A rare freeform set from Carlos Souffront, archived from the Outer Space Room at No Way Back: Streaming From Beyond 2021. Going far beyond the boundaries of the dance floor and deep into his record collection, we get to experience a side of Carlos seldom seen. Carlos is a rare DJ where everything he does is just so thoughtful and layered, so it is really amazing to go on this adventure with him where we can hear so many deep and heady takes on outsider music presented with such intention, it is simultaneously gourmet, bizarre and perfect. This is Carlos playing directly after Scott Zacharias in the stream as the second set in the Outer Space room, directly before we transitioned to the live block that included Raica, Suzanne Ciani, Organic Dial, Fronte Violetta and Adam Arthur.

There is nothing ordinary about Sepehr (@sepehr-a): he hails from the Bay Area of San Fran, is based in New York City but has Iranian heritage and takes great pleasure in pulling apart everything you think you know about dance music. His maverick approach results in versatile and genre-defiant sounds that collide EBM, drum & bass, techno, electro, acid and plenty more on some of the finest labels out there. He runs his own Shaytoon Records which is focussed on the Middle Eastern underground, and in May lands on our own Dekmanel Records with Genesis Domain, a varied EP full of intriguing sounds.

The same could be said of his mix for us this week. It's a deep dive into his eclectic and eccentric musical mind that spans several sounds and scenes. Although united by body-moving rhythms, there is everything from club to techno to broken beat and plenty more besides. Each track is packed with detail and surrealist sounds that will keep your head as busy as your heels.

Here is a recording from the up and coming AZA recorded at Midwest Freaks last December in Madison, where IT, Intellephunk and Remain in Night united for a secret warehouse party. How can you explain being lost in the Midwest and spending all night with non stop rave alchemy in a secret warehouse? This type of thing really fills you with hope for the future. 

AZA is techno as a living being. She was born in SF to parents who had immigrated from Trinidad and Tobago of the West Indies. She grew up within music, from the music of the Caribbean (ranging from Dub and Reggae to Calypso) to the sounds of Jazz and Funk, which led her to singing in operas resulting in a college scholarship for voice. Her greatest revelation came when her mother took her to Movement and she experienced techno. She says, “I feel blissful when I create and play techno. It takes me into inner space travel. It is a place where I feel safe. The possibilities feel so endless in my techno explorations.” Experience that techno bliss with this moment of AZA at Midwest Freaks.

IT.podcast.s13e03: Derek Plaslaiko at No Way Back 2024

The first time we'd ever heard of Carlos Souffront was in 2006, when Derek Plaslaiko was encouraging us to book him for our first 3/03 acid party (alongside Mark Verbos).  Derek would not shut up about a party in Detroit where Carlos just played Aphex Twin (and his many aliases) vinyl all night long and demolished the place.  So it only followed that we should invite him to play an all acid set on 3/03.  Carlos of course was phenomenal that night and has been a regular guest at The Bunker ever since.  Earlier this year, when Aphex Twin began uploading a seemingly endless stream of unreleased tracks to Soundcloud, it was Derek once again who called us and said: you HAVE to ask Carlos do a mix of this stuff for The Bunker Podcast.  Carlos obliged and did this mix for us live in one take (after a surprise practice session on RBMA radio).  Enjoy!

In the absence of a human audience, I asked myself: How do I bridge the ecstatic witchy energy of Eris Drew and the hazy cerebral science of Patrick Russell, in a way that works for home listening (and cats)? No Way Back: Streaming From Beyond

A 36+ hour take on No Way Back, with 24 hours of the No Way Back room residents and 12+ hours of the Outer Space room immediately following. An excess of the mindmelting wormhole dance experience followed by many hours of floating in space and beyond. When we considered podcasting some sets, we decided to just release them all, one week at a time, in an order different than their original broadcast, with the concept of bringing further ideas with the continuum to light.

For us the toughest moment of the pandemic shut down was the thought that we could not gather on Memorial Day weekend for our annual rite of No Way Back. We need our community now more than ever, to connect and to feel free, in a world of shifting real and unreal realities, sequestered in isolation, how can we get together? Time feels different now, we have more patience for everything, so we applied that space for exploration to the sets at No Way Back, extending them to 3 hours so the DJs can fully explore their ideas.

The Electrifyin' Mojo would say "if you reach the end of your rope, just tie a knot and don’t let go" and this stream and podcasts are our knot. This was the first ever NWB without a defined space, without the transformational art of Amber Gillen and crew, let's hope we can get together in the future safely. Grab a little bit of netting or a parachute, turn on some red lights, move into another dimension. Please stay safe and live to dance another day.
