Paul Rouse - Economic change in Ireland in the 1950s

Matt Golder is Professor in the Department of Political Science at Pennsylvania State University. He is Director of the Honors Program in Political Science and has previously served as the Director of Undergraduate Studies. He is a first-generation high school graduate and immigrant who grew up in the United Kingdom. He received his Ph.D. in 2004 from the Department of Politics at New York University. Prior to this, he received an M.A. in French Studies from the Institute of French Studies at New York University, as well as an M.Phil. in European Politics and Society and a B.A. with honors in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics from Oxford University. He has also taught at Florida State University, the University of Iowa, and the University of Essex.

His research focuses on political representation. In addition to articles in a variety of journals, he has also published three books, Interaction Models: Specification and Interpretation, Principles of Comparative Politics, and Foundations in Comparative Politics. Together with Sona Golder, he runs the CP Group, a lab-based research group that comprises post-doctoral, graduate, and undergraduate students interested in comparative politics. He currently serves on the advisory board for the Electoral Integrity Project (2013-) and is a team member on an international project looking at Populism and the Future of Democracy (2021-). Previously, he has been a member of the executive board for the Making Electoral Democracy Work project led by André Blais at the University of Montreal. In addition to being the chair of the American Political Science Association’s Section on Representation and Electoral Systems (2011-2013), he has been the co-editor of the Comparative Politics Newsletter (2015-2018) and has served on the editorial boards for the American Journal of Political Science, Comparative Political Studies, and the Journal of Politics. His research has been funded by Canada’s Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, the United Kingdom’s Economic and Social Research Council, and the Tokyo Foundation for Policy Research.

Elizabeth Buettner has been Professor of Modern History at the University of Amsterdam since 2014.  Her research has centered on British imperial, social, cultural, and migration history since the late nineteenth century along with other European nations’ histories of late colonialism, decolonization, and their domestic ramifications.  

Key publications include: Empire Families: Britons and Late Imperial India (Oxford University Press); Europe after Empire: Decolonization, Society, and Culture (Cambridge University Press); and Decolonizing Colonial Heritage: New Agendas, Actors and Practices in and beyond Europe (Routledge).

She has also contributed to a number of edited collections, including The Oxford Handbook of the Ends of Empire, A Concise Companion to History, and Settlers and Expatriates: Britons Over the Seas.  Her recent book, Europe After Empire: Decolonization, Society and Culture (Cambridge University Press, 2016) examines British, French, Dutch, Belgian and Portuguese histories of coming to terms with the end of empires after the Second World War, focusing on the domestic impact of decolonization, postcolonial migration, the emergence of multicultural societies, and selective memories of empire.

Elizabeth Buettner - Europe after Empire: Decolonization, Society, and Culture

AFTERLIVES: Grannies, Guns, and Archives - Tracing revolutionary and post revolutionary women's lives.

In June 2023 Professor Caitríona Beaumont  (LSBU / UCD) joined UCD historians Dr Mary McAuliffe and Dr Fionnuala Walsh to record a podcast on a new project: AFTERLIVES.

The aim of the project is to uncover the afterlives and trace the life stories of lesser known activist women.

As Beaumont explains, the inspiration for the project came from a surprising discovery.

"I got a bit of a surprise a few years ago when my cousin shared a photo with me of our grandmother. Instead of the typical portrait or family group there was my beloved grandmother, my “Maimeó”, as a young woman in her twenties grinning at the camera while perched on a bicycle holding a rifle in one hand and a fishing rod in the other....

Discovering this photo of Maírín with a rifle, and sharing her little known story of activism during and after the Irish Revolution and Civil War has led to a new history project in collaboration with a number of academics, including Dr Mary McAuliffe and Dr Fionnuala Walsh of University College Dublin...Together we want to uncover the afterlives and trace the life stories of lesser known activist women. We want to better understand and acknowledge the contributions of the women frozen in time in old photos in homes and attics around the country, to the Ireland that we live in today" - Professor Caitríona Beaumont (LSBU / UCD).

AFTERLIVES: Grannies, Guns, and Archives - Tracing revolutionary & post revolutionary women's lives

A recording of a paper given at the UCD Centre for War Studies in March 2014. The paper, The Irish Revolutionary Generation, was given by Professor Roy Foster. 

