Wer bist Du wenn Du malst, Yann?

In dieser Folge 'apropos' bekommt ihr einen Briefwechsel zwischen dem Künstler Yann Freichels und IKOB-Direktor Frank-Thorsten Moll zu hören. Es geht um die Malerei an sich: wie sie sich anfühlt, was sie mit der Zeit macht, ihre Beziehung zum Körper und zum Kopf. Außerdem: Musik und das Mythos des Malergenies. Wie gewohnt mit musikalischen Einlagen inspiriert vom Inhalt des Gesprächs.

Yann Freichels ist einer der vielversprechendsten jungen Talente aus Ostbelgien, der mit dem Blick eines Malers auf die Gegenwart schaut und sich dabei der Malweisen seiner Vorgänger:innen bedient. Ironisch und mit viel Sprachwitz seziert er die deutsche Malereigeschichte des frühen 20. Jahrhunderts.

YANN FREICHELS (*1996) lebt und arbeitet in Grüfflingen, Belgien. Er schloß 2020 seine Ausbildung in Malerei an der « École supérieure des arts de la ville de Liège » (ESAVL) ab. Seine Werke wurden in Einzelausstellungen in La Comète (Espace 251 Nord) in Lüttich, Belgien, der Saarländischen Galerie in Berlin, Deutschland, und der KABK in Oudenaarde, Belgien präsentiert. Unter seinen Gruppenausstellungen zählen "Yann Freichels & Jean-Baptiste Vandevelde" in Gevaertsdreef 01, Oudenaarde, Belgien, "Prix Collignon" im La Châtaigneraie Centre Wallon d’art contemporain, Flémalle, Belgien, und "Private views" kuratiert von Yves Randaxhe in La Boverie, Liège, Belgien. Seine Arbeiten sind auch in öffentlichen Sammlungen vertreten, darunter die Collection de la communauté germanophone de Belgique und die Collection artistique de la province de Liège.

The B-side of this humorously titled release is hands down one of my favourite tracks of all time, and definitely my favourite Levon Vincent creation. One of the few records that I can honestly say is well worth the high marketplace price, though I hope my copy gives me years of play! There's really no fitting description for this shifting chugger; it's a totally melodic and dubby slice of techno with a nice, subtle tinge of house-y-ness. It keeps going and going, with every element in its perfect place. Lots of reverb and warped sounds that build a series of layered loops from some ultimately quite simple components. For me that's the mark of perfection: a fugue-like cycle that plays on a perfect kick, bass drum, etc. And did I mention there are some VERY fat synth chords? Oh, and I just listened to it again and must add that there are some sweet pitched up lasers. I've always had a soft spot for the sound of lasers! Mmmmmm, Woman Is The Devil indeed.

The third release for La Freund Recordings comes from Amsterdam resident Beraber. Consisting of four strong and very diverse tracks and a jazzy, piano-heavy remix by Chicago House legend Vincent Floyd, Sun Ritual works just as well in the club as it does at home.

All tracks were written and produced during the last two years, combining digital instruments like the Korg M1 and Yamaha DX7 with analog gear like the Roland Juno-6 and Korg MS-10. Kicking things off on the A-side is title track Sun Ritual, a positive and warm tune with lush chords and arpeggiated synths. After a surprising outro, it gets the remix treatment by Deep House pioneer Vincent Floyd, who adds multiple layers to it and delivers a stunning, dreamy eight-minute take on the original.

The flipside opens with Ugly, a soulful club workout with a deep bassline, rolling drums with crisp hi-hats and a hypnotic melody. Next up is Introspect, a serious Electro-tinged cut with heavy Juno chords building up tension as the track evolves. Rounding it up nicely, Forest Rain treats us to an intimate broken-beat affair laced with Rhodes chords and field recordings from Bali.
