This week in The Armory we are absolutely thrilled to be featuring two of America’s finest purveyors of the broken beat, Chicago’s Keith MacKenzie and Orlando’s DJ Fixx. It’s about to get filthy up in here! Press play. Get down. 

Illeven:Eleven Recordings’ label boss Keith MacKenzie's contributions to the breakbeat scene cannot be overstated. After honing his skills as a DJ in the 90's Florida scene alongside luminaries like DJ Icey, DJ Fixx and Infiniti, Keith's move into the label game sought to combine his various influences under one roof. Although the primary focus has been bass-driven breaks music, the label built a reputation for releasing quality collaborations from artists working across electronic genres, quickly making it a Beatport favorite. 

Besides his own productions with DJ Fixx (as KMFX), the ever-growing list of releases have included music from producers like Calvertron, Deekline & Ed Solo, Hatiras, Bass Kleph and Gigi Barocco, as well as frequent vocal contributions by the likes of Sporty-O, Sue Cho and Whiskey Pete.  In addition to gigging extensively in North America, the last few years have seen Keith's profile boosted to international breakbeat fame. Over the last year alone, Keith has smashed dancefloors in Spain, Russia, Rome, and London, constantly pushing his potent formula of party-rocking breaks to new heights.

Over the past 15 years, breakbeat pioneer DJ Fixx has been stocking the shelves of record stores everywhere. Said by many as one of the most innovative and consistent producers in the industry, he continues to deliver some of the most sought after breakbeat tracks available. Making his debut in 1998, Fixx produced over 75 anthems on the classic Kaleidoscope Music label. Many of these timeless tracks are still played frequently today. This was then followed by Fixx's own personal imprint, Bottom-End Records (2004-2008). Managed by Afterdark, the BER trademark produced some of the biggest anthems in the industry, easily claiming the spot of one of the top five best-selling domestic labels in the country. Alongside of Keith MacKenzie, Fixx is currently a leading producer for Keith's illeven:eleven label. Frequent solo installments can be found on ILL, as well as collaborations with Keith under the production duo 'KMFX'. With over 150 12-inch releases, over 200 exclusive digital releases, and eight massively-distributed CDs under his belt, Fixx has assembled one impressive Discography. All of this resulting in one of the strongest and most loyal followings in the industry

FunkTasty Crew #012 - Phat Kidz Guest Mix

Keith MacKenzie has emerged as one of the driving forces behind the global breakbeat scene, regularly gigging across the US and Europe. Now based in Chicago, Keith spent his formative years in the now legendary Florida rave scene racking up early credits on influential labels like DJ Icey's Zone Records and After Dark before launching his own label. Illeven:Eleven Recordings, now in its 11th year of operations, built a reputation for releasing quality collaborations from a diverse roster of artists (Audiostalkers, Deekline & Ed Solo, Fixx, Infiniti, Bass Kleph, Gigi Barocco, Rico Tubbs, Sporty-O, Sue Cho and Whiskey Pete have all released on the label) making it a Beatport mainstay in the process. Under the informal moniker of KMFX alongside Fixx he's gone on to release internationally on labels like Deekline's Rat Records, as well as Punks, the venerable UK imprint formed by breakbeat stalwarts Stanton Warriors.

In 2012 Keith teamed up with long time creative collaborators Fixx and D:RC to form Smookie Illson, a new bass music alias for studio experiments that fall outside the rather strict umbrella of breakbeat music. After trying their hand at everything from electro house to moombahton (signing their first demos to Potty Mouth Music in the process) they found their footing in the EDM "trap" scene, churning out bootlegs and originals at a brisk pace and gaining steady support from fans and peers alike. Their 2013 bootleg remix of Yo Majesty's 'Club Action' turned into one of the longest-running festival season selections, gaining support year after year from scene favorites like Skrillex & Diplo, Baauer, RL Grime, Brillz, and Loudpvck. 2015 saw Smookie Illson releasing their 'Compound Riddims EP' a highly-rated collab with the UK's Ragga Twins on Play Me Records, as well as releases on Seattle's Simplify Records and Australia's Safari Music.

Dr. Fresch - House Call 013: Aaron Jackson Guest Mix

With a project that has been months in the making, DJ Ark returns with his first full length mix since last appearing on The Armory Podcast to close out 2014. Ark has been very busy since and has come back to the show fully loaded with a very large arsenal of his own edits and mash ups. These tracks have gained quite the support from the largest names in the breakbeat industry in recent months. DJ Icey has been their biggest advocate and many of these tracks have become a staple in his sets. They have gotten an amazing crowd response in every city that they have been played in. But they have also been played by the likes of Krafty Kuts, Baby Anne, Keith Mackenzie, Marten Horger, Deekline, Agent K & Bella, & DJ Hero all across the world. They have appeared on Automatic Static, The Smashcast and the latest KMFX illeven eleven mixtape among many others. 

  Now it's time for Ark to take the decks himself. This guest mix features 14 of his own edits and is also loaded with exclusive material from start to finish from the likes of DJ Icey and Krafty Kuts. Quite a few of these tracks are premiering for the first time ever outside of a live setting.   

DJ Ark hails from Tampa, FL and is signed to Zone Records & illeven eleven. Ark has been a consistent presence within the Florida breaks scene for some time. This year brought the amazing opportunity to collaborate with the legendary DJ Icey on two original singles for Zone. Both of those singles “The Come Up” and “Empire” reached the top 5 of Beatport Breaks. In the past his remixes & rerubs have also gotten played worldwide on Sirius & BBC Radio with major support by the likes of DJ Icey, Krafty Kuts, Stanton Warriors, Keith Mackenzie, Baby Anne, Marten Horger, DJ Hero & Lady Waks. Since starting this journey which began long ago on internet radio, he has brought the bass to nearly every club in his hometown and been blessed with the opportunity to travel to cities like Chicago, Miami, Charleston & Charlotte.

Influenced highly by the works of Icey, Ark is constantly on the lookout throughout all genres of electronic music for the best tracks to add more bounce to. DJ Arks passion for music runs extremely deep and it’s that passion that has always allowed him to be ahead of the game. His obsessive dedication to keep with the times really shows in his productions and live sets. Never one to let a big track pass him by, you really are in for a show when he's on the decks. His greatest love is to bring the energy to the dance floor and take crowds on a journey. He is known to have a great stage presence and is usually dancing, smiling and singing right along with you. With this ability, DJ Arks wide range of diversity and live only exclusives has consistently proven to work on even the toughest of critics. "We're super perfectionists with our mixes, and really wanted to create an experience, a roller coaster of emotions through out the 1-hour mix. It starts around 100BPM to get you dancing and builds in energy to 104... Then halfway through it drops to 75 to give you a break and hit you with some half time, feel good jams. From there, it builds all the way to the epic finish at 120BPM. We have a lot of our own music in here but this mix has a lot of influences- - a lot of Litefeet from New York, hyphy from the Bay, some New Orleans bounce, Chicago bop music, and LA beat scene. We also incorporated various forms of bass music and trap but did it in our own way. That stuff is typically a lot slower so we sometimes sped em up 30-40 BPM, or pitched it up, or mashed it up with a rap a cappella, making it sound like a totally different song, even a new genre." -- Casper & B.
