She knew a thing or two about suffering; in fact she could probably write a whole book about it. All the cliches had been thrown her way: 'every cloud has a silver lining', 'what doesn't kill you makes you stronger', 'when one door closes, another door opens' and so on... She'd learnt to smile and nod, rather than retort with sarcasm. That said, with each strike or set back there had always been an evaluation, a lesson or a coping mechanism she'd take away and apply to the next situation.

As a way of connecting cities and artists during lockdown, Offenbach's Live At Robert Johnson and Leipzig’s Riotvan have joined forces for a new collaborative release, 'PLAYRVN001'. Made up of five tracks that link up two artists, the EP gives us a window into the sonic foundations of each imprint and the synergy between them both. Collaborations come from Roman Flügel & Rebolledo, Jennifer Touch & Chinaski, New Hook and Perel, Fort Romeau & Panthera Krause and Horkheimer & Peter Invasion & Gregor Habicht, spanning everything from synth pop to cosmic disco, breakbeat and Italo.

The new release by Fabio Me Llaman Soltero and Don Ipanema Boi on the promising label Richmerch is what we would call “batidão” in Brazil, something like “strong beat”, in a free translation, and it could easily be played during a Baile Funk in Rio de Janeiro due to the strong influence of the spicy and vibrant Funk Carioca in it. “Guatemalan Brigadeiro” has Brazilian influence in its title as well: “Brigadeiro” is a nationwide beloved dessert that can be defined as a bonbon “between a fudgy chocolate truffle and a Tootsie Roll”.

Fun fact: Brigadeiro is Fabio’s favourite dessert, and reportedly, Don Ipanema’s girlfriend prepares the best brigadeiro in the world, because of this the song was named like that. “We wanted to make a simple and non-serious idea with a good and aggressive rhythm that could express the Brazilian and Guatemalan cultures using elements from both countries”, according to Fabio.

Another fun fact: “Fabio Me Llaman Soltero is a character conceptualized by my strong Latin boyband influences that I had when I was a kid, actually I personally met one of the greatest boybands in history: Magneto (Mx). This happened because my mom was a really good friend of the mom of one of the Magneto members. So, Fabio is a rare hybrid between Julio Iglesias, Flavio Cesar, Kairo & Magneto (all Latin pop legends) and he loves a good suntan, yachts and beautiful chicas. My music is inspired in that lifestyle”, said Fabio.

Don Ipanema Boi is Fabio’s brother (real one) and his character comes from his obsession for the Brazilian culture (his girlfriend – the-best-brigadeiro-in-the-world girl – is from São Paulo, by the way). That’s why his music – both DJ sets and productions – has a strong Brazilian feeling.

“Guatemalan Brigadeiro” recipe: Lasers from old game consoles currently used in shitty arcades in abandoned spots in the historic district in Guatemala City, throbbing and striking basslines and vocals from Brazil.

Canada’s ALI X (formally Azari & iii) and Mexico’s XIMENA are releasing their self-titled, debut album project. Set for release this July via their own label ‘CONTROLLA’, tracks from the album are receiving remixes from a selection of well-respected artists, as is the case here with Timothy Clerkin's remix of "No Me Gustas."

After many failed attempts at writing the press release for such an ambiguous project, it's the artists themselves that introduce the album… 

“ALI X (ex Azari & III) and XIMENA (Controlla.Mx) are a powerhouse duo whose risky Spanglish techno-rap out of Mexico City cuts raw, rugged barrio street juice with laser sharp cultural rhetoric, radiated by a dominant visual element unique to their assay. Their Spring 2020, self-titled debut album is a bricolage of radical freak poetics and hyper-focused observations, entangled in a dusky jungle of dank, chunky production and abstracted aural art pieces. With deep-referencing and inspiration from Luis Miguel to Plastikman, Jean-Paul Sartre to John Paul Jones, these two rap-junkie technoid punks poke fun at the contemporary cultural milieu with a deadpan seriousness you can never quite read for sure...

Premiere: ALI X x XIMENA "No Me Gustas" (Timothy Clerkin Remix) - Controlla

The Hivern split series was born as a platform for club-ready tracks that don’t require a broader sonic context to express themselves. It’s also as a way of generating an unplanned dialogue between artists in the label’s orbit, connecting the dots amid them in spontaneous and almost unconscious ways. The third instalment of the series brings together Beesmunt Soundsystem and Cooper Saver. Their two tracks share a similar approach, deconstructing ethereal sounds over dark rhythmic foundations to reach the same kind of narcotic transcendence. The visual concept of the series has been developed by London-based design studio DR.ME