Prof. Roy Foster (University of Oxford) is the Carroll Professor of Irish History at Hertford College Oxford and has written widely on Irish history, society and politics in the modern period, as well as on Victorian high politics and culture; the authorised biography of Yeats; Ireland in the late 20th Century; and currently the Irish revolutionary generation of 1890-1920, subject of his 2012 Ford Lectures, and a forthcoming book (2014). He is also a well known broadcaster, cultural commentator and critic.

Professor Foster was introduced by the Director of the UCD Centre for War Studies, Professor Robert Gerwarth.

Illegal Abortion Cases in Twentieth-Century Ireland - Cara Delay

Eoin O'Malley is an Associate Professor in political science at the School of Law and Government, Dublin City University. There he teaches politics and public policy and is the Director of the BA in Economics, Politics and Law.

His research specialism is Irish politics and particularly on the position of the Taoiseach and cabinet government in Ireland, though he also does work on the Irish party system, media coverage of Irish elections and public policy. 

He has authored over forty articles in peer-review journals. Eoin wrote a textbook, Contemporary Ireland (Palgrave Macmillan 2011), and co-edited four other books on Irish politics. The most recent book is Resilient Reporting: Media Coverage of Irsh Elections since 1969.  He is a former co-editor of Irish Political Studies. As a regular columnist in the Sunday Independent Eoin is a frequent contributor to national debates.

Digital Cultures is one of the research themes for the UCD College of Arts and Humanities Research Strategy for 2020-2024. The strategy brings together and supports the combined research excellence from across the College’s Schools, Institutes, Centres and subject disciplines.

As part of the Digital Cultures theme of the strategy, Dr Charles Ivar McGrath (UCD) and Dr Suzanne Forbes (Open University) recently gave an online presentation entitled: ‘Our shared built military heritage: the online mapping, inventorying and recording of the army barracks of Ireland, 1690-1921’. The presentation took place in January 2024 and focused on their work on the Army Barracks of Ireland project. The project is funded by the North South Research Programme and co-lead by University College Dublin and The Open University.

The project team are currently preparing a comprehensive online map of all army barracks operational on the island of Ireland between 1690 and 1921, due for launch in early 2024.

The online mapping, inventorying and recording of the army barracks of Ireland, 1690-1921

David Art is an Associate Professor of Political Science at Tufts University (Medford, MA). David Art's field is comparative politics, with a regional focus on Europe. Professor Art's research interests include extremist political parties and movements, the politics of history and memory, and comparative historical analysis in the social sciences. 

He is the author of Inside the Radical Right: The Development of Anti-Immigrant Parties in Western Europe (Cambridge University Press, 2011) and The Politics of the Nazi Past in Germany and Austria (Cambridge University Press, 2006). His articles have appeared in Comparative Politics, German Politics and Society, Party Politics, and West European Politics. 

Professor Art is Co-Convenor of the European Consortium for Political Research's (ECPR) Standing Group on Extremism and Democracy. During the 2008-2009 academic year he was a Max Weber Postdoctoral Fellow at the European University Institute.

Positive in Prison: HIV stories from a Dublin Jail is a docu drama podcast based on research by Dr Janet Weston (London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine).

The 1980s HIV/AIDS crisis may be recent history, but the experiences of those who lived through it are rapidly disappearing from the public mind. To reintroduce one specific collection of experiences, from the HIV/AIDS separation unit in Dublin’s largest prison Dr Weston created a podcast with partners Digital Drama based on oral histories and archival research.

Positive in Prison: HIV stories from a Dublin Jail

This episode features the renowned playwright and poet Frank McGuinness who gave a paper entitled "Living With Mortality: A Short Stay in Switzerland" on February 25th 2010 in the Humanities Institute of Ireland, UCD. Frank spoke about the issue of mortality as treated in drama from Greek theatre to contemporary work, including his adaptation of Ibsen's Ghosts and his screenplay for the widely acclaimed and BAFTA nominated BBC drama "A Short Stay in Switzerland" which tells the story of Dr Anne Turner who chose to end her life in a Dignitas clinic in Switzerland in January 2006.

