We’re beyond excited to share a special mixtape with you from @hoavi (aka Kirill Vasin), a St Petersburg-based producer and DJ who has been an integral part of the underground scene for over a decade.

Hoavi’s journey began in the early 2010s when he founded his label, Shells Rattle, and he has since released music on labels such as floe, Snare Tapes, Peak Oil, Fauxpas, Minor Notes and ГОСТ ЗВУК. Beyond his solo work, Hoavi has collaborated with artists like Oomkah Dee, contributing to the "Collage" series, which blends sound art with contemporary dance. We've first got acquainted with his ambient side thanks to the album "Music for Six Rooms" which we also invite you to revisit. We were so taken by it at the time that we reached out to him to add one more gem to our collection.

The mix he recorded for us is a beautiful blend of genres and emotions, with ambient tracks, dubby sounds and abstract beats – a journey through soundscapes and experimental vibes. It’s not pure ambient, but the sound flows so naturally that it felt like the perfect fit for our series.

Ten years of anything in the music world is an achievement, especially with the surfeit of choice and fatiguing overload of our digital attention spans. Blink and you’ll miss it announcements swallowed up by the algorithm, incessant PR mail-outs and Bandcamp/Soundcloud feed uploads all struggling to compete. Labels like GOST ZVUK show the merit in quietly doing your thing. For the last decade they have been working with an ever-expanding group of core producers and, importantly, friends to showcase a modern world of collaborators informed by the roots of styles as diverse as hip-hop, ambient, nostalgic library sounds and classic dance music.

What they present in celebration of this landmark is a 4xLP compilation which unfolds across a thrillingly disorientating, attentive and sonically psychedelic 120 minutes. The variety of the collection draws from far and wide, from the decaying choral vocals and cinematic string timbres of Batsqueak’s ‘fm2shelter’ to the kosmiche droning synthesisers of Moscow duo S A D or Hoavi’s frantic, scattered poly-rhythms. Refined, complex sound design awash with field recordings and the storytelling of Sasha Hilko on Ilya Vlasenko’s impressive ‘untitled’ contrasts with playful rhythm-box R&B loops courtesy of DX20V. Lengthy jazz-funk stylings from Piramyds of Ural flow into phaser-heavy cosmic space rock from Atal, loose, sun-kissed dub experiments brush shoulders with Mills-esque ambient techno loops. Label regulars such as Oleg Buyanov (OL), Nocow and Lapti appear amongst a vast array of newcomers from the Russian underground, all finding their place in the compilation.

The sequencing work of label owners Ildar Zaynetdinov and Flaty threads a narrative for each vinyl side, carefully chosen with the medium in mind. Transitions between the likes of Stas Karpenkov’s ‘WORLD’ and ‘Material Fatigue’ by Gamayun or the timbre and mood shared on Ясень’s ‘Уходишь Ты’ and Kedr Livanskiy’s ‘Trees in the Shadow’, the latter a spectral pop ballad drowned in reverb, show the attention to detail and care put into the project. You could land at any point in the collection and draw parallels, though, regardless of order.

There is an overarching identity now running through the label's evolution, from the house and techno beginnings to the more abstract forms of later LP releases and now all tied together with this celebration of a decade in the game. In a way, genre and form are disregarded for a sense of collective feeling.

FORT label, founded by Alexey Nikitin, better known as Nocow,
presents its debut release — a full-length album of 15
compositions. In this work, Alexey continues to explore the
voice as a key musical instrument, delving deeper into
experimental electronics and revealing new facets of his
creativity.

The album is a fabric of narratives. Sensual melodies intertwine
with vivid vocal parts and subtle percussive lines. The
compositions immerse the listener in a world where the spirit of
Nocow's forest comes alive, and the sandy shore becomes an
allegory for timeless music. The cry of seagulls — a beloved
sound from Alexey's childhood — permeates the album, harking
back to the simplicity and naivety of youth.

The release's cover art reflects its essence — a journey to
oneself, where a star in the sky and a wave in the sea become
symbols of the music's eternity. This album is a dynamic call to
move in sync with emotions, inspired by the author's personal
history and nature.

Renowned L.A. multi-tasker Brian Foote aka Leech issues two divergent sides via beloved Southern California party institution / tape label, Far Away: Live At Far Away #5 / Just The Liquid. The A is a 30-minute board recording of a summer hardware set at a nascent Far Away celebration alongside Avalon Emerson, Cosmo Vitelli, and Emotion II Emotion in a dimly lit warehouse. Fourth world acid, MKS-50 Hoover stabs, and heavily swung 909 rhythms congeal and collapse across loose, intuitive improvisations.

On the flip Foote collages a vaporous half-hour mix of atmospheric vignettes and ambient mirage sourced primarily from golden era Good Looking and Moving Shadow vinyl EPs.
