The summer of 2011 welcomed the self-titled debut album from Hollie Cook. Hollie’s self-coined ‘Tropical pop’ sound stems from her passion for reggae singers Janet Kay and Phyllis Dillon combined with classic 60s girl groups. The album is produced by friend and collaborator Mike Pelanconi, better known as Prince Fatty. The debut single ‘That Very Night’ is currently making waves across radio, with Steve Lamacq (BBC Radio 2/6 Music), John Kennedy (XFM) and David Rodigan (Kiss) among her many supporters.  The album includes a cover of Shangri-Las’ ‘(Remember) Walkin’ In The Sand)’; transformed from a dark emotive song to one filled with a flavour of hope. The talents of Omar, Dennis Bovell, George Decker (The Pioneers), Style Scott and Horseman also feature across the album.

The much-anticipated second album instalment from Hollie Cook.  Prince Fatty dubs her self-titled album tracks adding extra bass, delays and reverbs to Hollie’s captivating vocals. Featuring tracks such as ‘For Me You Are Dub’; a ska version of an old Andrews Sisters’ classic, ‘And The Beat Goes On’; a brand new dub cover of the The Whispers’ disco classic, ‘Walking in the Sand’; a delicious adaptation of the Shangri La’s legendary record, and ‘Baby’; a new revamp of this heavily requested anthem, in collaboration with French synth-pop outfit, ‘The Shoes’.
 
“The dub versions showcase real tape echoes, heavy spring reverbs and alternate instrumental elements such as melodica, percussion or horns that were hidden in the vocal versions. All the dubs are mixed live in my studio in the same Rub a Dub style as was made famous in 70s Jamaica by King Tubby and others, i.e not with the use of computers for automation and endless digital nonsense but with fingers, late night vibes and re-arranged with a razor blade!” Prince Fatty

Hollie was born and bred in West London in a household dominated by music - with Sex Pistol Paul Cook as her dad, music was always around, and she gravitated to the sounds of Marc Bolan, David Bowie and The Cure.  Entering professional acting, singing and modelling at a young age, Hollie soon rejected her performance arts schooling for a musical path truer to her influences. Family friend and Slits singer Ari Up persuaded Hollie to sing backing vocals for a new EP ‘Revenge of the Killer Slits’, which she followed by ditching school to join the band on a six week US tour. Hollie was now an official Slit - Ari referred to Hollie as the 'second singer' - so when it came to record a new Slits album in LA, Hollie's vocals, keyboards and even her song ‘Cry’ all featured.

The band from Valencia KI-SAP has been regularly on the stages of Spain, Germany, France, Holland and Portugal for almost 15 years. Five albums released (4 recorded in the studio and one on stage). 16.000 copies sold, a real record if we consider the present times and bear in mind that are self-published discs and managed alternatively by non-commercial distributors and social squat centres. Around 100,000 free downloads from the band’s web site. Through this period their musical evolution has covered the path that goes from Ska-Punk to the Reggae-Roots/Ska-Rocksteady, their present approach. On stage or at the studio the band’s mode has always been intensified by themes of instrumental ska in the classic fashion. An this is what produced the birth of a parallel project, THE SHAKE IT UP’S that enables them to penetrate in that “vintage” side.

In 2007 they decided to deliver a 100% instrumental album in which they go more deeply into what has happened to the style since its birth in the Caribbean at the beginning of the decade of the 50’s: Ska-Swing, Ska-2Tone, Ska-Jazz, Rocksteady, Dub… These are the elements that shape the 12 cuts included in this work where influences of the likes of the Skatalites, Rico Rodriguez, Don Drummond, Augustus Pablo, New York Ska-Jazz Ensemble, can be found. Also counting with guest collaborations from “Skaparapid”,“Benifajazz Big Band” or jazz trombonist Toni Belenguer.

As said, this CD is their personal view of what has happened to Ska since its birth until the present moment when Ska is a beat but also a way of understanding music that is practiced all around the world. Produced by J.L.Shipley (except Reggae-Dub cuts which are also co-produced by Dr. Jau). Music to think with the feet and dance with the head.
