Alice In Wonderland [Act I]

“No Worries. Here’s a Hug”, that I composed today December 4th during the ballet class, is a gentle reminder that some things in life are simply beyond our control. Worries won’t change a thing—just like shouting at the clouds won’t make the sun shine or the rain pour. Whatever you’re feeling, let it pass. Don’t dwell too deeply in the emotion or let it consume you. The clouds always move on, and soon enough, the sun will break through.

This piece, a heartfelt embrace in musical form, encourages you to let go, breathe, and trust in the natural rhythm of life.

To my listeners, this composition will soon be available on streaming platforms as part of an upcoming album. The album will carry a special name—a word filled with meaning, inspired by my mom’s wisdom and by you, Meem.

Enjoy the music, and may it bring you peace and comfort!

Aubade in the 5th section of my Philip Larking song sequence In the White Hours. Although there is a poem by Larkin with that title, this section of the work is a purely instrumental interlude 'Dawn Song' that leads into the final setting, Morning at Last.

{Dream of the Wild Rose}

In a hidden valley, where mist swirls in circling clouds 
a wild rose bloomed by still waters..
rooted deep in the earth, She dreamt of 
the little piece of sky which she could call her own.

"O wandering wind," she whispered, 
"carry me beyond the jade mountains, 
where rivers weave like dragon’s breath and the moon rests upon rippling waters."

A firefly, drifting by, paused to greet her.. 
"I will be your wings, your eyes, your legs
Night after night, he returned, 
speaking of gardens enshrined in clouds.. 
of cranes rising over pine-clad peaks, 
of lotus petals drifting above mirrored lakes.
Though the rose had never left the earth s
he had vividly wandered through mountains and rivers.. 
through the silence of time..
until one autumn morning, the firefly did not return..
Yet Rose did not grieve. 
She had traveled far, in her shared adventures and dreams. 
Beneath the sky’s endless reach  
She stood, a crimson brushstroke against the vast sunset.

Dream of the Wild Rose 野玫瑰之夢 (Piano Trio)

Note from Nov. 9, 2017: Flight was long in the making.  The basis of sections of this piece were originally composed on the piano almost 20 years ago and the opening chord is from 30 years ago!   I usually do not connect a specific part of my life to any of my music, but late one night while working on this piece and wondering what it was all about, I had an experience that revealed the music is perhaps unwittingly very autobiographical.  Flight is the first piece that I attempted to orchestrate with a full orchestra.  It lacks some of the technical refinement (listening to it again for the first time in a long time, I can hear the poorer quliaty more than ever) of later pieces (no MIR PRO for those who know).  Needless-to-say, it was a true labor of love, and is one of my proudest accomplishments in music.  From this work have spawned a few other pieces including my most popular; Farewell - An Adagio for Strings.   Amusingly, it has been my least liked and commented track as of writing, with only one comment.   Regardless, if you listen - and there is a lot to listen to - I hope there's something there that is worth your patience.  Thanks you as always.

Hollie Buhagiar is an award-winning Gibraltarian composer based in London, who specialises in crafting bespoke scores for film, TV and Games. She has worked on a plethora of projects for both short and feature length films alongside Grammy and Academy Award winning engineers in the finest studios across London.

Graduating from Leeds College of Music with a first-class honours in Music production, Hollie continued on to complete a Masters at the National Film and Television School.

 

Throughout her career she has been hailed for her unique and varied sonic palette as well as her ability to create fascinating scores that approach traditional composition from a new and exciting perspective.

 

Hollie's experience spans worldwide and includes work for the likes of Amazon, Channel 4, BFI, NOWNESS, Creative England, Tate, The Guardian, Film London and BBC. Her projects have received critical acclaim winning various prestigious awards, these include a Porsche Award, a Gold British Arrow and the McLaren Award for Best British Animation, as well as being a two time Unity Awards nominee. One of her works 'Poles Apart' won the 2018 British Short Animation BAFTA, she also won the 2018 Best Composer award after holding three nominations at the Underwire Film Festival and was nominated for the 2018 Best Sound Design Offie Award with her theatre debut in 'Collective Rage: A Play in Five Betties'. Hollie's acclaimed string quintet piece 'Astilbe' recently had it's world premiere performance in Rode Island and is set to be toured across USA, she was also very recently honoured with Gibraltar's first ever Extraordinary Achievement Award for her work in the arts.

Aside from this, Hollie is an extremely accomplished session vocalist having worked on everything from prime time television shows to worldwide advertising campaigns, the most recent of which being season eleven of Doctor Who and the 2018 commercials for The Voice.