Frank McGuinness - Living With Mortality: A Short Stay in Switzerland

Joe Mulhall is the Director of research at HOPE not hate, the UK's largest anti-fascism organisation and an expert on far-right extremism. He has a PhD on the history of fascism and his books include Drums in the Distance: Journeys in the Global Far Right; British Fascism After the Holocaust and The International Alternative Right (Co-Author).

He writes regularly for the print media including for the Guardian, Independent and New Statesman and appears regularly on broadcast media including the BBC News at Ten, Radio 4’s Today programme, The Moral Maze and Channel 4 News, among others.

Sarah McKibben - Courtly Seductions: Reading a Bardic Love Poem in the 21st century

In this episode, a recording of a paper by Neil Johnston from National Archives (UK). His paper was entitled 'Rebuilding the State Papers Ireland for the 21st century: an experiment'.

Abstract:
Integrating the State Papers Ireland (INSPIRE) is a new research strand within the Virtual Record Treasury of Ireland [VRTI] digital humanities project that has a multiplicity of objectives. At its core is the intention to incorporate digital images and transcriptions for SP 63 and SO 1 into the VRTI for the years 1660–1715. This is approximately 30,000 images and 12,000 transcriptions. The transcriptions will likely reach over 1 million words in text. This is a logistical challenge but worthless if the information is neither findable nor comprehensible to the interested public. To allay this, significant work is being developed with the underlying metadata to ensure it is verifiable and robust; thereafter, the INSPIRE team is collaborating with Research Software Engineers at the TCD ADAPT Centre to make the entities within the data discoverable in a Knowledge Graph. This talk will outline the work undertaken and where it may lead researchers in the coming years.

Neil Johnston - Rebuilding the State Papers Ireland for the 21st century: an experiment

In this episode, a recording of a paper by Frances Nolan from University College Dublin. Her paper was entitled 'Law versus practice: women’s property ownership in early modern Ireland'.

Funded by an SFI-IRC Pathway Fellowship and hosted by UCD School of History, Law versus Practice is an interdisciplinary project that aims to interrogate the nature, development and impact of women’s property ownership in early modern Ireland – a period characterised by war, plantation and demographic change. By centring women’s property ownership, Law versus Practice will challenge the historiographical preoccupation with male landownership and more determinedly integrate women’s experience into the history of the island as a contested space. The project employs digital tools to gather data from a wide range of primary source material; this includes Chancery records, the Books of Survey and Distribution, submissions and evidence from the 1663 Court of Claims, the records of the forfeiture trustees (1700-03) and the Registry of Deeds. The collection and collation of geographic, legal and biographical data will underpin the construction of a relational database, which will interact with a Geographical Information System to ‘map’ women’s property ownership across time and place. By reflecting on initial findings from Law versus Practice, this paper will consider the opportunities and challenges presented by digital tools and approaches and the potentialities of gender as a lens for analysis in digital humanities projects.

Frances Nolan - Law versus practice: women’s property ownership in early modern Ireland

In this episode, a recording of a paper by Evan Bourke from Maynooth University. His paper was entitled 'Exploring the usage of poetic motifs in Irish bardic poetry: a networked approach'.

The literary landscape of early modern Ireland was dominated by bardic poetry, the work of a professional caste of poets (or filidh) who were trained in the bardic schools during the period 1200–1650. Poets composed poems to legitimize their patrons’ claims to leadership, and they, in return, were paid handsomely in goods, protection, and hospitality. Despite the cultural and social importance of these highly transactional patronage connections, the world of the bardic poet remains on the periphery of literary historical scholarship on Renaissance Ireland. Even when this corpus is drawn upon, the poetry is often explored for its immediate historical references. Building on Michelle O’Riordan’s argument that “poets participated creatively and consciously in contemporary literary movements, filtering and selecting to suit the sensibilities of the vital indigenous literary culture” this paper explores motif usage in more detail. It does this by drawing on the motif metadata in the BPD to extract motif networks, andexploring what the most frequently used motifs were and how this changed over time/place. Drawing on the poetry of Eochaidh Ó hEódhusa and Fearghal Óg Mac an Bhaird, it explores whether these poets drew on the same motifs, whether they combined similar motifs, whether they used similar motifs when written for the patrons they shared in common, and how this differed to other active poets at this time. Overall, it showcases how a digital approach to Irish language poetry can assist in the gradual move towards the inclusion of the vernacular in literary historical scholarship.

