This piece creates a really interesting musical dissonance. It's a bluesy country song, but it's jazzy and swingy too, with some hip hop elements, because mixing country and hip hop is never boring.

So this one took sort of an old timey turn on me as I was rendering it, and I decided to run with it. This shit is fun. It's also sort of a mashup of like five other songs I've written, so if you've listened to my discography, there might be verses in here you've heard before, but mostly from songs I was unhappy with in their original forms. Remember kids, it's not plagiarism if you do it to yourself!

A Silly Love Song (DRAFT 1f)

Instrumental - Hold My Coat

So I was researching old sheet music and lyrics for ideas, and I came across this old historic bluegrass song called "And I'm going to the river" and it was such a perfect breakup song. I love writing those. Anyway, I decided to give it a lynn cole workover as a modern country song, and post it here. Also of note: Mine isn't the only rethinking of the song. There are several out there. And that's interesting. But far as I know, mine is the most recent.

In this one I wanted to experiment a very broken model, and see if I could make it work in a song. Also someone was looking for re-imagined covers, and this was the draft that made me cry. So this is what I sent

It's a 104 year old ear worm. Very catchy. And I wanted to use the original chord progression this time, but I wanted to make something a little jazzier and modern sounding.

Wasn't happy with the last draft.
So I reworked it a little, finally wrote a chorus I'm happy with. Also felt like it needed a jazzier grungier hip hoppier arrangement. So that's what you're getting here. It's still long, even after I cut it down, so it's probably not a single. But I feel like it's still a pretty strong song with mostly good flow.

Pretty Little Tragedy (Draft 2)

Somehow, this one went from being an edgy joke song, to being a real country song. And a pretty good one. In this draft, I tried hard to avoid things that I see as lynn cole songwriting cliches. So I got creative with some of the rhyming, and that's interesting. I want to do more of this. This one's also less sweary than the last draft because, well, it didn't need it. I was more focused, I think, on tying the theme of the song together from beginning to end, which was something it never had before.

How I got here was fun. I've been experimenting with stable audio to generate tracks based on beatboxing, and my happy little keyboard, and mixing midi tracks in and whatnot. Well, I did all of that here, plus, pitch shifted my voice to make different instruments.

Which makes sense because the lyrics are nonsense.
But as a psychedelic rock song? Well, I guess the genre will never make this song make more sense, but I think it works better

This one's interesting. To get this piece right, I used both suno and udio to make it. Udio has trouble reading twisty lyrics, and suno is better with melodies. So what I did here was render half the first verse, and ran it through udio until it learned the vocal pattern. It carried the melody, and was able to carry the second verse.

That said, I just finished this, have not shown it to anyone yet.
And there's a 50% chance, as usual, that it's awful.

Then There's You (DRAFT2)

So, when I started on this rewriting/translating project, I had heard versions of Joe Turner #6, but only later ones. 

After it was translated from bluegrass to blues, or whatever happened there. It's really tough to know from what remains of the available historical record on the internet.

But... what I didn't know at the time was that the song had been rewritten from the ground up like 27 times, and that variations of it have appeared in every musical genre there's been since 1906, when it was first written by W.C. Handy. And the most recent rewrite, before mine, happened about ten years ago.

Super interesting.
So I don't feel bad about rewriting it.

The problem with the original, is that it's a mostly unstructured banjo song written in 1906, and I had to figure out where the different sections of the song were, in order to translate them for a contemporary audience.

I wanted to translate the song, because I was in the middle of a really nasty breakup with my ex, someone I had been with for a decade and a half and... y'know, some feelings in music are universal, and transcend time.

So I saw a lot of myself in the piece, and a lot of the arguments I had with my ex. It really resonated with me, on this spiritual level, and I wanted to do the same thing here that I had done with my translating sonnets project a few years back.

And that's interesting because of the rules

1. You want to translate as closely as possible, changing the language, without changing the point of the piece.

2. Only omitting details that can't be translated (like riding trains), and supplementing new details (truck fixed up) that will aide future translators a century, or however long from now. (I'm not expecting that to happen, but if it did...)

Here, I made the command decision, initially, to try to do it as a modern pop country song. I mean, it's got all the elements, love, hate, neglect, petty nonsense, drama! There's a reason pieces like this stand the test of time in some form.

Around draft 5, I realized pop country was too boring for this, and it needed some soul and r&b elements to get to the point where my vision was for the piece.

And that led me to draft 6. I was happy with Draft 6, but then I started experimenting with moving some of my older work from Suno into Udio, and I figured out how to migrate the song, without really hurting the instrumental elements that I really liked.

So this is draft 7. And it's a ride.

There's a history with this one that makes it meaningful for me.

Original version of the song had some scary stuff in it.
I edited most of that out, and we're left with an introspective pop song that isn't terrible.

Burnt Out

I’m stoned, and I’ve been having a rough week emotionally, so I’m feeling contemplative. This song has survived almost fully intact and with only minor changes since Suno v2 when I first wrote it last year. 

Now, this song stands out in my discography because it’s out of character for me. I’m the girl from Barriers, or Tell Me Anything. You know, the one who wishes she could put up emotional walls, but honestly finds them entirely too annoying to be worth doing. I’m a believer in sincere honesty. This song is not that. At least, not for me. I think it’s an honest representation of a thought process I find ridiculous, and annoying.

This is another piece about K. To recap, K was someone I was involved with for about six years. Songs like “Not in love anymore,” “500 Miles,” this one, and probably a dozen others are about them. It’s a relationship that technically never ended 20 years ago, that I still have pretty strong emotions about. And it’s a place I go to sometimes, when I feel frustrated, or heartbroken, or lonely to do self examination on my patterns and flaws in these areas. Also a lot of good hyperbolic drama! It’s somewhere safe because it’s long over, and there’s no changing it. 

Part of the fun of songwriting is being able to unpack and learn to cope with some of this stuff. 

This relationship was a pile of bad ideas, stacked on hundreds of wobbly milk crates, filled to the brim with bad ideas. From the first day, we both knew it was a terrible idea, and we did it anyway, because we were both unusually stupid 25 year olds.

Words Fall Short is a conversation K would have with me, almost word per word. And it’s one that happened regularly. The whole conceit of it is so unfair, and unreasonable. It bothers me, even now, because of how unapologetically cynical it is. And that was my thinking when I wrote it. 

I also find joy in the fact that K would absolutely lose their shit, if they knew I was using ai’s to sing it, and probably go on a weird tirade about how the robots are just lulling you into a false sense of security, and y’know, they can eat bugs now, and they’re going to murder all of us! Just wait! If K is still out there, I guarantee you, that they would hate every piece of art I’ve made in the last five years. At least, the version of them that I remember.

Anyway, it’s a deeply unjust, unfair song… that I find oddly beautiful? And the performance makes it so much prettier than it has any right to be.

This one’s very close to the first draft. That’s intentional. One detail I’m proud of here is that I figured out how to make Udio generate both an organ synth, as well as an acoustic piano, and bleed them together for that borderline uncanny sounding ai or lofi piano. See that yall? We’re already intentionally recreating old ai aesthetics! Isn’t that awesome?
