayes died in Newport in 1882.

Joseph S. Peckham was an original member of the band at the Naval Training Station in Newport and an active musician throughout the city.

The Venture March was composed by Nahan Franko in 1909. The march was dedicated to Alfred G. Vanderbilt. The Venture was Vanderbilt's prize-winning coach, winning awards in the United States and Europe.

The Training Station Two Step was composed by Charles Cowie in 1898. The composer dedicated the work to Commander John McGowan, U.S.N., Commanding Naval Training Station, Newport, R.I.

The music was published by J.H. Barney, Jr. & Co. in Newport. The music was provided by the Naval War College Archives.

Training Station Two Step

La Rumba was composed by J. Tim Brymn in 1913. It was composed for dancers Joan Sawyer and Lew Quinn, and performed at the Casino in Newport, Rhode Island. The piano version was arranged by William H. Tyers.

La Rumba - Tango Argentine

Tom Clark composed the Priscilla March in 1895. The Priscilla was a steam ship with the Fall River Line, going between Boston and New York City, with a stop in Newport. The march would have been played by the band on the ship during its travels.

Kenneth Price composed the Bellevue Promenade in 1878. The work was performed by the band of the 1st Regiment U.S. Artillery during their performances in Newport. 

Bellevue Avenue is where most of the Gilded Age "Cottages" we located in the city.

F.B. Helmsmuller composed this set of dances in 1856. They were dedicated to Benjamin Weaver of Newport, Rhode Island. Weaver was the proprietor of the Ocean House Hotel in Newport. The hotel was one of the summer homes of the Germania Musical Society while they performed in Newport during the summer seasons.

Annibale Buglione composed this march in 1901. Buglione ended his decades of military service as the bandmaster of the 4th U.S. Artillery Regiment Band. Before coming to the United States he performed in the orchestra at La Scala Opera House in Milan.

US Artillery Corps March

Composed in 1854 by Oscar Comettan, the Wreck of the San Francisco tells the story of the tragedy at sea, claiming the lives of well over 100. The steam ship was carrying the 3rd United States Artillery Regiment from NY to California on its maiden voyage in December 1853 when it sank. 

The music was dedicated to the Captain Lowe of the Kilby, Captain Stouffer of the Antarctic, and Captain Creighton of the Three Bells who saved hundreds of lives.

The final dance in the set "Sounds from Newport" as played by the Germania Musical Society. Remembrance is a set of four dances composed by Carl Bergmann in 1854.

Remembrance

The Innovation Tango was composed in 1914 by Arthur N. Green. He dedicated the tango to Mrs. Stuyvesant Fish. You might recognize the name Mrs. Fish from the HBO show "The Gilded Age" She is one of the few characters based on real life people!

Innovation Tango

J.S. Peckham composed this march in 1896. The Gold Bugs referred to those who favored basing the U.S. monetary system on only gold instead of including silver. It was popularized in the 1896 Presidential Election with the supporters of the Democrat William McKinley wearing gold pins, neckties, and more.

Gold Bugs - McKinley March

Richard H. Barker composed "The Yacht Club March" in 1895. It is dedicated to the New York Yacht Club. The original Newport home of the New York Yacht Club (Station No. 6) is where the Mooring Restaurant is today.

Governor Sprague's Grand March was composed by William D. Lake in 1861 and published by T.W. Wood of Newport, Rhode Island. Wood's music store was located at 83 Thames Street.

Sprague was the Governor of Rhode Island from 1860 to 1863. He participated in the First Battle of Bull Run as a sitting Governor.

"Carrie" Waltz is a collection of Waltzes composed by J.M. Lander in 1884. The dedication reads, "Respectfully dedicated to Miss Astor." 

Carrie Astor (1861 - 1948) was the fourth child of William and Caroline Astor (the leader of the "Four Hundred" The waltz was composed the year Carrie married Marshall Orme Wilson.

"Carrie" Waltz

The Yacht America Schottisch was composed in 1851 by Johann Munck. It was dedicated to Commodore John C. Stevens of the New York Yacht Club.

In 1851, The America won the Royal Yacht Squadron Regatta, to be later named the America's Cup. The Yacht was sold a number of times and served in the Confederate and Union Navies during the Civil War.

Yacht America Schottisch

William R. McQuown composed the Puritan March in 1885. Born in Kentucky in 1842, he accepted a position as the leader of the Newport (R.I.) Band in 1876, and in 1882 became the leader of the band of the U.S.S. New Hampshire, stationed at the Naval Training Station in Newport. 

The Puritan was the winner of the 1885 America's Cup, against the British Yacht Genesta.

William H. Astor (1792-1849), nephew of John Jacob Astor, Sr. composed "The Park Rondo" most likely in the 1830s while working as a music teacher in New York City. William was the son of Georg Peter Astor, a flute maker in London.
