Murky memories of house music, electro, techno, dub and ambient are all hewn together in Suedo's unique manner, leaning very much towards the leftfield, both on and off the dance floor.

A2 track Focus is a brilliant collaboration with Edinburgh's George T (Accident Machine, George Demure etc), half-spoken, gently absorbed into the current - not foregrounded, but drifting like vapour through the mix.

Together, they shape a sonic space that lingers in tension — half-thought, half-felt, never fully resolved.

Hot on the heels of the much loved 6th Leonidas & Hobbes “Together” EP (May ‘25), Leonidas returns this Halloween, with his long awaited second solo EP, “Flying Saucers”, since debuting in 2012 with Sequential EP (via Kay Suzuki’s Round In Motion label).

As the name suggests, Flying Saucers is an exploration into cosmic dancing, delving into some of Leonidas’ favourite extra-terrestrial, interstellar and sci-fi themes, without ever losing his focus on the dancefloor. 

The opening/title track is a 10 minute epic deep house journey, inspired by the below Jacques Vallée quote (see below) made famous by Terence McKenna (at a 1987 UFO conference). This is perfectly complemented by Oumuamua, another cosmic collaboration with good friend and collaborator Kay Suzuki, which can perhaps best be described as ‘Drexciya stuck in a lift with Manuel Gottsching’ (RIP) - the latter having given the pair praise for their seminal track, Interstellar Vibrations, in 2012.

Side B kicks off with the minimal/acid house/slow ‘footwerk’ track, Spectral Portal, a funky 303/606/Juno 60 workout, followed by Nommo, an afrobeat influenced Balearic house number, inspired by tales of alien ancestral spirits from the mythology of the Dogon people of Mali, West Africa. The EP rounds off with Submarine 606 (the title is a play on 60s Japanese manga series Submarine 707), an electronic future-jazz number that defies categorisation.

In his own words, something with “A completely unique texture.” Clearly rooted in a history of rigid 4 / 4s, Kiji’s music here takes those influences and tropes somewhere a little different. Try to imagine Detroit beatdown fed through dub techno’s filters, or if The Indelible MCs / Company Flow had turned their hand to house. Drums thud, funky, loose, and kinda outta sync. Their bumpy, broken groove a bit like a hypnotic Theo Parrish production, though more a muted crashing and colliding. An offbeat, but powerful pulse. Bulbous bass-lines emit a Basic Channel-esque boom, and teasing acid twists. Buried in the mix are fragments, suggestions, of familiar classics, but these details, snippets, are submerged, blurred, smudged into a warm, fuzzy, fog. INTRO:

Now in its eleventh year and following hype for recent releases from Osaka's Kiji Suedo (Hosek EP & Riot album) and Edinburgh's George T (Roll On, King's Cross single), Edinburgh's Hobbes Music label burrows deeper into experimental ambient terrain with brand new signing Galun. With a discography over 15 years deep, Galun brings no shortage of his own props. 

Galun is the solo project of Moscow musician, artist, and producer Sergei Galunenko (currently based in Tallinn), who has performed at numerous prestigious Russian events and collaborated on projects internationally in a career spanning more than 15 years, with a discography to match, turning his attention to myriad styles: IDM, funk, techno, juke, post rock, beatboxing, free improvisation, drone.   

“In my project, Galun, I do not use musical instruments,” he explains. “All the sounds are produced with only the use of my voice through beatbox and special vocal skills.  Some effects are used to produce electronic sounds.” [NB Lately, Sergei has also been experimenting with synthesiser sounds and this album contains two electronic tracks - see below].

Hot on the heels of the new Golos album (out imminently via Berlin's One Instrument) plus a remix for US collaborator Alek Finn via Nevada's Mystery Circles label, Galunenko’s eighth studio album, Glagol (or Glagolь / Глаголь in Russian) is an ambient collection, recorded between 2013 and 2022.  The title is an old Russian word which translates as ‘Speak’.

"This album consists of tracks written in different periods, so it turned out to be diverse," he says.  "There are classic ambient tracks, as well as experimental ones in search of new possibilities for voice processing."

Why "glagol"? “Since the music on this album is 90 percent processed voice, it's a form of conversation for me," he reveals, “where I talk about my thoughts and mood, so speak music, while using my voice, is an amazing way of expressing.”

Five singles will be released on streaming platforms only, at intervals, over summer (starting 23.6.23), with the full album released on limited edition cassette, a series of three lathe cut EPs and digital, 25.8.23.

“Came about by chance. I recorded a house track using my old recordings, and a good sample was chosen that combined harmony and bass. I placed this piece in the middle of the house composition, before the climax, and then began to play with the slowdown of the whole track with granular processing. It turned out that this sample sounded like a separate composition.”

“I invited Alek Fin to record our second joint material. Usually I send my sketches, and he chooses what he likes and continues to refine them. So a little material was recorded, but we could not release it, and decided to disassemble it by compositions into our albums.”

"The first track on the EP is a groove that evolved out of messing about with a bass guitar and drum loops. It had a steady groove that just reminded me of an old friend, Gerry, who I came to know when I worked in the Back Bar of Laverys in Belfast during my university days. 

If you went to the Back Bar in the 90s or early 00s, you’d see Gerry. He was always there, without fail, from 9pm onwards - never too excited, just steady - with a beer in hand and usually smoking something (before smoking was banned!). He was always in tune and sitting tight in the groove. If ever someone was cool, it was Gerry. My uncle called him and his mate Larry the two pillars as they seemed to keep the roof up."
