(EXPLORATIONLP001) Exporation Crew - Setting Forth LP // 2x12" vinyl + digital - October 2015

John Digweed’s long running and influential Bedrock label is delighted to welcome a new talent to the ranks: that man is Greek house and techno talent Argy, and now he debuts on the label with a brand new EP that has already been doing plenty of damage in Ibiza this summer. 

Argy has long been turning out cultured house and techno with a classical bent on labels like Cadenza, Poker Flat, BPitch Control and Ibadan Records. A thinking man’s DJ and producer, he has played all over the world, has been a regular at Sankeys Ibiza this summer and is as skilled at crafting albums as he is club-owning 12”s. 

Up first, ‘Belen’ is an epic seven minute workout that grows in stature as it unfolds. Spine tingling melodies swell above sweeping pads, rubber kicks and icy hi hats. It is a smooth and serene track that cannot fail to entrance whole dance floors as it rumbles on, right on the cusp between house and techno. 

Then comes ‘Afredo’, a more percussive work out but still one resplendent with rich chords and airy pads. Big, loose fingered piano chords dominate this one as they jangling above the mildly euphoric drum line and gallivanting kicks. 

Epic and fulsome, and impossible to ignore, this is a pair of tracks that fit perfectly with the Bedrock cannon at the same time as bringing something fresh to the label.

Kindred Phenomena marks @Mattheis’ debut album. After two cosmic EPs on Nous’klaer and a mini-album on tape for Ecstatic Recordings, he now returns to Nous’klaer for his first full story. An album shaped for every occasion: driving from the city to the island, dancing in the living room, or raving at sunset.

On Kindred Phenomena Mattheis picks up where he left off: ‘Swell’ serves as another episode of the prisms, the modular synth excursion of ‘Bit Fragments’ pushes his arpeggiator solos a step further, and album standout ‘Ben_m’ provides his most beautiful dance of melodies yet. The album consists of eight tracks and comes as a double 12 inch for deejay convenience; and for the ultimate experience: go see Mattheis perform his album live on the road.

Animals harnesses the wanderlust of Natalizia's spate of self-released albums and records for Ecstatic and Emotional Response but dials up the wildness, spitting out a careering sequence of tracks that feel as warped, deep-raved and giddy as a night out in the city they were forged. These are tunes — no, songs — for post-work smash-ups, weekenders and sore commutes. And make no mistake, although Animals occasionally bites hard at the business end of the ‘floor, this is Diagonal’s most POP record yet, with Natalizia’s songwriting sensibility conjuring moments of tenderness and beauty to offset the manic strobe lighting and drippin’ sweat. 

DIAG025 Not Waving '24'

Having turned out two hazy, driving EPs of muffled techno for Lobster Theremin sub-label Mörk, nthng arrives on Pacific Command for a rare two track exploration of gritty Dutch rave and rolling trance-y techno. 

Are You Here takes an up-tempo booted-bucket drum shuffle and steadily filters it's way into a skittering hat furore, all coated with epic pads and a demi-hoover rave stab. Full fire-alarm business. 

On the flip nthng takes serious influence from early trance and techno with the warehouse-crushing In The Afterglow. Constructed on the back of an early 90's hard house-esque alien synth patterns and rolling wildly into the deepest depths of the forest rave, until the long-awaited sunlight pads come bursting through the leaves.

Glasgow’s Deepbass returns to Soma with the follow up to 2015’s massively successful debut on the label with the equally trippy Second Stage EP. Deepbass has had a storming end to the year which has seen releases on many fine Techno imprints throughout Europe and a slew of gigs backing too. This new 3 track EP sees the young producer step up his game with deftly made, other-worldly Techno

Circa opens the EP. A surge of pulsating low end becomes the solid groundings as subtly distant percussion comes in waves while the heart of the track, a pure and melodic pad sweep, brings out true depth in the production. Aeon brings a bit more drive to the EP. More straightedge percussion rattles through with Deepbass’ subtle synth work sitting perfectly in the background, giving way to the gentlest of drones and sweeps. Rails brings an almost sinister quality to the EP but yet Deepbass manages to keep this reigned in slightly as his usual ethereal vibe permeates this dark and hypnotic affair.

A true purveyor of quality, emotive Deep Techno, the young producer looks to blossom more on Soma with each release.

Check out this great mixtape Sebastien Bouchet did for Get The Curse, as it holds all the weirdo perfectionism the guy's known for. Quite an interesting selection he's got here, pitching true versatility and implementing other people's track in his sound universe as if they were his own. As a DJ and producer, Sebastian definitely sports a voice of his own, strong-willed, but subtle, personal, but approachable.
