Happy Hardcore Classics 42  'Force & Styles: The Anthems'

The 'Godfather Of Hardcore' was a key figure in the development of the happy hardcore sound and one of my favourite DJ's. In my opinion SMD#1 was the first real happy hardcore record when the genre split into two around 1993, Happy Hardcore & Jungle/Drum & Bass.  Aswell as launching labels such as Awesome Records, Universal Records & Benz Records, he also produced some of the finest anthems and remixes of mid 90's. Slipmatt is a true legend of the scene and deserves his place in the hardcore hall of fame.

A similar sound to my previous 'Go Mental' mix (39), along with DJ Kaos and DJ Magical, Stompy was the absolute master of the uplifting vocal sound. He produced some excellent original vocals and also taking classic vocals samples and giving them the ultimate happy hardcore treatment. In my opinion, very underrated as a DJ and was also behind some of the biggest ever happy hardcore anthems. A lot of love for this guy, he certainly lived up to his name!

Happy Hardcore Classics 54  'DJ Stompy: The Vocal Anthems'

The 'Lord Of Hardcore' and founder of Evolution Records, Scott Brown is one of the most important figures in the Scottish dance music scene. He was heavily involved in the rise of the hardcore techno sound from the early 1990's. His mixture of bouncy techno and gabba annihilated dancefloors across the country and influenced hardcore producers around Europe. Evolution Records is the UK's longest running and arguably the biggest ever hardcore label. It always has been incredibly popular througout the scene. The demand was so high around '94, Scott created many sublabels including Evolution Gold and specialising in the harder edged material were Twisted Vinyl and Screwdriver Records. He even released tracks on giant Dutch hardcore labels such as Dwarf & Babyboom Records, Paul Elstak's Forze Records and Bass-D & King Matthew's Inferno Records. He produced under many aliases as you can see from the tracklisting below. This mix is obviously influenced by one of my favourite ever sets, the 'Rezerection - Awakening of '95' mix and will be the first of 3 mixes devoted to his awesome back catalogue.

The legend that is Scott Brown will always be top of the hardcore tree.

Fade & Bananaman are quite possibly the most underrated producers of the mid 90's 4 beat happy hardcore scene. The quality of production when the duo got together was extremely high. Releasing massive anthems on various labels including Essential Platinum, Maverick Records, Quosh and Vinylgroovers' The World Of Obsession. Aswell as being behind the awesome Silk Cuts bootleg label (see mix 40), between '96-'98 they created some of the biggest, most memorable happy hardcore records that I certainly will never forget. The incredibly uplifting vibe underneath beautiful vocals, complete the pure happy hardcore magic!

Happy Hardcore Classics 59  'Scott Brown: The Anthems '99-'06'

The founder of Rotterdam Records and Forze Records, hardcore and gabber legend Paul Elstak delivered many classic anthems. Hugely popular vocal tracks with the added Dutch power. Elstak had earlier been one of the producers responsible for the invention of gabba, the harder-than-hard sound that dominated raves in Holland & Belgium. In 1995 he decided to switch his sound to the lighter, happier variant of hardcore found in the UK. His records would frequently get into the top 10 in various European pop charts. Apart from an infamous licensing dispuste and various UK sample rip-offs, Paul Elstak still deserves his spot in the History Of Happy Hardcore Hall Of Fame.

Happy Hardcore Classics 68  'Paul Elstak: The Anthems Pt 2'

Club Kinetic resident and Next Generation Records boss DJ Brisk has been at the forefront of the hardcore scene since the very beginning. Releasing tracks on the mighty Kniteforce, Remix Records and Stormtrooper Records, he then began to showcase his remixing skills. Brisk's take on Jimmy J & Cru-L-T's popular happy hardcore anthem 'Six Days' set the bar high. His remixing ability then took off, creating some of the greatest remixes the scene has to offer. Labels such as Happy Trax, Impact Records and Just Another Label all wanted a piece and Brisk certainly delivered. Teaming up with Trixxy he then produced one of the most memorable happy hardcore records, the massive 'Eye Opener'. 

His live DJ sets were technically brilliant. Extremely energetic with long, on point mixes, he was always a fans favourite at the major events. DJ Brisk is another legend of the happy hardcore scene and firmly secures his place in the hardcore hall of fame.

