Tanzania is a country in East Africa. It lies on the Indian Ocean and borders Kenya and Uganda to the north, Rwanda, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of Congo to the west, and Zambia, Malawi, and Mozambique to the south. Tanzania is approximately two and a half times the size of Germany. With a population of around 62 million, it is the fifth-largest country in Africa. Tanganyika (the mainland territory including the island of Mafia) gained independence from the United Kingdom on December 9, 1961, and merged with Zanzibar (the islands of Pemba and Unguja) in 1964 to form Tanzania, whose name is a portmanteau of Tanganyika, Zanzibar, and the term Azania. Tanzania has been a member of the Commonwealth of Nations since gaining independence from the United Kingdom in 1961.

Somalia refers to a federal state on the Horn of Africa in the far east of Africa. The claimed territory borders the Indian Ocean to the east, the Gulf of Aden to the north, Djibouti and Ethiopia to the west, and Kenya to the south. More than 17 million people live there. However, a Somalia within these borders has not existed since 1988 due to the Somali Civil War. By 1991, the northwest seceded and has existed largely stably as the independent de facto state of Somaliland since then, in contrast to the rest of the country, where fighting continues to this day and which is considered a failed state.

The country's name is derived from the Somali people, who form the majority of the population. Somalia emerged from the merger of the colonial territories of British and Italian Somaliland, which jointly gained independence in 1960 ("African Year"). With the overthrow of the authoritarian government under Siad Barre in 1991, Somalia completely collapsed. The transitional governments formed from 2000 onwards under the protection of the international community were largely unsuccessful; at times they were barely able to maintain control of the capital. Large parts of the country fell into the hands of local clans, warlords, or radical Islamist groups, and there was also widespread piracy off the coast of Somalia. In 2012, the majority of the many de facto states that had emerged in the meantime formed a new republic with a joint government under a new constitution in 2012, in which they remain largely autonomous as member states. This federal state exists to this day. However, this government still has no power over Somaliland in the northwest, which is seeking international recognition as an independent state from Somalia. Furthermore, large parts of Somalia, especially in the south, are controlled by the Islamist al-Shabaab (as of February 2024).

Somalia is one of the poorest countries in the world[5][6] and the country with the worst hunger.[7] In February 2023, according to the UN Children's Fund UNICEF, over 6 million people in Somalia were affected by hunger.

The country's economic performance declined sharply as a result of the Yugoslav Wars; it recovered somewhat between 2003 and 2008.[9] After achieving important short-term successes in the EU accession process (including the entry into force of an interim agreement for trade facilitation with the EU and the abolition of visa requirements for Serbian citizens), Serbia submitted its candidacy for membership of the European Union on December 22, 2009, and was granted candidate country status on March 1, 2012.
