Exclusive: Dwaalgast feat. Shari Klein - Dwaal (Nuno Dos Santos Remix)

Dwaalgast and Shari Klein released their collaborative work, Pad, shortly before summer. Now their EP gets the 'dwalen' treatment and is provided with four remixes from artists such as Luna Ludmila,  Patrice Baumel, Luca dell'Orso and Something Happening Somewhere label-head Nuno Dos Santos. The latter reworks Dwaal into a dreamy House groover that hits the zeitgeist as the beforementioned – still not defined as a sub-genre – musical direction seems to come close to classic House music produced in the 90s. However, Nuno Dos Santos' approach is not 'another' production that tries to copy this era of music but is rather a smooth piece that vibes in this dreaminess and rawness that partly takes one back to a time when NYC was synonymous for this kind of sound – just that the Dutch spoken vocals from Shari Klein remind one of the present.

Having become one of Crosstown Rebels’ key artists in recent years, Barcelona-born Tibi Dabo returns to the label this February with his latest EP, the four track Isla. Since debuting on the label in 2019, Tibi Dabo (AKA Max Guardans) has cemented his place amongst the Crosstown family with standout EPs such as Disbelieve and The Distance We Share, the latter of which featuring two remixes from David Morales.

Sharing his thoughts on Isla, Tibi Dabo asks “What to do with our time on earth? Find an island of joy and comfort, a modest retreat. A place to stay sane... I was feeling quite empty during our months of isolation, no influences and no external inputs. Then this idea of creating a conceptual island came to existence, an entity where I could play and put contrasting influences of electronic music together in one place. My little island was born, a space I feel as an optimistic outlook towards the future, something that I find hard to achieve.”

Tibi Dabo creates this scene perfectly as the title track opens proceedings, easing the listener in with delicate pads before waves of harmonious elements and finely placed percussions dance in and out of the track. Mothball then further emphasises the artist’s attention to detail as its lead melody and vocal-chops develop in tandem throughout. Brain The Cut follows, acting as a metaphorical signal of nightfall on Tibi Dabo’s conceptual island. Rounding off the release, Arp 8 delivers warming melodies atop of a subtle break beat in an exquisitely emotive manner.

Still in its infancy, yet mature in its intention, the Tibi Dabo project sees Max in his element; drawing on over a decade of playing and making music, perfectly demonstrated on Isla. Emerging from a new generation of multi-disciplined artists, Tibi Dabo’s refreshingly unique sound has also seen him remix for Crosstown Rebels head Damian Lazarus on two occasions. Determined and full of creative energy, Tibi Dabo thrives on producing music with no restrictions and, driven by his own need for exploration together with the support of influential industry figureheads, he has a locker full of fresh new music to unleash.

It’s time now for Jimi Jules’ second installment of exclusives from his recent Watergate Mix compilation and this one is heavily focused on Jules’ collaborations, remixes and edits. Starting off with his collaboration with Jules & Jesaya +4 BPM edit of heavyweights Âme’s 119 BPM, where hefty, pumping low end and slick, rigorous hats set the pace for a brutal but sexy bassline guaranteed to demolish any dance floor at any moment. Jimi Jules & Domenico Ferrari’s ‘Parkuhr’ follows up with a focus on slick, low slung minimalism as a seemingly simple groove is highlighted with playful vocals, wobbly sonic effects and a real life conversation interjected as the break. 

Changing gears, Jules takes a dive into the past on his remix of Egopusher’s ‘Flake’ where cinematic storytelling and flickers of Italo Disco seem to blend seamlessly creating a timeless composition that will shine for an eternity to come. For the final cut of the EP, Jimi takes us back to a place we seem to know him best on his remix of Ed Ed & Petja Virikko’s 'Sundroina feat Jinadu’ where he creates wildly sexy cuts with his signature organic percussion palette, lavish keys and starry eyed vocals.

'As Connected arrives at its 3rd year of existence, the team have decided to put together a compilation of tracks old and new that showcases its musical diversity.

On this sampler are brand new remixes from Olaf Stuut, Tim Engelhardt, Stefano Ritteri, Reboot and Moscoman, and they will be released on vinyl alongside a brand new track from label heads Stereo MC’s, plus the first appearance on vinyl of classic connected release ‘Lust’ by Tigerskin K.E.E.N.E and Elli (David Mayer Remix). The full compilation, meanwhile, features catalogue cuts by David Mayer, Re.You, Nandu, Florian Busse, Aaaron, Floyd Lavine and Pôngo amongst others.

Frank Heinrich aka Reboot delivers a remix in typical and well-known manner. Groove, groove and again groove, a lot of love for drum arrangements, plus a bit of weird modulation on the vocal make up this great remix. This piece doesn't have a loud eccentric nature but grabs your attention over time and is not going to leave you until it's over.

This vital contemporary label has been building steam over the last few years with increasing vigour, and this release follows their ethic of offering a diverse and underground mix of tracks that offer plenty of club action.'

Loot Recordings kicks off their 2020 by introducing a fast rising new talent, Ayala, backed with remixes from Quatri and Rancido. Ayala debuted with a fine EP on MoBlack in 2019 and showed off his knack for peaceful grooves, blissful music and a careful mix of ethnic atmospheres, jazz, disco and pure four-four rhythms. He opens this EP with the tribal beats of 'Ecoute,' a busy, jostling track that makes you shake your limbs as the toms, shakers and rubbery kicks all bring real looseness. When the spiritual synths arrive, you're transported to an African plain and lost in the moment. The more driving Quatri remix is warm, chord-laced deep house for cosy backroom dancing that is another fine offering from the Frenchman who is a master of melody. The excellent 'Primal' is a more cosmic tune with twinkling keys up top and crisp drum work down below. Earthy and organic, it has a very human feel with plenty of thoughtful pads that make a lasting impact. With releases on labels like Innervisions and Connaisseur Recordings, Rancido has showcased his modern organic techno many times before and here does so again with an absorbing late night mix that is perfectly heady and finished with delightfully delicate pads. This is a strong EP from a talent very much worth keeping an eye out for in 2020.

Manumasi is just one of the several feathers in Mark Slee’s cap. As co-founder, he produced its debut release four years ago. The San Franciscan label now presents more "deep and mysterious” sounds! Radiating both adjectives, “Grapeseed” features three originals and as many remixes. The last of the former, “Bitter Flower,” pivots on a large groove. Adding further depth, vintage organ and acid lines fill out the mix.