Happy Hardcore Classics 76  'DJ Brisk: The Anthems Pt 4'

Dutch happy hardcore and gabber duo Charly Lownoise & Mental Theo were established underground DJs and producers. They were one of the most popular rave acts in The Netherlands throughout the 90s. After founding Master Maximum Records in 1992, the pair created some of the scenes most recognisable hits. Their biggest success was the magical 'Wonderful Days' which peaked at no. 2 in the Dutch charts and was played at raves all over the UK. 
Charly Lownoise & Mental Theo were anthem machines across a few genres, gaining them a spot in my Hardcore Hall Of Fame. 

There were always more than one great mix on most of their releases which made this harder to put together but here it is.

Something a little different this time. A mix devoted to the incredible voice of Donna Grassie. Donna was a much sought after happy hardcore vocalist, especially with fellow South Coast legends such as Ramos, Supreme, Sunset Regime and UFO. This highly recognisable voice, both beautiful and unique, added to the quality of production, created so much emotion, bringing many happy hardcore records to life.

Happy Hardcore Classics 83  'The Voice Of Donna Grassie'

With the previous mix summing-up the amazing voice of Donna Grassie, it's only right that the next one should stay with the South Coast pioneers, Ramos, Supreme & Sunset Regime. Together they created some of the scenes biggest anthems. The RSR crew had a very distinctive sound with slick percussion, crisp hi-hats, warm vocals and heavenly pianos. We delve deep into the RSR Recordings and Supreme Music archives as well as records such as 'Sunshine', 'Phantasm', 'The Fire This Time' and 'Higher & Higher' which were all gems but arguably their greatest success was the 1995 hardcore monster 'Life Force Generator'. An extremely classy tune with wicked 'Ready To Go' vocal samples which build up to into the euphoric piano break either side of the uptempo 'Crowd Control' sample. One of the best hardcore records of all time in my opinion. 

Happy Hardcore would not have been the same without them.

Happy Hardcore Classics 84  'Ramos, Supreme & Sunset Regime: The Anthems'

DJ Vibes is up there with the scene's most popular DJs and has represented happy hardcore from day one. Everybody who has ever been to a rave, has at one time, been charged from the uplifting power of Vibes’ music and personality. 

In the studio, with Wishdokta's knack for creating slick amen breaks, hefty rolling basslines and soulful breakdowns (showing Vibes' musical roots), the pair released many records on several labels including, Impact Records, Rogue Trooper, Kniteforce, Just Another Label and his own labels Ravers Choice & Asylum Music Inc. The first record Vibes & Wishdokta made together was 'Sing It Loud' and on the flip they had their initial breakthrough hit, the massive crossover anthem, 'Obsession'. This track was played by both hardcore and jungle DJs such as Billy 'Daniel' Bunter and Grooverider. Their stunning remix of Sunshine Productions' 'Above The Clouds' is a personal favourite of mine and one my earliest memories of hardcore. Vibes adapted to the movement of the scene and when 4 beat was added to the breakbeats, the big releases kept on coming. The mighty Ravers Choice volumes 1 & 2 went toe to toe with Slipmatt's SMD guise as being the original sounds of happy hardcore. 

In a recent interview Vibes stated that he wouldn't be where he is today without Wishdokta's early production talents. 

As a DJ, Vibes knew what the crowd wanted and in my opinion was a genius at track selection. If you have never heard or seen the last track by him at the final official Helter Skelter, Millennium Jam, check it out. Amazing stuff. 

His solid, 20 year old partnership with MC Livelee is still going strong to this day and a firm favourite set with any crowd. 

I've been lucky enough to meet Vibes a couple of times, in the UK and Ibiza and all I can say is what a great guy and absolute legend of the rave scene he is!

Happy Hardcore Classics 86  'Vibes & Wishdokta: The Anthems'

Alongside the likes of Fade, Bananaman & Stompy, DJ Storm wasn't one of the 'big' hardcore names which featured at the main raves around the country but his production skills shone through, creating immensely uplifting and highly energetic happy hardcore tracks. Now known as Al Storm, he was behind some of my personal favourite remixes, including Force & Styles' 'Fireworks' and Seduction's early classic 'Sub Dub'. Storm's huge stabs, smartly chopped samples and broken beats really left their mark at the later end of the 90's, causing serious amounts of dancefloor damage.