In this episode we chat about the history of the ICA and its activities over the past 100 years to learn more about the contribution of this national women’s organisation to Irish history, Irish society and to the everyday lives of women in Ireland.

Women's Grassroots Activism Podcast - Episode 5: Crafting and Craftivism

In this week’s episode of “Recording the Revolution”, Conor and Harlan are taking a look at Harlan's interview with James M Dillon, the former leader of Fine Gael from 1959 to 1965 and son of the Home Rule MP John Dillon. James Dillon sheds light on what life was like during the Irish Revolutionary period and talks about his time spent in the Dail from the 1930s onwards. James Dillon was interviewed by Harlan on 17 March 1973.

The Harlan Strauss Tapes

In 1972, Harlan J Strauss, a young American PhD student, came to Ireland and interviewed veterans of the Irish independence struggle - men and women, at this point in their 70s and 80s, who shared their experiences, sometimes for the first time.

These audio recordings sat in Harlan’s attic in Washington, DC for decades, unpublished and unheard. In 2022, Harlan brought them to Dublin and deposited them at the National Folklore Collection at UCD. This podcast explores the things those people said and how those who lived through the Irish revolution saw it fifty years after the fact.

Harlan’s tapes offer often unparalleled insights into both the experiences and perceptions of revolutionaries reflecting back on their youth. Now, 50 years later, Conor and Harlan have teamed up to delve into these interviews and get an insight into the mind of an Irish revolutionary.

In the final episode of “Recording the Revolution”, Conor and Harlan return back to the archive and pluck their final tape, which is Harlan's interview with Irish politician and managing director of the Abbey Theatre, Ernest Blythe. Ernest Blythe reflects on his early years in the IRB, the role he played in the Free State’s execution of Anti-treaty IRA members and his views on the partition of Ireland. Ernest Blythe was interviewed on 13 March 1972.

The project comprised of two workshops which were organised by Mary McAuliffe (Director, UCD Gender Studies), in partnership with the National LGBT Federation (NXF), and funded by Research Ireland New Foundations award.

Workshop 1: History of LGBT Activism in Ireland took place on April 3rd 2025 in UCD Humanities Institute.

David McCullagh is a journalist and author. A graduate of University College Dublin where he studied history and politics – McCullagh has a PhD in politics – he was RTÉ News Political Correspondent for 12 years before being appointed presenter of Prime Time in 2013. McCullagh and has written two books – The Reluctant Taoiseach, a biography of John A. Costello (Gill and MacMillan, 2010) and A Makeshift Majority, a history of the first Inter-Party Government (IPA, 1998)

'The “composition for cess” controversy and the position of the Old English in mid-Elizabethan Ireland, c.1575-84' by Dr David Heffernan (University College Cork).

It is widely appreciated that the Old English community of the Pale and beyond in Ireland became profoundly disaffected from crown rule during the reign of Elizabeth I, owing to, among other issues, their refusal to conform to state sponsored Protestantism and their supersession in high political office by the New English. Overshadowing all this was the burden imposed on this community to fund the advancing Tudor conquest of Ireland through the ‘cess’ or purveyance. Upon returning to the viceregal office in 1575 Sir Henry Sidney attempted an alternative system of taxation devised by the clerk of the privy council, Edmund Tremayne, known as ‘composition for cess’, whereby landholders in Ireland would compound to pay a fix rent in lieu of the ‘cess’. The animosity this aroused amongst the Old English and the constitutional controversy which ensued have been well noted in the historiography of the period. Yet the episode has typically been understood as having occurred in a bubble between 1576 and 1578. This paper argues that the ‘composition’ must be understood within the wider context of the crown’s relations with the Old English in the late sixteenth-century. Moreover unrest over the ‘composition’ and the ‘cess’ must be understood within the wider framework of discontent at government policy and official corruption in late Tudor Ireland. Finally, by extending discussion of the ‘composition’ into the mid-1580s it demonstrates that far from being a temporary ‘crisis’ unrest over the ‘composition’ persisted throughout the Desmond Rebellion and beyond.

