These four walls were her sanctuary, an armour she'd built to protect her from the chaos of the outside world. By choice her days and nights were spent in isolation, it was exactly the way she liked it. She'd never cared much for other people, she preferred to live in her own imaginary world, where everything made perfect sense to her and her alone. In this bubble she felt safe and protected - there was nobody to answer to, nobody to give their unsolicited advise, she was the master of this universe.

Since their inception over a decade ago Hamburg imprint Couldn't Care More have been home to a roster of artists exploring deep, abstract electronics including the likes of A Sagittariun, Harmonious Thelonious and Stareaway. For their first outing of 2023 they welcome a new member to the family, NY producer J. Albert. The Exotic Dance Records boss and self-described "technologist" brings his distinctive take on deep, groove-laden house and techno for his config EP which is laced with airy, atmospheric pads, intricate sound design and tight drum programming.

This week’s entry to the Local Selection Mix is a long-overdue contribution from Irish stalwart, Kenny Hanlon. This 90-minute live recording from Galway’s fabled Deep Sea Dweller party sees the Apartment Records boss drenching dancers in a swirl of jerking bass-heavy half-steppers and menacing up-front acid cuts.

The 230th iteration of the Local Selection Mix comes from Apartment Records boss, Kenny Hanlon. A longtime fixture in Ireland’s dance music scene, the Dublin City native has made a name for himself as a renowned label boss, DJ, and promoter. When it comes to DJs and curators, Hanlon is in a league of his own as his sound has remained consistent and unadulterated, making him one of the few original purists left in the Irish capital.

Hanlon is best known for his work under Apartment Records, one of Dublin’s most illustrious imprints, operating since 2011. For over ten years, the label has offered intricate releases from artists such as TR One, Chase Smith, New Jackson, Belacqua, and countless more, positioning itself as a leader in forward-facing Irish dance music. Hanlon is also involved in one of Ireland’s most unique festivals, Open Ear. Kenny has tirelessly and passionately advocated for nonconformist Irish club sounds, always leaning towards the weird and wonderful corners of the electronic spectrum.

Hanlon blends the deep and cavernous tones of Detroit’s aquatic electro-sound with the screwface techno rhythms of Germany and Belgium in his live recording from Galway’s Deep Sea Dweller party. The Apartment Records boss pieces together contrasting yet functional club weapons while also weaving in and out of ambient interludes, spacey soundscapes, and nailbiting dramatic intersections. Hanlon presents a timeless mix, presented with an undeniable air of coolness.

Some highlights this month include opening up with one by Elll called Flourishing Arts off a recent quarantine themed All City release - before moving on to the bitter-sweet pads of Pessimist operating under his Soft Boi alias on the Climate of Fear label. Dying for that release to come out!  Some just how we like it rolling dancehall from Kouslin on Livity Sound.  That one’s called The Beast of Bolsover - no doubt a nod to the fiercely witty Denis Skinner, a former UK Labour MP and staunch republican known for heckling during the Queen's speech.  There’s a track called Horse Mouth by East Man & Walton, making fresh use of that famous speech from the 1980 classic Babylon, and a rake of bangers from the superb Frass FM comps off Astral Black.