Happy Hardcore Classics 92  'DJ Storm: The Anthems'

Quality happy hardcore producer and founder of United Dance Recordings, Eruption was behind many of the scene's muched loved anthems. Also signed to Seduction's Impact Records, his first release on the label in 1994, 'Nicey', is a personal favourite of mine and helped kick-start his exceptional back catalogue. The track is so uplifting and effective in it's simplicity and a brilliant example of the vibe at the time and the direction in which the label and hardcore itself, was heading. Eruption also teamed up with the likes of Sy, Seduction himself, Dougal, Slipmatt and even Hixxy on forthcoming releases. The impressive hits kept on coming. 'Bust A New Jam', 'Party Time', 'Let The Music' and the incredible, 'Surrender' were all extremely popular and essential with all the big hardcore DJs. Arguably his biggest and most stand out track, along with the Godfather of Hardcore, Slipmatt was their take on the 90's classic, 'Sunshine'. In my opinion, one of happy hardcore's finest pieces of work, with it's perfect concoction of pianos, stabs and exquisite resung vocals by the amazing Katherine Wood.

Jon Doe, the man behind the excellent D.H.S.S. series also wrote, produced, remixed and engineered many quality happy hardcore, breakbeat and trancecore records. He also ran labels such as Space Race Recordings, BnH and the very underrated No Trix. Jon knew exactly how to blend energetic breaks and pounding beats with acid breakdowns and euphoric melodies. Arguably his finest work was the 1998 smash 'Timebomb' with the gloriously sweet vocals of Lisa Abbott. An incredibly powerful happy hardcore record which oozes class from start to finish.

This mix takes you on a journey through the extraordinary mind of Jon Doe and in my opinion makes him one of hardcore's most prominent producers and engineers.

Oi Oi I’m Ryan. Here’s a little bio. 

I bought my first set of turntables at the age of 14 when I was already collecting Happy Hardcore records. DJing was one of those things that just come naturally to me. My friends were always over at my house for mixing sessions. At 16 I started playing alongside my brother and friends every fortnight at a local bar for an under 18’s night playing Happy Hardcore. Two years later, out of a thousand entrants my mix tape came top five in the ‘Ministry Of Sound DJ Of The Year’. I played a live vinyl set in Topshop situated in London’s Oxford Street, on a busy Saturday afternoon. I continued entering DJ competitions and talent nights along with a mid-week slot at a local bar. At 20, I was given full weekend residency at my local nightclub Steam, playing Old-Skool, House and Trance. In the next two years I reached the final of the ‘Young DJ Of The Year’ competitions, which were run by the Staffordshire & Cheshire’s number one radio station, Signal 1. I came out as overall winner of the competition in 2002. My prize was my first ever pair of Technics 1210’s (which I still use), mixer, flight cases and the opportunity to play a live set at Café Mambo in Ibiza. The win also landed me a set at the opening night of the Stoke club, Lomax, for the ‘Youth Upfront Awards’. I then tried to further my career by signing onto the internet DJ agencies, 'Topjox' and 'Club Dreams', sending out demos to gain recognition. In the early summer of 2004 I decide to try my luck by booking a one way ticket to Ibiza for the season. It was tough at first, but by the end of July I had a residency at the brilliant Plastik Lounge in San Antonio. After a few weeks playing with some of San An’s finest house DJ’s, I was given the chance to warm up the decks in Es Paradis funky lounge. But best of all, after weeks of trying, Alex Ellenger, who with Judge Jules ran the funky room in Eden, give me the finest two hours of my DJ career by asking me to play a set. The next year I returned to Ibiza and became one of the residents in the swanky new Hush bar in San Antonio's west end. When I came back to England I started my own night in a local bar. I then became one of the Tech-House/Hard House residents for my brother's local club night ‘Euphonic Fuzion’. 

Even though I enjoy playing many styles of dance music, I've never lost my passion for Happy Hardcore. It will forever be the biggest part of me musically and that's why I created this page. To share the love for this incredible music.
