Portugal is a European state in the west of the Iberian Peninsula. Portugal is the westernmost point of continental Europe. The country is therefore bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the west, Spain to the east and north and the Atlantic Ocean to the south. The Portuguese territory includes the islands of the Azores and Madeira (including Porto Santo).

Founded in the 12th century, the Kingdom of Portugal initiated the Age of Discovery in the 15th century and became the first global empire. The kingdom created the first and one of the largest colonial empires with possessions in Africa, Asia and South America, whose decline began in the course of the 17th century. In 1910, a military uprising overthrew the Portuguese monarchy, forcing King Manuel II into exile. The Carnation Revolution of April 25, 1974 led to the overthrow of the regime and opened the way to the democratic Third Republic. It also marked the end of the longest-standing colonial empire, which was dissolved in 1975.

Portugal is a founding member of NATO (1949) and the OECD (1948) and a member of the United Nations (since 1955), the Council of Europe (since 1976) and the Schengen Agreement (since 1995). On January 1, 1986, Portugal joined the European Communities (EC) together with Spain, which later became the European Union (EU), and is also one of the founding states of the Eurozone.

Portugal has long been a country of emigration; Important centers of Portuguese culture in the diaspora today exist in France and the USA (where around 1 to 2 million Portuguese live each), as well as in Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, Switzerland and Luxembourg. Portugal is a very safe country; in 2023 it was ranked seventh on the Global Peace Index. The United Nations Development Program lists Portugal as one of the countries with very high levels of human development. Despite its comparatively conservative, Catholic society, the traditionally cosmopolitan country has now developed into a very liberal country, which can be seen, for example, in Portugal's liberal drug policy, which was introduced in 2001 and received international attention, or the comparatively progressive situation with homosexuality in Portugal. is a country in Eastern Europe with more than 37 million inhabitants. With an area of ​​603,628 square kilometers it is the second largest country in Europe after Russia and the largest country whose territory lies entirely within the continent. The country borders Russia to the east and northeast, Belarus to the north, Poland, Slovakia and Hungary to the west, and Romania and Moldova to the southwest. To the south, Ukraine borders the Black Sea and the Sea of ​​Azov. The capital and largest metropolis of the country is Kyiv; other urban centers are Kharkiv, Dnipro, Donetsk and Odessa.

Ukraine, like its neighboring countries Russia and Belarus, traces its state tradition back to the medieval Kyiv Empire. Since its fall during the Mongol invasion of the 13th century, the territory of Ukraine has alternately belonged, in whole or in part, to the dominions of the Golden Horde, Poland-Lithuania, the Russian Empire, and the Habsburg Monarchy. In 1954, Nikita Khrushchev subordinated Crimea, which had previously belonged to the Russian Federation (RSFSR), to Ukraine. Only after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 did Ukraine regain sovereignty, receiving international recognition for the first time. In return for Ukraine renouncing the Soviet nuclear weapons stationed on its territory, Russia, the United States, and Great Britain guaranteed the country's independence and existing borders in the Budapest Memorandum of 1994.

In February 2014, following Russia's annexation of Crimea and the war in Donbas, a conflict erupted between the two countries that continues to this day. Crimea and parts of Donbas have been under Russian control ever since. On February 21, 2022, Russia recognized the "People's Republics" of Donetsk and Luhansk, proclaimed by pro-Russian separatists, as independent states from Ukraine (only to formally annex them a few months later). On February 24, 2022, the invasion of Ukraine began, with Russian troops invading Ukraine from Russia, Belarus, the Black Sea, and previously occupied territories. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy declared a state of war and martial law.

After the attack on the capital Kyiv, which was repelled by Ukraine, the war shifted primarily to the east and southeast of the country, with the exception of airstrikes. As of June 1, 2022, according to UNHCR estimates, 4.7 million people from Ukraine were registered as refugees in Europe. A total of over 7.9 million people have fled Ukraine, and another 5.9 million have become internally displaced within Ukraine. According to the United Nations, this is the largest refugee movement worldwide since World War II.

Yemen is a country in the Middle East, in the south of the Arabian Peninsula. Yemen borders Saudi Arabia to the north, Oman to the east, the Gulf of Aden and the Arabian Sea to the south, and the Red Sea to the west. The states of Djibouti and Eritrea are located across the Red Sea, about 20 and 30 kilometers apart, respectively. A civil war has raged since 2013. In this conflict, the Houthi militias succeeded in capturing the capital, Sanaa, and large parts of the country. On March 25, 2015, Saudi Arabia, with the military cooperation of eight other states (the Islamic Military Coalition), launched a military intervention called Operation Decisive Storm to support the central government under President Hadi and Prime Minister Khalid Bahah. This massively escalated the conflict and is considered a proxy war between Saudi Arabia and the Islamic Republic of Iran. As of April 1, 2022, 4.3 million people are internally displaced due to the war in the country. Seventy percent of the population depends on international aid for survival.
