“Days On End” serves as a sonic archive of mid-pandemic moods. Through a collection of live-recorded tracks, it captures a raw, creative burst from Solotape during a period of stripped-down production. Signature rhythm-work and gritty sound design return for this extensive collection, released in two parts.

“I was kind of burnt out on music early during the pandemic - everyone at my house was suddenly home all the time and I never had any alone time to work on it. Eventually, I ended up renting a shared rehearsal spot nearby in San Francisco. My audio interface was still at home when I first moved in there, so I didn't have a way to digitally record. I brought my tape deck instead and pressed record when things started sounding good.”

“My whole setup was pretty basic with less instruments than I usually have. There was a sort of simplicity to making stuff that I think was good for me. I was just excited to work on music again, and wasn’t obsessing over the technicalities. I didn’t have any particular plans for what I was recording, and just set the tapes aside for a while. I had forgotten most of what I had recorded by the time I returned to them months later. I didn’t know what to expect once I listened back and essentially rediscovered all of the material like it was new. The tapes felt like a physical little time capsule of an earlier period. After I realized that I liked what I had made, I dubbed the tapes to digital and made some edits to clean them up. Almost everything from the three tapes is included here.”

Despite this simplified approach (or perhaps because of it), Solotape has created a body of work that is full of excitement, joy, and playfulness, as well as frustration, catharsis, and dread. At times rambling, at others immediate and visceral, it resembles a series of vignettes, tied together through a common tonal palette and form rather than emotional valence. “Days On End” strikes a balance of raw emotion and analog textures, providing an honest snapshot into the artist's internal world.

L+P-2 is Rivet's second album following his acclaimed debut, On Feather and Wire, released on Editions Mego in 2020. The wheels were already in motion for a subsequent album on the same label, but tragedy struck. Peter "Pita" Rehberg, the legendary owner of Editions Mego, suddenly passed away at only 53 years old, leaving the experimental electronic music community in a state of pitch-black grief. Rivet was among the many deeply affected by this loss. The inspiration and support from Rehberg had propelled Rivet to create at a level he himself was uncertain he had mastered. For Rivet, Rehberg's death felt like the death of music.

However, that brooding sentiment was abruptly shattered when Rivet's beloved dog and companion, Lilo, was diagnosed with incurable cancer just a couple of months later. They were inseparable, and now they would be separated nonetheless. The only way Rivet could cope with this double blow was to compose—for Lilo, for Pita, for his own sanity. L+P-2 is the result.

While the album naturally emerges from a place of despair, it's remarkably comforting. Partly, this stems from Rivet's singular ability to make machines not only sound human but also act human—sincere and warm, yet flawed. In more than one track on L+P-2, you'll encounter a distinctive melody and a gnarly bassline dancing hand in hand with Rivet's eccentric and captivating drum patterns. Then, seemingly on a whim, the melody takes off on its own, leaving the faithful bassline behind—much like a dear friend that suddenly vanishes from your life without warning. Yet life goes on, and so does the music. But never unchanged. Never.

L+P-2 is an album of lamentation, yet also of resolve—a dedication to those who go through life losing more than their share because they always carry too much.

Back in the early 90's myself (Jeff Waye) and Linus Booth had started a record label, Discreet/Indiscreet Records. To launch one our releases by David Kristian we decided we needed one of our favourite groups Panasonic to come headline. With zero idea of how to throw an event or say what work papers were we somehow got two Finns and a bunch of gear over the border and set up at a closed down rap club (which fortunately hadn't had the PA stripped out). The power of being naive made for a great show (as did the ex rap promoter / club owner who proved invaluable with the border problem hustle). Afterwards went back to our place and listened to dub records with Mika, Ilpo, and Tommi Grunlond until sun came up and followed Pan Sonic right through their career from that point. Upon learning of Mika Vainio's passing and the ensuing nostalgia I remembered I had a DAT tape of that night. So here it is... Panasonic's set from that night in all its glory.

Completist edit... a reliable source says this is 1996 and not 1995 despite me remembering this being organized around the Clubfoot EP release in '95. I mean it's not impossible it took us a year to organize a launch party...