David Heffernan. “composition for cess” controversy & Old English in mid-Elizabethan Ireland

In this special episode to mark the centenary of the Russian Revolution (1917), University College Dublin historian Dr Judith Devlin examines one of the defining events of the 20th century. Dr Devlin discusses the tumultuous events of 1917, including: the lead up to the February Revolution; Lenin's return from exile; the October Revolution and its aftermath; the ensuing Civil War; and how Russians today commemorate the events of 1917.

Judith Devlin is Senior Lecturer in the School of History at University College Dublin. Her research focuses on Soviet and post-Soviet Russia and her publications include 'Slavophiles and Commissars: Enemies of Democracy in Modern Russia ' (Macmillan) and 'The Rise of the Russian Democrats: Causes and Consequences of the Elite Revolution' (Elgar).

Dr Devlin spent a decade in the Department of Foreign Affairs, working on European political integration, before being sent to Paris and then Moscow, where she served as Gorbachev's perestroika got underway. 

Her initial research interests lay in the popular culture of 19th century France and the history of French psychiatry, the subject of her first book 'The Superstitious Mind' (Yale). Following her years in Gorbachev's Russia, she shifted her attention to the culture and politics of the Stalin era and her current research project concerns the Stalin cult.

Mestizaje and the Frontiers of Race and Caste in Colonial Mexico with Professor Ben Vinson III (Case Western Reserve).

Professor Ben Vinson III is Provost and Executive Vice President at Case Western Reserve University at Cleveland, Ohio. He is also a Professor of History at Case Western’s Department of History. 

Professor Vinson is a historian of Latin America whose scholarship focuses on colonial Mexico, with particular emphasis on race and the African presence in Mexico. He is the author and editor of a number of works, including Bearing Arms for His Majesty: The Free‐Colored Militia in Colonial Mexico (published in 2001), Flight: The Life of Virgil Richardson, A Tuskegee Airman in Mexico (published in 2004), Black Mexico: Race and Society from Colonial to Modern Times, co‐edited with Matthew Restall and published in 2009, and Africans to Colonial Spanish America, co‐edited with Sherwin K. Bryant and Rachel O’Toole, and published in 2012.

His most recent work, Before Mestizaje: Lobos, Moriscos, Coyotes and the Frontiers of Race and Caste in Colonial Mexico (Cambridge University Press) is the subject of episode 18 of History Hub's podcast series – ‘Kingdom, Empire and Plus Ultra: conversations on the history of Portugal and Spain, 1415-1898'.

Before Mestizaje is an examination of race and caste in colonial Mexico, and opens new dimensions on the history of these issues in Latin America by examining what Vinson refers to as ‘extreme’ caste groups in Mexico. Through examining the lives and experiences of these groups and others, the work seeks a deeper understanding between the idea of Mestizaje and the colonial caste system, by arguing that if we are to understand the concept of Mestizaje, we must understand earlier forms of racial mixture, hybridity, and elasticity that served as its precursor in the Spanish colonial world.

Kingdom, Empire and Plus Ultra: conversations on the history of Portugal and Spain, 1415-1898.

This History Hub podcast series features interviews with experts in the areas of Portuguese and Spanish history, from the beginning of the Portuguese discoveries in 1415 to the end of Spanish dominion in America in 1898. (KEPU) Ben Vinson - Mestizaje and the Frontiers of Race and Caste in Colonial Mexico

Dr. François Soyer is a Senior Lecturer in Late Medieval and Early Modern History at the University of New England (Armidale, NSW, Australia). From January 2012 until early 2016, he was a Partner Investigator with the ARC Centre of Excellence for the History of Emotions at the University of Adelaide and then an Associate Professor in Late Medieval and Early Modern History at the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom between 2015 and 2018. 

He has published a number of books and articles, including The Persecution of the Jews and Muslims of Portugal: King Manuel I and the End of Religious Tolerance (1496-7), published in 2007, Popularizing Anti-Semitism in Early Modern Spain and its Empire. Francisco de Torrejoncillo and the Centinela contra Judíos (1674), published in 2014, and most recently, Antisemitic Conspiracy Theories in the Early Modern Iberian World: Narratives of Fear and Hatred, published in 2019. 

He is currently working on the origins, development and impact of the Antisemitic Ritual Murder and Blood Libel legends in Spain, focusing especially on the Blood Libel cases of San Dominguito de Val and the Holy Child of La Guardia.
