It’s a common misconception that, because of The Bearded Man’s burly beard, he must have burly chest hair as well. While it’s true that he could grow a manly forest, he’s completely clean shaven everywhere else. Surprised? In his youth, he was a champion swimmer, and legend has it he even swam all the way from Miami to Ibiza on a single breath. How did he do it? As he effortlessly cruised through the water, his mind had Tapetenwechsel’s ‘Feel You’ on repeat, and the journey was over before it began.

Sunrise is my favorite way to describe the magic of Burning Man.

There are 365 sunrises each year, and most of us consider it a privilege to sleep through them. But during one week at Burning Man the attendance of sunrise is a must. In the desert, as a collective, we make things that are otherwise ordinary occurrences into sacred spectacles. We make costumes for the sunrise, we compose music for it, and we go through death-defying stunts to take incredible pictures of it. And so it goes with many things at Burning Man; things that we take for granted in the real world are treated differently on the playa. It is not just the rising of the sun that we elevate to mythical proportions, but human traits like kindness, patience, uncertainty and flexibility are also celebrated, tested and recharged in Black Rock City.

Through audio and video captures, these extraordinary treatments of ordinary things stand a chance to be implemented in the outside world, not just for those who were there, but also to people who never traveled to Burning Man, and who - through these captures - are reminded that certain basic things in life can hold more value if we so choose. With every unusually nice thing that someone did or said to us at Burning Man, with every unprovoked smile we received from strangers in its dust storms, we will be charged and challenged to pay that spirit forward the other 51 weeks of the year.  And every morning, the sun will faithfully show its face to remind us of this opportunity.  

So, the next time we need to set our alarm clocks because real life responsibilities demand us to be awake before dawn, let’s choose to be grateful for witnessing the sun peek over the horizon or through our concrete jungles, while most other people are sleeping through it, and let’s remember that we are ambassadors of that magical place that celebrates the beauty in ordinary things. 

Today is a good day to be awake!

The Scumfrog - Robot Heart - Burning Man 2014

I come from the roots of house, soul music and r&b. And “ I got my education” originally as a little kid
from The Philly Priest from The East, Neil Murray and to me the  originator of what is today 
called “rap”,  and then those radio years with Frankie Crocker and Jeffrey Troy,  who taught me the 
real meaning of soul.  The art of the mix was a gift from two master’s,  Jim Burgess and Richie Kaczor, 
who let me in to the world of what is today house music and took away all the boundaries.  So many 
have inspired , helped, and encouraged me along the way,  but I am forever grateful  for the true 
believers who gave me a stage when rock was king and two turntables only brought doubt,  long before 
the rave and that term, EDM.  And now for most dj’s I hear.., mixing is king, the art of the journey seems 
to be lost in a nonstop songless digital sync of compressed beats.  This is not that.  It’s just my music 
today, put together the old fashion way by hand, and I hope a tribute to masters who paved the way for 
me to take this journey in the first place. Terminus A Quo.

This was my first trip to the Joshua Tree Music Festival.  It definitely lived up to and exceeded any expectations I may have had.  The beautiful community of music enthusiasts it attracted was second to none.  They came with me wherever I went musically.  There's nothing like being physically present, but I'm trusting some of the magic from that beautiful evening under stars will translate via this recording into something that will leave your soul smiling. After 8 years this is our last year bringing the Disco Knights camp back to Burning Man. I made this mix with the long drive to Burning Man in mind. Every year the drive up is a very interesting part of the journey for me… I think of it as the emotive start to the burn experience. This year in particular as it’s the last year we’re bringing our disco space ship to the playa. So the anticipation of all the memories of the last 8 years that I know are going to be flying through my mind made me want to play a set that I can rock during the drive through Tahoe hills. Not necessarily a mix of my favorite tracks played at the camp or even a representation of it, but more the feelings I’d like to remember looking back at the last 8 years.

A Dirty Love Story #10 - Quarantine Edition - Mixed by Isaiah Martin

Even though I recorded this mix in my small New Zealand quarantine hotel room, ‘the lagoon’ is a very real place. Last time this year, a small group of friends and I threw a secret bonfire moonrise party at this undisclosed location and I played a set there. This year I can sadly not be there, but I recorded a set with the event in mind. The result is over two and a half hours of eclectic psychedelic sounds. Channel your own inner lagoon the way I did over the past two days putting this set together.
