A sizzlin’ hot UKG and breaks mix from Rotterdam’s very own DJ Crisps. 

With releases Riz La Teef’s South London Pressings and Bristol label Time Is Now, DJ Crisps returns with three original dubs that blur the lines between garage, hardcore and breakbeat. ‘Music Is My Life’ lands on Cheeky Music Group on the 20th August filled with big vocal moments, nostalgic samples, soul and uplifting chords with a touch of darkness.

"This mix is the nostalgic sound of my childhood.
I’ve been into video games for most of my life but the PS2 will always hold a special place in my heart as it’s the console I grew up playing. I recently rediscovered the brilliance of the SSX Tricky soundtrack and it sent me down a rabbit hole of other PS2 game soundtracks. A LOT of racing games from that period licensed loads of wicked breakbeat so I thought I’d put together a mix of some of the best tunes I found whilst digging."

There might have been a UKG renaissance in recent years, but some artists doing their thing underground since those early heydays. DJ Perception is one of them. A pioneer of the UKG underground, he's been pushing the sound for years through his slick DJ sets, signature rolling grooves and his Moodswing imprint.

The label originally began in the late 80s and after a hiatus was passed down to Perception to helm a few years back, now it's become a space for UKG offerings from himself, Sky Joose and The Stab Mechanics, with plenty more on the way.

When he's not running his own label, he's making music for others: the likes of Rhythm N Vibe, Vex White, Dansu Discs and Bluff Records. But it's his partnership with Timehri that has been a really fruitful one. The London-based platform-turned-label, run by DJ T Dunn, has had a hand in elevating Perception to his rightful status and introduced a new audience of UKG lovers to his old school sound.

He helped launch the label arm in March last year, then contributed a joint mixtape alongside Highrise that consisted of almost entirely unreleased music - now, he's returned for a long player which also marks the only album on the label so far. Arguably the first of its kind in the Garage world, Perception charts a voyage through space for his new concept Journey To The Star.

To celebrate the release, which dropped today, he gives us a taste of his stacked UKG collection as he travels through different eras, sounds and styles...

DJ Perception: The 'Ransom Note' Mix

DJ Perception is lauded as one of the leading voices in the contemporary UK garage landscape. His sets are widely known for being jam-packed with exclusive dubplates and sought-after cuts of slick 2-step, and his productions are just as highly revered, blending elements of UK garage with house and soul. “I like to make all types of garage, but never commercial music," he tells moderator Heléna Star in his interview. "It’s just underground.”

In this live listening party hosted by Timehri Records and the Black Artist Database, the artist talks with Timehri head T Dunn about the production of his most recent LP, Journey To The Star, which landed on the label in October 2022. They also listen to segments of the record and discuss its wider concept and construction with a live audience. "The music I make has to be soulful," DJ Perception says. "It can be dark, but it has to be groovy and it has to be soulful. That's how I work."
