This summer, Monochrome is offering each week to one or several artists to discover their influences and inspirations through a forty-five minute to two hour recording. These thirteen recordings will focus on Ambient, IDM and Dub-Techno.

Morphing Territories' (@morphingterritories) music explores the delicate balance between power and emotion. Its timeless approach to techno is based on the hypnotic, unpredictable atmospheres of modular synthesis and field recording. Inspired by the nature of his native Switzerland, as well as the music of pioneers like Mike Parker, Morphing Territories is on a boundless quest to perfect the beat. Through tireless improvisation and introverted self-discovery, his finely-sculpted sound constructs push the boundaries of both complexity and simplicity. As an extension of his musical vision, Morphing Territories’ self-titled label presents a full range of psychedelic dancefloor experiences. His own releases there, as well as for labels like KCZ (@benkaczor) and Oslated (@oslated), channel spontaneity and even chaos into purist, deeply-affecting techno trips. The vibe he creates in the studio is developed further by his journeying DJ or live sets, as well as by his mix series Sense (@esnes). Altogether, the distinct avenues create a complete sound world, where the relentless beat of a drum, the trails of driving rhythms and the warmth of soaring pads combine into a potent formula.

HOCast #75 - Morphing Territories

An opportunity to glimpse into the home-listening playbook of an artist is always an intriguing premise for a podcast. It is a chance to build depth and create context for the music that is produced by the artist, as well as what is generally chosen to penetrate the club walls.
 
For Inchmix074, Belgian artist @emily_jeanne has compiled an eclectic selection of tracks, meticulously crafted to slowly unfold over 100 minutes.

For the first quarter of the mix, the ears are welcomed with crunchy, broken sound design paired with the metallic pinball of IDM compositions. The mix progresses into downtempo percussive numbers before breaking into a proper gallop with DnB, 170 & Grey-Area Techno. Putting on the breaks, Emily works her way back to the obscure corners of contemporary ambient and post-club music before bringing the mix to a gentle conclusion; a mix which continues to surprise after successive listens.

Jacob Long has been crafting Earthen Sea material since the early 2000s. He gradually graduated from limited-edition cassettes to releases on Ital's Lover's Rock and Nicolas Jaar's Other People imprints, before linking up with the evergreen label Kranky in 2017. His third album for Kranky, Ghost Poems, comes out next week. We celebrate with an hour of music built as spring emerges around him in Brooklyn, full of contrasts between light and decay.

"As a devotee of nature, I explore sounds creating a mellow amalgam of layers using over-reverberated synths, field recordings, and self-created samples. Not choosing the club-oriented way as a first calling, instead, my productions search for other depths, in which the listener can get lost while getting submerged by heavy-grained noises and evocative instrumental compositions."

Celestial Trax returns with new work of tonal-textural explorations.
On 'Lifecodes' the producer born Joni Judén weaves together a dense quilt of sound, shimmering and surging as it unfolds in free-time. Judén invites the listener down a luminous, harmonically adventurous path, where sound takes creaturely dimensions. The songs blossom and wilt, at times floating in states of ambivalence, at others washing over the listener like waves, bathing them in heavy light.

'Lifecodes' was created in the small village of Pynnölä, Joutsa in central Finland, where Celestial Trax has been living and working since 2020.
