This episode is a special tribute to Aussie & Nz pub rock/new wave/synth/punk music in the 70’s & 80’s. It’s understatement to say that pubs play a vital role in antipodean culture, not just in a social sense but also as a service to the music & arts community. So many bands & artists that eventually went on to superstardom started out by grinding their teeth at their local pubs. 

The outcome from this current lockdown situation is it’s looking like a lot of pubs & small venues probably won’t make it out the other side, and if that happens it will be a huge loss for the music scene as a whole. 

This mix is mostly just a bit of fun to show off a bunch of lesser-heard aussie & nz music, but also it’s a slight nudge to anyone listening to be conscious and have a pot & parma at their local when this is all over. damn I miss the pub :'(

Samuel Ombasa works behind the counter at Jimmy's Records, Nairobi's premier vinyl dealer. DJing as Sam Tha Digger, he specialises in hip-hop but reaches for anything with soul coursing through it, and present them with a formidable turntablism. A talent who deserves to be known far beyond Nairobi. 

Titled "moneyorthelackthereof", his 1hr40 mix focuses on hip-hop with money as its theme; a rumination on the effects of the pandemic and a wish "to give hope to all of us as we wait for better days." In a new format for Diggers Directory, Sam has videod his set as the 18th edition of his Vinyl Session series, made in partnership with Tha Swissarmyhauz Sound System.
